Ringgit ends higher on regional trade optimism
Innes said the agreement to impose a reduced 20% tariff on Vietnamese exports, down from a previously threatened 46%, has lifted risk appetite and supported regional currencies.
'The markets see this as a positive sign for global trade recovery, which helped boost the ringgit,' he told Bernama.
Innes also said the weaker-than-expected US ADP jobs data, with only 33,000 jobs added in June, reinforced expectations of two US rate cuts this year, pressuring the greenback.
He noted, however, that market focus might shift to tonight's non-farm payrolls report, with consensus at 106,000.
At 6pm, the local note rose to 4.2195/4.2255 versus the greenback from yesterday's close of 4.2245/4.2305.
The local currency traded mostly lower against a basket of major currencies.
It shrank against the euro to 4.9756/4.9827 from 4.9748/4.9818, and depreciated against the Japanese yen to 2.9333/2.9376 from 2.9316/2.9360.
However, it appreciated versus the British pound to 5.7621/5.7703 from 5.7859/5.7941 yesterday.
The local note traded mixed against its Asean counterparts.
It improved vis-à-vis the Singapore dollar to 3.3146/3.3196 from 3.3167/3.3217, and rose against the Thai baht to 13.0211/13.0457 from 13.0233/13.0482.
It slipped against the Indonesian rupiah to 260.5/261.0 from 259.9/260.5, and weakened against the Philippine peso to 7.50/7.51 from 7.49/7.51 previously.

RIO DE JANEIRO, July 7 — Malaysia fully supports a comprehensive reform of the World Trade Organisation (WTO), said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. According to him, there is a need to breathe new life into the organisation so it can better navigate issues such as artificial intelligence, digital trade, and climate policy in the future. '(This should be done) without restricting the fair policy space of developing countries,' he said after meeting with WTO Director-General Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala here today (Monday in Malaysia). The meeting in Brazil's second-largest city was held to discuss the organisation's role in addressing current global trade challenges. 'I reaffirmed Malaysia's commitment to multilateralism and the need for the WTO to remain inclusive, effective, and responsive,' he added. Anwar and Okonjo-Iweala are in Rio de Janeiro to attend the 17th Brics Leaders' Summit. Okonjo-Iweala is a Nigerian economist who has served as the WTO Director-General since March 2021. In contrast to forums like the G20 Foreign Ministers' Meeting, which is smaller in scope and focused on global economic governance, the AMM brings together a broader mix of nations - within a structured platform grounded in consensus-building, regional stability and inclusive cooperation. While global platforms such as the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) may attract more leaders on an annual basis, the AMM remains Southeast Asia's foremost multilateral diplomatic forum. The four-day gathering will feature 24 ministerial-level meetings encompassing engagements with ASEAN Dialogue Partners, Sectoral Dialogue Partners and external partners - underlining its pivotal role in the regional diplomatic calendar.. Adding a layer of urgency to this year's ASEAN meetings is the mounting global economic uncertainty stemming from the looming July 9 deadline for the expiration of the United States' cooling off period on trade tariffs. For Oh, the key message from this upcoming gathering is clear -- peace and prosperity. "Regionally, we are facing several ongoing or looming crises, such as the situation in Myanmar and tensions between Thailand and Cambodia. At the same time, we are the fastest-growing region in the world. We need to explore how we can better engage with major economies and serve as a role model for less developed nations," he said.
