
Waymo lays groundwork for robotaxi revolution
The Alphabet-owned company has just taken another step in that direction with the opening of a new vehicle factory in Metro Phoenix, Arizona, in partnership with automaker Magna.

The new 239,000-square-foot site will build thousands of Jaguar I-PACEs equipped with Waymo's fully autonomous technology, Waymo said in a post on its website on Monday.
The company said that it now has more than 1,500 autonomous vehicles operating across San Francisco, Los Angeles, Phoenix, and Austin, providing more than 250,000 paid trips to users. Waymo also has plans to launch its service in Atlanta, Miami, and Washington, D.C. next year.
Those new cities will likely get many of the more than 2,000 fully autonomous I-PACE vehicles that come off the production line in 2026.
'We're proud to bring this technology — once thought to be the stuff of science fiction — to more and more riders across this country,' Waymo said.
Alphabet boss Sundar Pichai recently suggested that it was considering offering its autonomous vehicles for personal ownership, and also discussing the idea with Toyota, though with regulatory hurdles still high for fully driverless vehicles, such a scenario is likely to be a ways off.
Waymo appears to be performing well in what is a highly competitive sector. A number of rivals — General Motors-owned Cruise and Ford/VW-backed Argo AI among them — have found the endeavor of building out the technology and related services a challenge too far, forcing their closures in 2024 and 2022, respectively.
But it hasn't all been smooth sailing for Waymo, either, with various technology-related incidents on public roads prompting increased scrutiny from regulators.
While many studies have suggested that Waymo's autonomous vehicles are safer than human drivers, recent research by Professor Missy Cummings, director of George Mason University's Autonomy and Robotics Center, found that while Waymo performs better than human rideshare drivers, its crash rate — about 1,000 per 100 million miles — is still worse than the average human driver.
However, Cummings emphasized that comparing autonomous-vehicle safety to human drivers is scientifically problematic because humans collectively drive trillions of miles annually, while driverless cars have only logged tens of millions, making current comparisons statistically invalid.
Autonomous-car technology has made astonishing improvements in recent years, but its limited ability to handle all types of traffic scenarios and weather conditions means it will likely be some time before regulators grant companies like Waymo broader operational freedoms.

Your Guide to Buying a Hybrid Car or Truck in 2025
Hybrid vehicles—those combining an internal-combustion engine with one or more electric motors to power the wheels—come in all shapes and sizes. Folks seeking a fuel-efficient option are no longer limited to the Toyota Priuses and gas-sipping Hondas of the world, and even those models have come a long way from their humble beginnings a couple decades back. Regardless of whether or not you're specifically on the hunt for a gas-electric vehicle, chances are one or more will end up on your radar given the proliferation of this type of powertrain throughout the auto industry. We've created this guide to help shoppers of new and used hybrids understand their advantages, the differences between standard gas-electrics and plug-in models, new and used options, and any tax incentives that may be applicable. Why Consider a Hybrid? More and more models on the market today either offer a hybrid version or come only in gas-electric form. In the latter case, if that's the car you want, the decision to go hybrid is an easy one. If, however, you're deciding between gas-only and hybrid models, the choice may be more nuanced. Thanks to fuel-saving features such as regenerative braking and generally smaller, more-efficient engines that can call up an electric assist when needed, most hybrid vehicles use less fuel than comparable models, particularly when driving at lower speeds. On the other hand, at higher speeds, such as in our 75-mph highway fuel-economy test, hybrids tend to underperform their window-sticker value. Depending on how you drive, owning a hybrid has the potential to save you money at the pump and has benefits for the environment. But because of their more complex powertrains, hybrids tend to cost a little more upfront. That means it may take a few years to pay back the price premium. If you're not into math, the EPA's website offers a helpful comparison tool that will let you compare a hybrid vehicle with its nonhybrid counterpart, taking into account the prices of the two models, how many miles you drive annually, what portion of your driving is in the city, and the price of fuel. It will then spit out a personalized payback period that you can use to help decide. For instance, comparing a 2025 Kia Sportage EX AWD hybrid with the nonhybrid version and leaving the default values alone—15,000 miles per year, with 55 percent of them in the city, at $3.21 per gallon—shows that the $1300 price premium of the hybrid model would take two years to repay. Drive more miles per year, and the payback will happen sooner. Using less fuel and the accompanying monetary savings aren't the only reasons to opt for a hybrid, however. Hybridized sporty cars prioritize increased output over saving fuel. Examples include monster-power options from Mercedes-AMG and Bentley, as well as the plug-in Ferrari SF90. If you're looking for a hybrid pickup truck or SUV, it's a similar story with some models, such as many from Toyota, that get gas mileage that's equivalent compared to those of the nonhybrid powertrains they replace but yield more output. So a hybridized four-cylinder can make more power and torque than an unassisted V-6 engine without burning more fuel. Standard Hybrids vs. Plug-Ins Assuming you're open to a gas-electric powertrain, you may have one more decision to make. Within the hybrid category are two major sub-types: standard hybrids, which get their power solely from liquid fuel, and plug-in hybrids, which have larger onboard batteries that can be juiced by an external source, much like an EV. Plug-ins, or PHEVs, can also drive substantially further on electric-only power (typically between 15 and 40 miles) than can regular hybrids. Again, some models come only one way or the other, while popular vehicles such as the Toyota RAV4 can be had with either type of hybrid powertrain. Plug-ins tend to cost more due to their larger battery packs and more powerful electric motors, but they usually also outdo their standard-hybrid counterparts' fuel-economy ratings. You'll have to do the math to determine which makes more sense for you financially. Regarding charging, whether or not to go for a plug-in has more to do with where you park than how you drive. That high-capacity battery and charging port don't do you any good if you never make use of them. So if you street park or live in an apartment or condo that won't accommodate the installation of charging equipment, a plug-in probably doesn't make sense for you. But if you can plug in overnight at home or during your 9-to-5—preferably both—most if not all of your commute and daily errand-running may be covered by a plug-in's electric-only range. As long as you're not charging at pricey public stations, the cost per mile is much lower when running on electricity than gasoline. And unlike with an EV, a plug-in still has a fuel tank and gas engine to let you extend its comfortable range without having to worry about where to stop or how long it will take to refuel. New vs. Used Choosing between a brand-new or a pre-owned hybrid or plug-in often comes down to budget. Like any used vehicle, a hybrid depreciates—loses some of its value—over time, making the pre-owned route more affordable when comparing similar models. That said, hybrids sometimes hold their value better than nonhybrids. This brings us back to the payback calculation discussed earlier. You mileage and results may vary. There's also the option of a certified pre-owned vehicle for those who want the extra peace of mind that a longer warranty provides. Available Incentives Should you settle on a new or used plug-in hybrid, there may be some extra savings in your future. PHEVs with a battery capacity above 7 kWh and meeting some other requirements are eligible for a tax break. For new plug-ins, the price cap is an MSRP of $80,000 for trucks and SUVs, or $55,000 for cars; used PHEVs must sell for less than $25,000 to qualify. There are also household income limits for who can take advantage of these credits. The IRS spells everything out clearly in documents for new and used vehicles. Note that these tax breaks are set to expire on September 30, 2025. If you want to take advantage, you must purchase the vehicle by that date. Your state may offer additional incentives, so be sure to read up on those before making your selection. Whether your goal is to save fuel, save money, or maximize power, there's a new or used hybrid that's right for you. President Trump likes TikTok but the Chinese-owned short video app, used by some 170 million Americans, has to move to US ownership, Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick said on Sunday. Better EV Stock: Alphabet vs. Tesla (Hint: Robotaxis Are the Key)
Key Points The future of the auto industry lies in electric vehicles and ridesharing in autonomous vehicles. After many years in service, Waymo still can't point to a timeline of profitability. Tesla also faces challenges with its robotaxi offering, but it's well positioned, provided it can demonstrate safety and efficacy. These 10 stocks could mint the next wave of millionaires › Alphabet (NASDAQ: GOOG) (NASDAQ: GOOGL) isn't, strictly speaking, an electric vehicle (EV) company. However, its autonomous driving technology company, Waymo, is committed to only using EVs in its fleet. Funnily enough, it could be argued that Tesla (NASDAQ: TSLA) isn't really a pure EV company either. After all, most of its sky–high valuation is attributable to the potential of its robotaxis. However, the comparison of these two as EV companies is valid because the future of the auto industry is EVs, and ridesharing in autonomous vehicles will be a larger part of the industry in the future. But which company is better placed, and which is the better stock? Alphabet vs. Tesla It's entirely possible that Alphabet could decide to spin off Waymo, not least because it reportedly could be valued at more than $45 billion. Meanwhile, one of Tesla's biggest supporters, Cathie Wood's Ark Invest, ascribes 88% of Tesla's enterprise value (market cap plus net debt) to robotaxis in its investment case for the stock, producing an expected value of $2,600 for the stock in 2029. As I have previously discussed, the Ark targets should be taken with a pinch of salt, as its track record on Tesla hasn't been good. However, Ark's core argument is sound and points to Tesla being potentially a far more valuable stock than Waymo ever will be. Pathways to profitability The core argument is that Tesla's business model is scalable to profitability while Waymo's is far less so. The issue of Waymo's profitability arose in a recent CNBC interview with Waymo co-CEO Tekedra Mawakana, where she was asked whether Waymo is profitable. She replied, "We're proving out that it can be a profitable business." When asked when Waymo would be profitable, she replied, "not clear." It's also not clear if Alphabet/Waymo doesn't have an internal forecast for when it will hit profitability, or if Mawakana preferred not to divulge what the company considers an uncertain forecast. However, it's inconceivable that Alphabet is not internally crunching the numbers on this, and if it does decide to spin off Waymo, it's a question that needs to be answered. The point here is that a business that can't be profitable isn't worth anything, let alone $45 billion, so at some point, its management is going to have to set some timelines. Tesla and timelines Whereas investors need to hear more about timelines from Waymo, whose public self-driving ride-hailing service was launched in 2018, there's probably a need for fewer declared timelines from Tesla, or, rather, a need for more accurate ones. For example, in 2019, CEO Elon Musk famously told investors to expect a million self-driving vehicles on the road by mid-2020. In April 2022, he also stated that Tesla aspired to reach volume production of a dedicated robotaxi (Cybercab) in 2024 -- a timeline that has now been pushed back to 2026. These timeline estimates matter because plugging overly optimistic assumptions from them into valuation models can produce dramatically erroneous conclusions. Why Tesla is better positioned With all that said, Tesla has clear advantages over Waymo, provided it can demonstrate safety and reliability and achieve regulatory approvals. Its advantages include: Lower vehicle costs, with Musk aiming for a $30,000 price tag for a dedicated robotaxi, the Cybercab. Meanwhile, Wall Street analysts estimate Waymo's current vehicles cost more than $120,000. In addition, Tesla manufactures its own cars (Waymo does not), and existing Teslas can be converted into robotaxis using Tesla's as-yet-unreleased-to-the-public unsupervised full self-driving (FSD) software, giving Tesla a significant advantage in scaling the robotaxi business. Tesla's use of camera-centric technology is inherently less expensive than Waymo's combination of cameras, light detection and ranging (Lidar) lasers, and high-definition maps. Every Tesla car (robotaxi or not) on the road is effectively a data gatherer, with the data used to improve the AI that powers its AI models. As such, even though Waymo was first, Tesla has significantly more data than Waymo. Which is the better EV stock? Waymo may become profitable in the future, particularly if Lidar costs continue to drop. However, it's challenging to think that it will be a strong competitor to Tesla, provided Musk's company can master safe, unsupervised FSD using a camera-centric approach. That's a big "if" at this stage, but it becomes a smaller "if" as time goes by and Tesla expands its nascent robotaxi offering across new geographies. Tesla's next robotaxi launch is expected to be in Phoenix, as it plans to continue slowly building its robotaxi business. I think Tesla is the better EV stock when comparing Tesla and Alphabet.
