Watch: Ramaphosa hails Mabuza as ‘unifier' at state funeral service
According to Mpumalanga News, President Cyril Ramaphosa delivered the eulogy, describing Mabuza as a revered leader not only in his home province of Mpumalanga but across the country.
'He was a man of sharp intellect, deep pragmatism and quiet resolve. To some, he was the 'cat with nine lives', resilient in the face of political storms.
'But to many in his home province and beyond, he was a source of support, a provider of opportunities, and a champion for rural development and education,' said Ramaphosa, adding that Mabuza would be remembered as a unifier.
'As premier he was committed to unifying the different people of the Land of the Rising Sun. In death, he has once again brought us all together, across many nations and continents, to mourn, pay homage, remember and fondly reminisce.
'In his eternal sleep, he is demonstrating that our many differences along political party and racial lines, and the numerous disputes we may have, are eclipsed by our shared desire to follow his lead in building a just, equitable and caring society,' he added.
In a message from Mabuza's wife, Nonhlanhla Mabuza, read by Nomsa Mnisi, she reflected on their first meeting and how she came to terms with his dedication to public service.
'Serving the people of South Africa was your first love. Like any young wife, I struggled with that at first. But when I saw the joy and impact you brought to the people of Mpumalanga, I embraced my place beside you as your partner, with love and pride. The love you had for your children was tough but empowering.'
She said Mabuza touched many lives profoundly and recalled how she never worried when he left for his regular medical check-ups because he always returned home. She remembered their last phone call and being informed an hour later that he was being taken to hospital.
She vowed to carry the rest of her journey with the strength he left behind.
After the state funeral, the family held a private service in Barberton.

Central African Republic delays election for the 6th time since 2022
The Central African Republic (CAR) has postponed its August 2025 local elections to December, causing ongoing tensions, opposition boycott calls, and deepening mistrust in the electoral process. At a meeting of the Strategic Committee on 11 July 2025, Prime Minister Félix Moloua confirmed the postponement. Furthermore, the presidential and parliamentary votes scheduled for December 2025 will now coincide with the elections. The Central African Republic has not held a local election since 1988, and multiple postponements have occurred since 2022. The National Elections Authority (ANE) brought up issues with technology and budget deficits. ANE failed to finish the electoral register by the 29 May 2025 deadline. The administration was unable to gather the electorate by the decree's deadline of 4 June 2025. A United Nations (UN) expert, Yao Agbetse, expressed concern about serious issues impacting ANE operations. In addition, election funding only covers local elections; it does not cover the costs of presidential and legislative campaigns. Furthermore, staff deployment inaccuracy and contracting delays have seriously hampered the preparations. The opposition alliance, BRDC (Republican Bloc for the Defence of the Constitution), has suggested talks with President Touadéra and called for a comprehensive overhaul of the electoral authority. To increase transparency, Touadéra started biometric voter registration in 2024. UN experts and Security Council briefings indicate calls for 'urgent institutional reform' and improved preparations ahead of elections planned for December 2025. As of mid-2025, several registration centres had remained closed due to insecurity, and the electoral register had not been finalised in multiple prefectures, according to UN expert Yao Agbetse. The BRDC criticised ANE, questioning its ability to manage the electoral process and calling for its restructuring. The rebel leaders Ali Darass and Sembe Bobo formally dissolved their armed factions on 10 July 2025. They pledged to promote reconciliation during a ceremony officiated by President Touadéra. According to the UN, elections are crucial to preserving peace and establishing a democratic government. The Central African Republic continues to rank among the world's poorest nations despite its wealth of mineral resources. It is recommended that international partners increase their backing for reliable electoral procedures. Let us know by leaving a comment below, or send a WhatsApp to 060 011 021 11. Agency to investigate SASSA Disability Grant maladministration
In the broader scheme of social welfare, the SASSA Disability Grant is paid to relatively few beneficiaries. At last count, the total number of SASSA Disability Grant recipients numbered less than a million. Meanwhile, 13 million receive Child Support and 4 million Older Person benefits. However, Social Development Minister, Sisisi Tolashe, told a meeting in Khayelitsha last week, that investigations were underway to remedy any potential irregularities. Specifically, when it comes to the SASSA Disability Grant, the South African Social Security Agency is accused of not examining patients properly. You see, to qualify for a SASSA Disability Grant – never mind an asset and means test – you need an official letter by a government-approved doctor. Furthermore, Minister Tolashe said the department had heard of patients who have no right to a SASSA Disability Grant being awarded one. As such, she says the agency is recruiting new doctors on a three-year contract to remedy the situation, reports GroundUp . The minister was slated to attend a similar outreach programme meeting recently, but did not arrive, angering community members. Image: File As such, the minister explained that she doesn't want the agency being taken to court for denying those who legitimately qualify for the SASSA Disability Grant. So far in 2025, SASSA has also been under fire for stricter income and identity verification processes. Moreover, the department has defended its actions, saying it's not circumventing the accepted three-month review process. But, rather, it is working to ensure that taxpayer money isn't going to grant recipients with unverified ID or additional income. Minister Tolashe spoke candidly at an outreach programme meeting last week. Hundreds of grant beneficiaries attended. The event started late, and Khayelitsha residents voiced their grievances to the minister in person. Beyond issues with the SASSA Disability Grant, others mentioned unemployment, poor services at clinics, abuse of older persons and extortion of vulnerable beneficiaries. Other grievances mentioned include: Lack of youth programmes and educational camps. R370-a-month SRD grant was not enough. Lack of SASSA staff and facilities in underserved areas like Khayelitsha.
