Use of force during arrest of Sex Education Reece Richards star ‘reasonable', watchdog finds

ITV News15-05-2025
The use of force by officers to arrest Sex Education star Reece Richards after he was mistaken for a suspect 'was reasonable in the circumstances', the police watchdog found.
Actor Reece Richards shared footage of the moment he says Met Police officers "pepper-sprayed" and "kicked" him, as he was returning home to his mother after performing in musical 'Hairspray' in September last year
The video showed multiple officers piling on top of him, while his mother "screamed" in footage filmed from a nearby address.
Following an investiagtion, The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) found 'no indication that any officers acted in a manner that would justify the bringing of disciplinary proceedings or had committed a criminal offence'.
The watchdog also did not uphold a complaint by Richards that he was treated in a discriminatory manner because he was black.
The Netflix actor, who has been in 'You' and 'Sex Education', was walking to his home in Fulham after finishing a performance as Seaweed in the UK tour of Hairspray, before the incident.
He wrote on his Instagram post: "They pepper-sprayed me, kicked my legs out from under me, threw me to the ground, and handcuffed me ... multiple officers holding me down forcing my head into the ground. "
"I could hear my mum nearby, screaming and crying, begging them to let me go."
He continued: "The whole experience was embarrassing, deeply upsetting and exhausting."
IOPC director Amanda Rowe acknowledged the actor was an innocent bystander and that it 'would have been a frightening experience'.
She went on: 'Mr Richards' complaint detailed his understandable belief that he was detained and arrested because he was black, although the suspects were white.
'We found that officers were responding to a fast-moving incident and – given the only description of the suspects was that one was wearing dark clothing and their location – it was reasonable that the officer who saw Mr Richards and detained him thought he was a suspect.
'The evidence indicated that the officers' use of force was reasonable in the circumstances they encountered and perceived and Mr Richards was de-arrested as soon officers confirmed he was not involved.'
CCTV footage showed Richards walking along Fulham Palace Road, near to the collision, when one of the suspects ran past him, chased by an officer.
Richards dropped his backpack and ran, the watchdog said.
A lone officer then mistook Richards for one of the suspects, stopped the actor and withdrew his PAVA spray but did not discharge it, the IOPC said.
Two more officers arrived and told Richards to get to the ground.
There was a 'struggle' and one of the officers PAVA-sprayed Richards and he was handcuffed, the IOPC said.
The actor told them he was innocent and his mother later arrived at the scene.
Richards was de-arrested 14 minutes after he was stopped, the IOPC said.
Met Police Commander Owain Richards said: 'We are pleased the IOPC was able to determine the officers acted in good faith and appropriately.
'This was a fast-moving incident during which they were trying to detain three men who had fled from police during a pursuit. Their use of force was reasonable in the circumstances.
'Mr Richards was swiftly de-arrested as soon as officers confirmed he was not a suspect, but we absolutely acknowledge how distressing it must have been to be caught up in such an incident.
'We would be happy to meet him to discuss what happened should he wish to do so.'

Gwyneth Paltrow supports son Moses as he follows in Chris Martin's footsteps

The youngest child of a well-known musician and his acting ex-wife is following in the footsteps of his father by being in a band, who performed at a gig in the US this week The son of a well-known musician is now following in their footsteps by their pursuing a career in music. They took to the stage with their band at a concert earlier this week and their Oscar-winning mother was there for support. ‌ Moses Martin, 19, is the youngest child of Coldplay 's Chris Martin, 48, and actor Gwyneth Paltrow, 52. The exes, who split in 2014 before getting divorce, but who have remained on good terms, are also parents to Apple Martin, 21. ‌ Like his father, Moses is a member of a band, with him one third of trio Dancer. His group performed at a concert in Chicago recently whilst supporting another band. It comes after Chris issued a warning to his own fans during his first gig with Coldplay since a kiss cam scandal earlier this month. ‌ Moses' band Dancer took to the stage at the Thalia Hall in Chicago last night. Alongside his bandmates Orlando and Andy, he opened for duo Royel Otis - who are due to perform at Reading Festival and Leeds Festival soon - at the venue. Prior to the gig, Dancer posted about their appearance on platforms like Instagram. Alongside a video of the trio performing together whilst sat on the back of a truck, they shared details of the gig with their followers. ‌ "I love this band," one person reacted to the post. Another wrote in the comments section: "Amazing." Someone else responded to the band's post: "See ya there." Someone else asked: "How can I listen to your songs???" Dancer teased over potential music being released soon, with the band's account replying: "Soon." ‌ Gwyneth liked the post and shared her excitement over the upcoming gig in the comments section. Teasing that she would be there to support her son, she wrote: "Can't wait." She later revealed that she was at the show in a post on her own account on the platform. The actor uploaded a photo that was seemingly taken backstage at the venue last night. It showed three microphone kits, each with a band member's name on, and Gwyneth didn't provide any caption. More recently, in a post uploaded to her Instagram Story earlier today, she shared a photo of the band on stage. ‌ Gwyneth shared her pride over Moses being a musician in a tribute for his birthday on the platform back in April. She wrote at the time: "Happy birthday [Moses]. Honestly, you are a dream come true. You are deeply kind and brilliant." She continued by writing to him: "You have an incredible intellect and you are so gifted, so talented. I listen to your music on repeat and miss you so much at college. And today more than ever. I love you my boy."

Adam Collard feared Laura Woods' miscarriage was 'karma' for his love-rat past

Former Love Island star Adam Collard has admitted he blames his past "love rat" ways for bringing "bad karma" onto his relationship with sports presenter Laura Woods Adam Collard has revealed he blames his past actions for fiancee Laura Woods having a miscarriage. The former Love Island star admitted he believes his previous "love rat" persona brought "bad karma" on the pair. ‌ The Geordie star, 29, confessed he believes his dating show antics on the likes of the ITV show - where he appeared twice - and Celebs Go Dating brought negative energy onto his current relationship. The gym owner is set to be put through his paces on Celebrity SAS: Who Dares Wins, taking part in a series of gruelling physical challenges. ‌ Speaking on the new series, dad-of-one Adam explained his thought process. He told the cameras: "I know it's a terrible way to look at it, but I felt like it was bad karma for me being on dating shows and upsetting too many people. ‌ "I felt like that was some high power's way of being like, 'Well, there you go, that's what you have to carry'." He went on: "I was just a cocky little p***k, being a love rat jumping from girl to girl. I want to show I'm not that man any more." And revealing why he chose to test himself on the endurance show, the fitness fanatic explained it was the mental test he desired. "'I had a lot of stuff going on before I went on Celebrity SAS: Who Dares Wins," he said. "And I've got to be honest but credit to the show, I actually think it had the most positive impact on my mental health." Adam began dating sports presenter Laura in October 2023. The following year they announced they were expecting their first child and in April 2025 they welcomed their son Leo. The pair have both kept their followers up to date with their family life and at the turn of the year, Adam posted a candid message on his social media. At the time, he wrote: "2024, the hardest year of my life." He went on: "I've seen lot of amazing 2024 posts over the last few days... but if you're struggling right now, remember that Instagram is a highlights reel, and if you're struggling you aren't alone. ‌ "Struggled with my mental health more than ever. Lost something important. Struggled with injuries. Suffered with addiction to painkillers and sleeping pills and justified it as 'it doesn't affect fitness' or because it wasn't booze. "Got diagnosed with depression. Prescribed anti-depressants. Lost family. Drifted from certain friends. Tried to reach out to people and failed. Felt lost." ‌ But he admitted he also had a lot to be positive about, including his son and relationship. At the time, Laura issued a gushing response. In the comments section, replying: "Proud of you. You're going to be the most amazing dad x."
