Elizabeth Szokol, Ilhee Lee shoot 62s to share the lead in the ShopRite LPGA Classic
Playing in the afternoon on Seaview's Bay Course, Szokol followed her opening birdie run with a bogey on No. 6, then added birdies on Nos. 8, 9, 13 and 16.
'Happy to get off to a great start and really looking forward to the weekend,' Szokol said. 'Lots of golf left. Really excited to see good golf and hard work paying off today.'
The 30-year-old American teamed with Cheyenne Knight to win the 2023 Dow Great Lakes Bay Invitational for her only tour victory.
Top-ranked Nelly Korda opened with a 71, and No. 2 Jeeno Thitikul had a 68. Maja Stark, the U.S. Women's Open winner Sunday at Erin Hills, shot 70.
Lee birdied three straight holes three times — on Nos. 3-5, 8-10 and 16-18 — and had one bogey in her morning round. The 36-year-old South Korean won the 2013 Pure Silk-Bahamas LPGA Classic for her lone tour title.
'I don't have expectation,' Lee said. 'I just play golf. I just come out, have fun. That's all I do.'
Akie Iwai of Japan was third after a 65 in one of only two 54-hole tournaments left on the LPGA Tour schedule. The other is the Walmart NW Arkansas Open.
'Normally four days, so I feel fast, shorter tournament,' Iwai said. 'That's why we must make a lot birdies.'
Wei-Ling Hsu was at 66 with Aline Krauter, Ayaka Furue, Polly Mack, Saki Baba, Dewi Weber and Gurleen Kaur.
Defending champion Linnea Strom shot 72.

Austin Wells loses track of the outs in 9th inning and costs the Yankees a late opportunity
NEW YORK (AP) — Perhaps nobody was happier the Yankees won Wednesday night than catcher Austin Wells, after his embarrassing mental lapse on the bases cost New York an opportunity in the ninth inning. 'I think I just was being an idiot," he said. Anthony Volpe hit a tying homer off Tampa Bay Rays closer Pete Fairbanks with one out in the ninth, then Wells singled and advanced to second base when Trent Grisham tried to bunt for a hit. Grisham was thrown out at first for the second out and credited with a sacrifice. Wells, however, thought the inning was over and wandered off the bag. He got tagged in a rundown for the third out, sending a back-and-forth game to extra innings as fans in the Yankee Stadium crowd of 45,355 groaned. 'He thought there were three outs," New York manager Aaron Boone said. "Obviously, can't happen. With the base coaches we say the right thing. We go through with the pitcher, their time to the plate and number (of) outs. What do you say? Can't happen.' Instead of having seven-time All-Star and 2022 NL MVP Paul Goldschmidt at bat with the potential winning run on second base, the Yankees were resigned to keep slugging it out with Tampa Bay in extra innings. 'Just thought there was three outs,' Wells said. 'Very embarrassed and disappointed, for sure. You know, you let the guys down when you do that. You give away an out like that in a big spot, so that's disappointing — and definitely no good thoughts going on there.' Fortunately for Wells, his teammates bailed him out. New York fell behind 4-3 in the 10th, tied it again on Cody Bellinger's run-scoring triple and finally won 5-4 in the 11th on Ryan McMahon's game-ending single to deep center field after a critical balk by reliever Kevin Kelly. The Yankees remained four games behind first-place Toronto in the AL East. 'I mean, everyone did such a great job tonight," Wells said. "Started in the beginning with (rookie pitcher Will Warren). Gave us a great position to come back in that game. And I mean, all the huge hits that happened and then all the huge innings that the relievers threw. What a game. Why ESPN analyst insists Joe Burrow's elite despite Bengals missing playoffs
Joe Burrow had an outstanding individual 2024 season for the Cincinnati Bengals, posting a 70.6 completion percentage, 4,918 passing yards, 43 touchdowns, and nine interceptions. However, this production wasn't enough for the Bengals to reach the playoffs. Furthermore, Cincinnati have failed to make the playoffs in back-to-back seasons, putting pressure on this team to reach the postseason. Burrow and his top two targets, Tee Higgins and Ja'Marr Chase, are locked up for the foreseeable future. If the Bengals miss the playoffs for a third straight year, Burrow is sure to face criticism. ESPN NFL analyst Ryan Clark commented on whether another postseason without Cincinnati should lead to questions about whether the 28-year-old is still an elite quarterback. Nonetheless, Clark states that none of those mishaps are on Burrow. "There's a drop in the corner in Game 1," Clark added. "There's a fumble going across the line against the New England Patriots. Burrow did fumble against Kansas City, but on fourth down, you get a pass interference that gives Kansas City the ball back to go win the game. "You can see what happened in the first two games. And so, do they have to fix that? Yes. But none of these problems are Joe Burrow. If they got 99 problems, Joe Burrow ain't one." It will be interesting to see if Burrow and the Bengals can snap the two-season playoff drought, or else questions of the player's status among the top quarterbacks will get louder.

Eovaldi outduels Soriano in the Rangers' 6-3 victory over the Angels
ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) — Nathan Eovaldi limited Los Angeles to a run in seven innings, Adolis García hit a two-run homer in the eighth and the Texas Rangers beat the Angels 6-3 on Wednesday night. Eovaldi (9-3) helped the Rangers avoid a series sweep and snap the Angels' three-game winning streak. He allowed six hits and struck out four. Marcus Semien was 3 for 5 with an RBI and two runs. He doubled and opened the scoring on Wyatt Langford's single in the fourth, and had an RBI single in the sixth. Langford was 2 for 5 with a double. Robert Garcia pitched the ninth for his ninth save. José Soriano (7-8) pitched seven innings for Los Angeles. He allowed two earned runs and struck out seven. Luis Rengifo tied it at 1 with an RBI single in the fourth. García broke hit open in the eighth with his 15th home run of the season, and Texas tacked on two more runs to pull away. Nolan Schanuel hit a two-run homer for Los Angeles in the eighth. Corey Seager extended his majors-best on-base streak to 29 games in the ninth with a single to right. Key moment García's eighth-inning homer gave Texas breathing room.
