Rahul Gandhi's 'vote theft' claim an afterthought, says EC

NEW DELHI: Election Commission of India on Thursday said leader of opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi 's allegations of "vote theft" during the 2024 Lok Sabha elections in Karnataka appear to be an afterthought, given that Congress neither filed a single appeal with election officials after publication of the state's final electoral roll in Jan 2024 nor did it challenge the results in state high court through an election petition. Talking to reporters in Parliament complex, Rahul claimed that Congress has "concrete 100% proof" of "cheating in an LS seat" in Karnataka and warned that "if you (EC) think you are going to get away with this... you are mistaken... we are going to come for you". The Congress MP said opposition would ensure that EC is held accountable. Dismissing his charges as "baseless" in a statement, EC said: "It is highly unfortunate that rather than filing an election petition as per section 80 of Representation of the People (RP)Act, 1951, or if filed, awaiting verdict of HC, he has not only made baseless allegations but also chosen to threaten EC, which is a constitutional body." With his allegations coming more than a year after the LS polls result, EC said it was wondering why "such baseless and threatening claims were being made against it and the CEC, and that too now." It added that the losing Congress candidates did not file a single election petition to challenge the result, despite Representation of the People Act, 1951 allowing this within 45 days of declaration of result. Others, however, did file 10 election petitions in HC. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Villas For Sale in Dubai Might Surprise You Dubai villas | search ads Get Deals Undo Countering Rahul's "unwarranted threatening statements", the Karnataka chief electoral officer (CEO) on X said copies of the draft and final electoral roll for the state's 224 assembly seats were provided to recognised parties, including Congress, on Oct 27, 2023, and Jan 22, 2024, respectively. Between publication of the draft and final roll, around 9.2 lakh claims and objections were received and settled across 34 districts. Neither Congress nor any other entity avail the two-stage appeal option available under Representation of the People Act, 1951, the post said. Meanwhile, backing RJD functionary Tejashwi Yadav suggested possibility of boycotting Bihar elections over the special revision of electoral rolls issue, Congress' K C Venugopal said a political party's biggest weapon in a democracy is the voters' list and if that is compromised, with names being deleted and lists not being clean, then you are challenging democracy. "Let there not be an election and there be one party. Let Election Commission rule that. That is what Yadav meant by his comment about boycotting," Venugopal said.

Karnataka smart meter case: Court orders registration of complaint against minister George, officials

Bengaluru: The simmering controversy over the tendering process of smart meters in Karnataka took an interesting turn with the special court for elected representatives on Wednesday directing enforcement agencies to register a private complaint report (PCR) against energy minister KJ George and others. Based on a complaint filed by BJP functionaries CN Ashwath Narayan, SR Vishwanath, and Dheeraj Muniraj, special court judge Santhosh Gajanan Bhat directed officials to submit a status report on the complaint filed with the Lokayukta in April 2025 pertaining to the same issue, besides registering a PCR. The complaint also named additional chief secretary (energy) Gaurav Gupta, previous Bescom MD Mahantesh Bilagi, and Bescom technical director SG Ramesh as accused in the case. The complainants alleged that all the accused did not comply with the tender rules while rolling out the smart meter tender. "A tender was floated in Sept 2024 to provide smart meter services, and it was allotted to one of the bidders, a Davanagere-based shell company. Rather than floating separate tenders for each of the Escoms (electricity supply companies), tenders were floated only for Bescom. The entire process not only violated provisions under the Karnataka Transparency in Public Procurement Act, but also went against the guidelines laid down by the Karnataka Electricity Regulatory Commission," the complaint read. BJP legislators have been hitting out at the state govt and accusing George, who also holds the position of Bescom chairman, of misappropriation in the smart meter tender ever since the issue snowballed into a major controversy during the budget session of legislature. Nothing illegal: George Reacting sharply to the development, the minister retorted: "Is there a court order? If so, give a copy to me and I will react to that." Hitting out at the BJP, he added: "There is a group comprising Ashwath Narayan and others. They have already filed a petition in the high court and have also complained to the governor. Now, a case has also been filed in the people's representatives court. There is nothing illegal and the tender process has been done according to the law. I'm ready to explain everything if needed. Rather than indulging in hit-and-run methods, let them produce documents to the court and our advocates will also argue. Eventually, I will bow to whatever the court orders." BJP demands George's ouster BJP legislator CN Ashwath Narayan on Thursday demanded the dismissal of energy minister KJ George. "There is no malice — this is in public interest," he said, alleging that contracts were given to blacklisted firms, regulations were flouted, and inflated rates were imposed. Narayan questioned whether George would resign, before urging chief minister Siddaramaiah to act immediately to uphold justice and govt accountability

Trump says no to 'woke' Artificial Intelligence in AI action plan for US

The White House order detailing US President Donald Trump's Artificial Intelligence action plan for the country has specified his plans to prevent "woke AI" in the federal government. The US President came down heavily of DEI initiatives, saying in context of AI, it was responsible for "distortion of factual information about race or sex".(AP) The order, released on Wednesday, outlines a sweeping new plan for America's 'global dominance' in artificial intelligence. Trump signed three executive orders for this plan, and getting rid of 'woke' in AI was one of its objectives. The US President came down heavily of diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) initiatives, saying in context of AI, it was responsible for "distortion of factual information about race or sex". "DEI displaces the commitment to truth in favor of preferred outcomes and, as recent history illustrates, poses an existential threat to reliable AI," the White House order read. Listing out examples, Trump said an AI model recently altered the race or gender of historical figures because "it was trained to prioritize DEI requirements at the cost of accuracy", and another one refused to create images on achievements of white people, while heeding to the same request for other races. "In yet another case, an AI model asserted that a user should not 'misgender' another person even if necessary to stop a nuclear apocalypse," the order read. While Trump noted that AI models in private markets should not be regulated, he called for checking models being procured in the federal government, ensuring they do not "sacrifice truthfulness and accuracy to ideological agendas". "LLMs shall be neutral, nonpartisan tools that do not manipulate responses in favor of ideological dogmas such as DEI," the order read, calling for developers to make sure outputs don't include "ideological judgments" unless asked for by the end user. Trump's Artificial intelligence action plan comes in the wake of increased use of such models in daily lives, and notes that AI would play a critical role in how skills are consumed and information is shared among Americans.
