New pilot program looks for restaurant owners to help boost Indian Orchard
The idea of revitalizing the dining district in Indian Orchard dates back to 2018, when Representative Orlando Ramos wrote a letter to the editor.
Indian Orchard used to be home to three of the biggest employers of Western Massachusetts. 'We had Chapman Valve, we were home to Mount Santo, as well as the Indian Orchard Mills. And a lot of the people who worked there, remained in Indian Orchard. Their families still live in Indian Orchard,' said Representative Orlando Ramos, Democrat – 9th Hampden.
Many long-time residents saw Indian Orchard as a main attraction, but not so much in the last few years. Therefore, city officials, state legislators, and the Latino Economic Development Corporation made a goal to support new and existing minority owned restaurants.
'Today we are going to launch the Indian Orchard Main Street Dining District Pilot Program,' said Andrew Melendez, Founder, Latino Economic Development Corporation.
Starting on Main Street, the program will offer to pay security deposits, first and last month's rent for 3 new restaurants. $5,000 to $10,000 in grants will also be available to current district restaurant owners for upgrades or relocation costs.
The historic Pleasant Snack Bar on Main Street is one of many restaurants that have been vacant for 4 to 5 months. Now it will be one of many restaurants that will benefit from this pilot program.
This comes after Representative Ramos and the Western Mass legislative delegation secured $100,000 from the fiscal year 2025 budget.
'We need capital infusion to support, we're going to be doing coaching and technical assistance, coaching to support our businesses to get going, everyone will receive book-keeping and accounting and marketing support, and also connections,' said Melendez.
To help revitalize the dining district, new and existing restaurant owners can submit a Request for Proposal to the Latino EDC.

Democrats decry firing Bureau of Labour Statistics director
Senate Democrats are quickly jumping on the dismissal of Erika McEntarfer, the director of the Bureau of Labour Statistics, warning that it shows Trump is acting like a dictator. In a Senate floor speech, Democratic leader Sen. Chuck Schumer said, 'Donald Trump sometimes admires dictators, he admires them. Well, he sometimes acts just like them. It's classic Donald Trump. When he gets the news he doesn't like, he shoots the messenger.' Other Senate Democrats said it showed Trump was not facing up to the realities of the economy. 'This is the act of somebody who is soft, weak and afraid to own up to the reality of the damage his chaos is inflicting on our economy,' said Sen. Ron Wyden, the top Democrat on the Senate Finance Committee.

Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. Economists and Democrat lawmakers have slammed President Donald Trump for firing the director of the Bureau of Labor Statistics after they published a weaker-than-expected jobs report for July. Trump accused director Erika McEntarfer, without evidence, of manipulating the reports for political reasons and announced on Truth Social that he had directed his team to fire her "immediately." "Kill the messenger," Sen. Amy Klobuchar wrote on X as she shared an article about Trump's move. Economist Ernie Tedeschi added on X that he'd worked with McEntarfer directly and knew "no economist who is more data-focused & devoted to truth in statistics." "She never shied from speaking truth to power when the data were disappointing. Nothing would be worse for US credibility than political meddling in our economic data," he added. This is a breaking news story, updates to follow.

Trump 'soft, weak and afraid' in firing labor statistics chief McEntarfer: Wyden
The top Democrat on the Senate Finance Committee called President Donald Trump's firing of Bureau of Labor Statistics Commissioner Erika McEntarfer on Friday "the act of somebody who is soft, weak and afraid to own up to the reality of the damage his chaos is inflicting on our economy." "Bottom line, Trump wants to cook the books," said Sen. Ron Wyden of Oregon in a statement shortly after Trump fired McEntarfer on the heels of a weaker-than-expected jobs report by the BLS. "Trump can't get through a single day without making some catastrophic decision that undermines confidence in the U.S. economy, and although the Bureau of Labor Statistics might sound obscure to people outside Washington, Trump's interference with jobs data is a nightmare scenario that will do long-lasting harm," Wyden said. "It's long past time for Senate Republicans to find the courage to stand up to this dictatorial behavior, and there is no way the Senate can accept some Trump lackey as the head of BLS," the senator said. Wyden's criticism was echoed by Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., who said Trump was acting like a dictator and a "bad leader" who "shoots the messenger" after hearing bad news about the economy. "Well, Donald Trump, firing her isn't going to relieve the chaos that you created with your ramshackle tariff regime," Schumer said on the Senate floor. The White House did not immediately reply to a request for comment from CNBC on Wyden's statement. Trump, in a social media post, had accused McEntarfer, who was appointed by former President Joe Biden, of falsifying jobs report numbers before the 2024 election "to try and boost" the chances of Democratic presidential nominee Kamala Harris against Trump "We need accurate Jobs Numbers," Trump wrote in the Truth Social post. "I have directed my Team to fire this Biden Political Appointee, IMMEDIATELY. She will be replaced with someone much more competent and qualified." In a subsequent post, Trump wrote, "In my opinion, today's Jobs Numbers were RIGGED in order to make the Republicans, and ME, look bad — Just like when they had three great days around the 2024 Presidential Election, and then, those numbers were "taken away" on November 15, 2024, right after the Election, when the Jobs Numbers were massively revised DOWNWARD, making a correction of over 818,000 Jobs — A TOTAL SCAM." Secretary Lori Chavez-DeRemer said in a post on X that BLS Deputy Commissioner William Wiatrowski will serve as Acting Commissioner" of the BLS until a permanent replacement is installed.
