Why a judge dismissed Justin Baldoni's lawsuit against Blake Lively and The New York Times

Yahoo10-06-2025
A federal judge dismissed actor Justin Baldoni's extortion and defamation claims he brought against actress Blake Lively, The New York Times and others, while still giving Baldoni a chance to pursue limited contract-related claims in the legal feud between the 'It Ends With Us' co-stars.
Baldoni's legal complaint came in January after Lively brought her own in December alleging sexual harassment, retaliation, breach of contract and intentional and negligent infliction of emotional distress. Her suit is still pending.
Dismissing Baldoni's claims in a 132-page opinion Monday, U.S. District Judge Lewis Liman in New York summarized them in two broad categories: First, that Lively, helped by actor Ryan Reynolds (Lively's husband) and publicist Leslie Sloane, threatened to refuse to promote the film, which Baldoni directed, and to attack him in the press if she didn't get control and credit. And second, that Lively, Sloane, Reynolds and the Times spread a false narrative that Baldoni committed sexual misconduct against Lively and engaged in a smear campaign against her.
Rejecting the first category, Liman said Baldoni failed to adequately allege that Lively's threats were extortion rather than just bargaining over working conditions.
Rejecting the second category, Liman said Baldoni failed to adequately allege any false statements made to the Times, other than statements made by Lively in a complaint she filed with the California Civil Rights Department, which Liman said were legally privileged. The Times published a December story headlined, ''We Can Bury Anyone': Inside a Hollywood Smear Machine,' citing Lively's complaint.
Liman said Baldoni has until June 23 to file an amended complaint limited to certain contract-related claims.

Ringo Starr Helped Rewrite Scenes for the Beatles Biopics: I ‘Would Never Do That'

Don't worry, Beatles fan: Ringo Starr is involved in that upcoming four-part Beatles biopic. The iconic drummer recently told The New York Times that he met with director Sam Mendes to go through one of the scripts line-by-line. The duo collaborated together for two days in April 2025. While Starr did not cite which out of the assumed four scripts he reviewed, Jez Butterworth ('Ford v Ferrari'), Peter Straughan ('Conclave') and Jack Thorne ('Adolescence') are all announced as writing the screenplays. More from IndieWire Michael Madsen, Dead at 67: A Gifted Character Actor and One of Quentin Tarantino's Finest Collaborators Rob Reiner on the Making of His Almost-Didn't-Happen Comedy Classic 'This Is Spinal Tap' Starr said he gave 'extensive notes' to director Mendes while fact-checking the scripts. The scenes in particular that depicted Starr's family and his first wife, Maureen Starkey Tigrett (whose casting has not yet been announced), were among the sequences that Starr urged to have reworked. 'He [Mendes] had a writer — very good writer, great reputation, and he wrote it great, but it had nothing to do with Maureen and I,' Starr said. 'That's not how we were. I'd say, 'We would never do that.'' Starr added, 'But he'll do what he's doing, and I'll send him peace and love.' Barry Keoghan will portray Starr in the project, which is being referred to as 'The Beatles — A Four Film Cinematic Event.' Harris Dickinson will portray John Lennon, with Paul Mescal as Paul McCartney and Joseph Quinn as George Harrison. Starr was married Tigrett from 1965 to 1975. The couple had three children, former Oasis/Who drummer Zak Starkey, plus Jason and Lee. Starr later married actress and model Barbara Bach in 1981. Starr previously told Entertainment Tonight that he approves of Keoghan's casting. 'I believe he's somewhere taking drum lessons, and I hope not too many,' he joked. Mendes will direct all four biopics, each of which will center on one band member's POV during their astronomical rise to fame. Per an official announcement, the films will 'intersect' with each other and 'tell the astonishing story of the greatest band in history.' The first installment is set to be in theaters in 2027 from Sony Pictures. 'I'm honored to be telling the story of the greatest rock band of all time, and excited to challenge the notion of what constitutes a trip to the movies,' Mendes said in a press statement. 'Reservoir Dogs' star Michael Madsen dies at 67

Actor Michael Madsen, known for his roles in "Reservoir Dogs" and "Kill Bill," has died at the age of 67. Madsen's death was confirmed Thursday by his publicist, Liz Rodriguez. Madsen was found unresponsive Thursday morning at his home in Malibu, California, and is believed to have died due to cardiac arrest, Rodriguez told ABC News. "In the last two years Michael Madsen has been doing some incredible work with independent film including upcoming feature films Resurrection Road, Concessions and Cookbook for Southern Housewives, and was really looking forward to this next chapter in his life," Rodriguez said in a statement also written by Madsen's managers, Susan Ferris and Ron Smith. "Michael was also preparing to release a new book called 'Tears For My Father: Outlaw Thoughts and Poems,' currently being edited." The statement continued, "Michael Madsen was one of Hollywood's most iconic actors, who will be missed by many." Madsen had a decadeslong career in Hollywood that included roles in over 300 films, including several that are still in production, according to his IMDB page. In 2022, Madsen suffered a personal tragedy when his son, 26-year-old Hudson Madsen, died by suicide. Madsen said in a statement to The Los Angeles Times after his son's death that he was trying to "make sense" of it. "I am in shock as my son, whom I just spoke with a few days ago, said he was happy -- my last text from him was 'I love you dad,'" Madsen said in a statement to the Times. "I didn't see any signs of depression. It's so tragic and sad. I'm just trying to make sense of everything and understand what happened."
