The massive rebuild of Fishermans Jetty in Mornington Harbour is underway

Time Out21-05-2025
Ahoy, there! Anglers and sailors alike will be glad to know that works are officially underway to rebuild the much-loved Fishermans Jetty in Mornington Harbour. The news comes off the back of two other Mornington Peninsula jetties – the Warneet North and South jetties – also receiving a fresh makeover.
Living up to its name, Fishermans Jetty has been a favourite for casting a line or berthing a boat in the harbour. Originally built between 1880 and 1885, the jetty has been repaired one too many times over the years – and by 2020, it had deteriorated so badly that it had to be closed to the public.
The Allan Labor government stepped in. As part of an $18 million investment in the 2022-23 Victorian budget, a project was developed to restore the area. It promises safe berthing access and improved public use, while supporting local tourism and creating jobs in the area. It's a vital investment – Victoria's local ports and piers contribute more than $900 million each year to regional and coastal economies through tourism, marine activities and commercial fishing.
'The new jetty will provide safer access for anglers, boaters and tourists, continuing the momentum from completed projects around Port Phillip at Altona and the flagship $53 million St Kilda Pier redevelopment,' said minister for ports and freight, Melissa Horne.
The first stage – dismantling and removing the old jetty – was completed in 2024. Construction of the new jetty began in April, with completion expected in the second half of this year.
While respecting the area's heritage, the new design will be modern, inclusive and functional to meet current and future needs – for recreational users, commercial operators and tourists alike. The rebuilt jetty will have durable timber decking for a traditional look and feel, safe water access via ladders, dedicated berthing spaces, all-abilities access to meet Disability Discrimination Act standards and improved water access for harbour users.
If all goes to plan, the new-look Fishermans Jetty will preserve an iconic part of Mornington's coastal charm, while enhancing the harbour as both a working port and a recreational haven for generations to come.

Revamp complete at Ayr's Queen's Court as retail units available for let

The "unloved and unoccupied" Queen's Court Arcade in Ayr has received a facelift and the owners are now seeking new businesses to move in. An "unloved and unoccupied" retail centre in Ayr has been refurbished and is now ready to welcome new businesses to the town centre. ‌ Units at the Victoria era Queen's Court arcade have been "sympathetically" revamped and are now available for let. ‌ Retail, leisure and office spaces as well as a 50-cover restaurant are all available at the centre which has faced challenges in recent years. ‌ However, new owners have come in and are now looking to give Queen's Court a new lease of life. Already confirmed in the refurbished arcade are Puck Espressoo, an independent coffee brand, opening this month as well as an unnamed clothing retailer and a hair salon. Based between the Sandgate and Newmarket Street, Queen's Court was originally built as a stable block. A variety of spaces are available from £5,000 per year. Market the available units are chartered surveyors DM Hall. ‌ Anthony Zdanowicz from DM Hall said: 'Queen's Court is a fine example of elegant Victorian architecture which, sadly, had been lying unloved and unoccupied for some years. 'Since it passed into new ownership, however, it has undergone a renaissance and retail, leisure and office units are now available for lease, several of which are already under offer. ‌ 'The Royal Bank of Scotland is located opposite Queen's Court and the local area is characterised by a mix of quality retail leisure, licensed and professional businesses. 'Most properties in Queen's Court qualify for full business rates relief and are competitively priced, with flexible terms available, ideal for local business owners. ‌ 'The owners are open to a variety of uses that will add to an artisanal mix and would be delighted to show interested parties around in what will be a rejuvenated town centre experience. 'Anyone requiring further information should contact me, Anthony Zdanowicz, or call 07768 031 297.'

Seafront hotel in Llandudno sold for first time in 75 years

A prominent seafront hotel in Llandudno has changed hands for the first time in 75 years. Christie & Co announced the sale of The Merrion Hotel, which has been purchased by expanding Four Saints Hotels group. Over the decades, the hotel has grown from a 20-bedroom guest house to a significant hotel property in one of the most desirable locations in Llandudno. Directly fronting onto the promenade, the five-storey Victorian building has 62 ensuite bedrooms, many with sweeping views across Llandudno Bay. There is also a bar and lounge area which regularly hosts entertainment, and a restaurant which is open to the public. The hotel has been owned by the Bream family for over 75 years, and has been sold by brothers Gareth and Paul Bream due to retirement. Four Saints Hotels, who already own Brig Y Don, Lauriston Court, and Headlands hotels, also located on the Llandudno seafront, have bought the site. The historic building's facade features wood paneling and blends Tudor, Georgian, Victorian and 1930s features. And to restore the spot to its former glory, the timber doors were carefully restored after becoming faded. Before it was a Greggs bakery, the location used to be long to Oliver & Son - a grocer and tea dealer. The grocer is believed to have been established in the late 1700s and stayed in Bury St Edmunds until the 1960s. Taking to Reddit, one user claimed that they had found " the countries poshest Greggs" in Bury St Edmunds. Another user dubbed it "Ye Olde Greggs", whilst a third joked, "so Diagon Alley now has a Greggs" - comparing the spot to something out of Harry Potter. According to the East Anglian Daily Times, Tony Rowson from Greggs said: "Emmerson Critchley did a fantastic job of tastefully reconstructing the features of this shop, to ensure a modern feel whilst keeping the essence of this historical building for the local community." It is hoped the restoration work will be a "good fix for probably 100 years". And this isn't the only beautiful location in the town though, with another Reddit user revealing: "You should see the town's Wetherspoons…" I went to the UK's biggest Wetherspoons with rooftop bar overlooking the beach The Corn Exchange - also located on Abbeygate Street - is in a Grade I listed 19th century building. The venue first opened as The Corn Exchange in 1862 and Wetherspoons refurbished the building in 2011. Many of the original features still remain, including a grand exterior. On the first floor, the pub features a room with a long marble bar and a domed glass ceiling too. One recent visitor said: "The converted Corn Exchange looks like a Grecian palace, relaxed atmosphere, spacious surroundings." 3 Often dubbed the most beautiful Greggs in the UK, the site recently underwent a 18-month restoration project Credit: Greggs Bury St Edmunds is believed to have inspired author Charles Dickens as well. The town is mentioned in the opening of Dickens' novel Pickwick Papers, including the Angel Hotel - where the Victorian author had previously stayed. The town was also chosen as a set for the 2019 film The Personal History of David Copperfield - an adaptation of another of Dickens' stories. 11 of the prettiest Wetherspoons across the UK have also been named. Plus, Britain's most beautiful pubs for 2025 have been revealed from historic beer houses to cosy village bars.
