Tall ship forced to abort departure from Whitehaven Harbour
The Galeon Andalucia has been docked in Whitehaven since last Tuesday evening and has welcomed thousands of people on board.
The ship, which is a 17th century Spanish Galleon replica, was scheduled to leave the harbour in the early hours of Wednesday morning, after extending its visit by two days.
But the departure was abandoned after the ship experienced some issues with wind gusts. It is understood that some minor damage has been done to a pontoon.
The ship is now back on The Sugar Tongue and is expected to leave at 4pm today, if weather conditions are favourable. Its next stop is the Bristol Harbour Festival where it is scheduled to arrive by Thursday.
Gerard Richardson, deputy lieutenant, one of the organisers of the visit, said: 'Thankfully from initial reports no one was injured and to be honest after that everything else is detail.
'We don't have knowledge of the full extent of damage caused as yet but It's a reminder of the perils of the sea. Hats off to the ship's crew and the harbour team for managing the situation and getting the ship safely alongside again.'
Deanne Shallcross, CEO of Whitehaven Harbour Commissioners, said: 'My understanding is conditions do look favourable at 4pm. But often you're never really certain until a split second before. I'm sure there'll be careful assessments and further discussions ahead of that, though.'
The Galeon Andalucia attracted tens of thousands of people to Whitehaven Harbour over the weekend and organisers said the visit had brought 'significant economic benefit' to the town.
It was coordinated by deputy lieutenant Gerard Richardson in partnership with Sellafield, Amentum, Whitehaven Town Council, Whitehaven Harbour Commissioners and Marina Projects Whitehaven.

Edinburgh community share airport 'birdstrike' fears over feckless fly tipping
An Edinburgh community has expressed their dismay after a 'travelling community' trashed a historical site with flytipped waste. Newbridge locals have been working alongside politicians and Edinburgh council to try to tackle the issue after a group decided to camp at Huly Hill Cairn which is a protected space. The standing stones in the area are believed to date back as far as 3,000 years which has led to the local authority fitting concrete blocks to try to stop the 'travellers' from returning. A Newbridge Resident Association member, who claimed human waste was also found at the site, shared their concerns over the issue of flytipping and even claimed seagulls were causing a nuisance to landing planes at Edinburgh Airport. 'The reason villagers were up in arms was because the travelling community decided to camp on a protected 3000 year old Historical Monument with standing stones,' he said. 'We had a very well attended public meeting in the local bowling club and three local councillors and Christine Jardine were present and they all seemed to understand our concerns. We then had concerns about seagulls and rats congregating in the area looking for food waste left behind. 'We had to contact Edinburgh Airport as the seagulls were flying directly in the flight path of landing aircraft. They sent representatives along to the area and confirmed it was a concern. 'The council laid large concrete blocks on a hopefully temporary basis to the entrances to the monument in the hope we do not get further encampments.' Transport and Environment Convener, Councillor Stephen Jenkinson said: 'We cleared any illegally dumped waste from the site that would attract seagulls immediately when we were alerted to this issue last week. 'We're currently in the process of clearing the rest of the waste and this will be completed as soon as possible.' Edinburgh Airport have been approached for comment.

Air India flight to London aborts takeoff due to technical issue
An Air India flight from Delhi to London was forced to abandon take-off just minutes before it was due to depart on Thursday. The Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner exited the runway due to a suspected technical issue, according to local reports. In a statement to PTI, an airline spokesperson said: 'Flight AI2017, operating from Delhi to London on July 31, returned to the bay due to a suspected technical issue." 'The cockpit crew decided to discontinue the take-off run following standard operating procedures and brought the aircraft back for precautionary checks.' Alternative travel arrangements were made for the passengers, with the airline dispatching another aircraft to fulfil the scheduled flight. Ground staff were also on hand to provide support to passengers. Another Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner, operated by United Airlines, was forced to make an emergency landing after the plane's turbine stopped working earlier this week. This year has seen multiple plane-related incidents making headlines worldwide, including the tragic Air India plane crash in June. Air India has found itself in hot water following the tragedy, with an aviation watchdog finding 51 safety-related faults at the company during its annual audit.
