Your ultimate Indiana State Fair food guide

Axios3 days ago
As you make your 2025 Indiana State Fair plans, be sure to show up hungry.
Why it matters: This year's Taste of the Fair lineup features 40 culinary creations that you need to see to believe and taste to understand.
Driving the news: We had the chance to sample the full menu before opening day to give you the inside scoop on what vendors have been cooking up.
Here is some of what we tried.
🥬 All Vegan Indianapolis Philly from the Black Leaf Vegan food truck
Slices of plant-based meat, sautéed peppers and onions are smothered in a creamy "cheez" sauce on a toasted gluten-free hoagie.
Arika's thought bubble: It's great to have vegan and gluten-free options at the fair. It's even better that they're delicious. While the texture of the plant-based meat is slightly different from your traditional philly cheesesteak, all the flavors worked well together. I would totally order this.
Justin's thought bubble: A little softer than an OG cheesesteak, but I didn't miss the meat at all. Flavorful and filling, I'd actually opt for this over the real thing if I was in the mood for something a little lighter. Big kudos on the "cheez" sauce.
🍹 Brunch Mimosa from Urick Concessions
This isn't your average mimosa. It's served with skewers of a mini sausage breakfast sandwich, fruit kebab, bacon, donut holes and a waffle stick — all inside your glass.
Arika: Once you get to the actual drink, it's a classic (and not too sweet!) mimosa made with bubbly from Indy's Easley Winery.
🍪 Cookie Butter Cold Brew Float from Hooks Drugstore Museum
Vanilla cold brew and ice cream get topped with whipped cream, cookie butter drizzle, cookie crumbles and a cherry.
Arika: 10/10. Why aren't we doing cold brew floats all the time?!
Justin: A top three flavor of the fair for me. Delicious and visually appealing to boot. Expect to see this all over Instagram this summer.
🦞 Lobster Mac and Cheese from Freund Family Foods
Chunks of lobster meat are tossed in garlic butter and folded into homemade cheese sauce.
Arika: I didn't have lobster on my state fair food bingo card but this was super solid.
🥒 Pickle Fried Oreos from the Pickle Barrel
There were fried pickles and there were deep-fried Oreos and now there are pickle fried Oreos. A golden Oreo with a pickle slice placed on top is dipped in batter and fried, topped with dill pickle seasoning and served with a side of ranch.
Arika: This is a crime.
Justin: This is a dream! Eat it all in one bite. The sweetness of the batter, which is similar to what you get on a corn dog, helps the Oreo and pickle pairing make sense. But getting too much of one flavor without all three is a recipe for disaster.
🍍 Pineapple Whip Shake Up from Hi & Mighty
A fair favorite in canned cocktail form, it's slightly effervescent and tastes of pineapple, coconut and summer.
Arika: Another winner from the folks at Hi & Mighty, who produce canned cocktails and spirits from their distillery at the Fairgrounds. This might be my favorite of the shakeup flavors — it's super refreshing and not too sweet, perfect for a hot day at the fair.
Justin: Light and refreshing with a lovely level of carbonation. It's also a nice palate cleanser after eating some of the more extreme flavors on offer at this year's fair.
🧀 The Smoked Gouda'cue from the American Dairy Association
Smoked gouda, sharp cheddar and tangy barbecue sauce get melted between two slices of buttery, golden Texas toast.
Arika: This is what fair food is all about for me. It's indulgent, it's comfort food and it's got a little twist with the barbecue sauce. The Texas toast adds a crunch and holds up well without being too dry. I'll be going back for this bad boy.
🇮🇹 Trio of Italy from Freund Family Foods
A flight of three mini Italian-inspired funnel cakes: tiramisu, Italian wedding cake and cannoli.
Arika: Please share this with friends. They call it a flight of "mini" funnel cakes but each was larger than my hand.
The Italian wedding cake was my favorite, with cream cheese frosting, chopped pecans and shredded coconut. It didn't get soggy like the tiramisu and had some nice texture from the toppings.
Justin: The crispy funnel cake made the cannoli my favorite of the bunch. Close your eyes and it's almost like eating the real thing.
🍯 Hot Honey Beignets from The Bakerman
New Orleans-style beignets with a kick. Topped with the traditional powdered sugar and then drizzled with hot honey.
Arika: This was a miss for me. The beignets fell a little flat and the hot honey had trouble sticking over the powdered sugar, rolling off the sides instead.
🥣 Cinnamon Toast Cookie Butter Pretzel Bites from Wilson Concessions
Soft pretzel bites are covered in cinnamon and sugar then smothered with cookie butter, cream cheese icing and topped off with Cinnamon Toast Crunch cereal.
Arika: I thought this would have too much going on but it was great — the salty pretzel bites played nicely with the sweet toppings and the crunch from the cereal added a welcome texture.
Justin: Cinnamon Toast Crunch is my favorite breakfast cereal, so me falling in love with this was no surprise. Get one ASAP. And if you don't like it, find me at the fair and I'll take your leftovers.
🍔 Yes Cer's Burger from Red Frazier Bison
A bison burger comes stacked with pimento cheese, crunchy potato sticks and tangy horseradish pickles between two thick slices of Texas toast.
Justin: If you're not a Pacers fan, this burger will turn you into one after one bite. The texture is top notch. The potato sticks pack some serious crunch that blends beautifully with the creamy pimento cheese and tender burger. Yes Cer, indeed.
🫐 Blueberry Breakfast Sausage Flapjack from Smokehouse Saloon (Red Frazier)
House-made blueberry breakfast sausage wrapped in a flapjack. Served with fresh fruit, powdered sugar and syrup.
Justin: Like the idea, but not the execution. It was suggested that we fold it up and eat it like a taco, but the flapjack lacked the fluffiness and flexibility to make it work. The sausage, however, was very tasty.
💃🏾 Dirty Dancing Egg Rolls from Taste of Home Catering & Food Truck
Chicken Philly egg rolls dipped in homemade hot honey, lemon pepper buffalo sauce and drizzled with ranch dressing.
Justin: If they turned up the heat on this, this could have been a game-changer. But if you like your buffalo sauce mild, you'll find a lot to like here.
🌶️ Jalapeño Popper Pizza from DG Concessions/Ginocchios Pizza
Pizza with a garlic butter and light marinara base, topped with a mozzarella cheese blend, pepperoni, jalapeño poppers, bacon and a drizzle of ranch dressing.
Justin: Two thumbs way up. The crust had some nice crunch, and the jalapeño poppers were plentiful.
🍋 Passion Fruit Boba Lemonade Shakeup from Indiana Ribeye
Boba pearls provide a remix on the classic lemonade shakeup formula.
Justin: In the running for one of my favorite State Fair drinks this year, and I'm not even a huge boba fan. It's a fun take on a summer staple.
🥒 Pickle Bacon Ranch Pizza from Swains Concessions
Pizza with pickle ranch sauce, mozzarella cheese, bacon and even more pickles.
Justin: I wish I could eat this year-round. A personal highlight, this pizza packs in the pickle without allowing it to overpower the rest of the pie. 10/10, will eat again.
🍫 S'mores Cookie from The Cavity Factory
A graham cracker base with milk chocolate and dark chocolate. Topped with a marshmallow that can be torched.

Jessica Biel Revealed The Fast Food She Doesn't Let Her Kids Eat, And It's A Hot Take

Jessica Biel is all about eating "clean" — so of course, that means some restaurants are naturally off-limits. In an interview with Parade, Jessica said that for her family — which includes sons Silas, 10, and Phineas, 4, with husband Justin Timberlake — one of those places is iconic restaurant chain McDonald's. Related: "I'm like, 'Sorry, guys, I'm not doing it,'" she said of going to McDonald's with her sons. "They don't get McDonald's." Jessica explained that her concern lies in the ingredients. "I just feel like I don't know what's going on with [the] quality of that food," she shared. "It's stuff like that that I'm like, 'No, we're not.' Let's go have a great burger and fries at a fancy place. I'd rather pay more for you to have something fancy than something like that." Jessica insisted she's not "crazy, rigid and strict" — it's just one rule her children have to abide by. "That would be something that, if they asked me for, I would just be like, 'Next! Next place. Next down the line!'" You already know the comments prompted opinion online. Related: Many readers agreed with her. Writing under a People magazine post about Jessica's comments, one person said, "It's so unhealthy. I agree. Has it been in my house, yep. But as I age, nopers." Another person wrote, "Mine too .... I make my own burgers with good quality ingredients...." Related: At the same time, some thought it was a little unfair to her children. "Poor little boys," one person wrote in part, as another person said they're "glad [they] don't live there." Some also felt that Jessica's comments were a bit out of touch, as McDonald's is sometimes the only affordable option for many people. "See here's the thing Jessica, some of us are poor," someone wrote, as another person said her comments reeked of "privilege." Related: "Ok millionaire.. thanks for sharing," commented another. While someone else said, "'Kim, there's people that are dying.'" Tell me your stance in the comments. Also in Celebrity: Also in Celebrity: Also in Celebrity: Solve the daily Crossword

Katy Perry And Justin Trudeau's Relationship: Reports

There's a new report about Katy Perry and Justin Trudeau. The two made headlines earlier this week for being photographed grabbing dinner together at a Montreal restaurant. The Canadian ex-prime minister was then seen singing along in the crowd at Katy's Lifetimes tour. Earlier this year, reports emerged that Katy had split from fiancé Orlando Bloom after nine years together. Similarly, Justin was married to Sophie Grégoire Trudeau for 18 years until their separation in 2023. A source now told People that Katy and Justin "are interested in each other, but it will take a while to see where this goes." 'She is traveling around the world, and he is figuring out his life now that he is no longer prime minister of Canada, but there is an attraction. They have a lot in common," the source continued, listing "music" and being "idealists." Both Katy and Justin also have children; Katy has a daughter and Justin has three kids. 'Their own personal responsibilities could make this relationship move slower than it would, but there are ways to see the other and still fulfill their parenting responsibilities,' the source added. Another source further said, '[The] timing seems good for them, although a romance is in very early stages." I suppose only time will tell...

We tried 12 wild Indiana State Fair dishes and ranked them from worst to best

Every year, our IndyStar tasting team is more than happy to provide the important reader service of testing a variety of Indiana State Fair foods and telling you exactly what we think of them with no holds barred. This year, we sweat our way from one end of the fair to the other, sampling a bunch of new dishes and a few that we thought were just downright wild. Find our takes below, ranked from worst (one star) to best (five stars). We hope these insights help you make the best possible investment with your fair dollars. Freund Family Foods Gourmet Funnel Cakes. Across from Corteva Coliseum. $18. IndyStar taster rating:⭐ (1 star) Given my Italian heritage, I really wanted to enjoy this sampling of three famous flavors: Italian wedding cake, tiramisu and cannoli. But unfortunately, neither the cannoli nor tiramisu sections contained any oomph on the front end, and aftertastes were lacking as well. — Domenica Bongiovanni Indiana ribeye truck near the fair Midway. $12. IndyStar taster rating: ⭐⭐ (2 stars) This is not a drink. This is a tug-of-war battle between you and your little sibling. One sip in, you know it's too much sugar, you hand it over to them, but also, you're like, 'Wait, come back, I want it.' It's juicy, it's poppy (but only from the boba), and the flavor screams summer. That said, if you don't shake it around hard, you're just slurping syrup at the bottom like a hummingbird on a Red Bull bender. Sip with caution. And share with a sugar goblin you trust. — Sam Habashy Sun King Brewing in the Taproom across from the Indiana Farmers Coliseum. $12 for 16 ounces. IndyStar taster rating: ⭐⭐ (2 stars) Sun King's cotton candy ale didn't quite do for me what last year's pickle beer did, but that probably says more about me than the drink itself. This take on the classic state fair confection is surprisingly refreshing, with an ambiguously fruity taste that isn't as cloyingly sweet as the beer's frightening shade of teal might suggest. Alas, the opposing flavors just don't mesh as well as you'd hope, which may simply be the result of infusing a drink only consumed legally by people over 21 years old with a food eaten almost exclusively by people under the age of 10. — Bradley Hohulin Jamaican Breeze. Next to the Department of Natural Resources building near the main entrance. $12. IndyStar taster rating: ⭐⭐ ½ (2.5 stars) I was hoping for a trip to flavor town with this one, but sadly, it didn't deliver. The best way to describe the dish? Tame. The jerk sauce had a faint sweetness but lacked the bold, spice-rich taste you'd expect. The cheese was barely noticeable, leaving the fries feeling more like a missed opportunity than a standout snack. At $12, it's hard to justify the price for something so underwhelming. If you're craving bold Caribbean flavors, you might want to keep looking. — Ethan Hylton Dairy Bar. Across from Corteva Coliseum. $5. IndyStar taster rating: ⭐⭐⭐½ (3.5 stars) The barbecue sauce reminds me somewhat of Sweet Baby Ray's, which is a little too sweet for my Kansas City-groomed tastebuds. But the salty, creamy gouda and the slices of perfectly buttered and toasted bread make up for the slight sugar overreach. — Domenica Bongiovanni Black Leaf Vegan Food Truck. Across from Pioneer Village. $17. IndyStar taster rating: ⭐⭐⭐½ (3.5 stars) The plant-based "meat" is coated in a vegan "cheez" sauce that has a fruitiness reminiscent of the sticky-sweet coating on your favorite childhood mall Chinese chicken. The protein and peppers were cradled in a hoagie with enough fluff and chewiness to meet all of my expectations. Overall, this sandwich is a pleasant diversion from the deep-fried cheesy flavors that populate so much of the fair. — Domenica Bongiovanni Urick Concessions. Inside the Agriculture and Horticulture building. $20. IndyStar taster rating: ⭐⭐⭐½ (3.5 stars) If you're looking to escape the summer heat with a refreshing adult beverage, the brunch mimosa might be for you. Light, crisp and not overly sweet, the mimosa was a pleasant surprise, especially with white wine replacing the usual champagne. That twist added a subtle depth that worked well. However, at $20, I expected more from the accompanying fruits, waffles and donuts. They looked promising but didn't quite deliver on flavor. Overall, it's a fun treat if you're in the mood for something light and boozy, but the price-to-quality ratio holds it back. — Ethan Hylton Pickle barrel concession right when you enter by the Hoosier Free Stage lottery. $12. IndyStar taster rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐ (4 stars) This is what happens when your taste buds and your inner feral child make a pact. It's giving "a dare gone too far but also… kinda genius?" It tastes like a sleepover where no one's mom is supervising and someone goes, 'Let's mix everything in the pantry!' I felt nine years old and unhinged in the best way while eating this salty, sweet and weirdly nostalgic confection. I double-dog dare you to eat the whole thing without questioning your life choices — unlike my co-workers, who did not appreciate the admittedly odd flavor palate. — Sam Habashy Hook's Drugstore Museum by the Indiana Arts Building near Gate 1. $9. IndyStar taster rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐ (4 stars) A crisp cup of vanilla cold brew receives vanilla ice cream, whipped cream, Biscoff cookie butter and Biscoff crumbles, all topped with a maraschino cherry. The concoction looks untenably sweet, but it's a far cry from the massive syrup-spiked drive-thru iced coffees that makes you feel like you're having a panic attack after three sips. Aside from some slight whipped cream separation, everything comes together very nicely in a lovely mocha-colored swirl. Just know your limits — full-fat dairy and extra-strength coffee make this sweet treat quietly one of the more intestinally challenging offerings at the State Fair, which is saying a lot. — Bradley Hohulin Red Frazier Bison. Across from Pioneer Village. $20. IndyStar taster rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐ (4 Stars) Mind you, this was my first time trying bison, so I was a bit apprehensive going into this, but boy am I glad I tried it. The bison patty was cooked well and surprisingly juicy. What really stood out, though, was the Texas toast: crunchy, flavorful, and perfect for soaking up all those savory juices. I did discover that pimento cheese isn't my thing, but don't let that stop you — it's a solid burger overall. If you're feeling hangry and want a hearty, satisfying option, this is a safe bet. The $20 price tag is a little steep, but the quality makes it worth considering. — Ethan Hylton J&J A Taste of Home along the northwest side of the West Pavilion. $17 for two rolls. IndyStar taster rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐½ (4.5 stars) Following up last year's confoundingly delicious spaghetti and meat sauce egg rolls, J&J presents my favorite bite of the fair with a 4-inch payload of chopped chicken and cheese that is wrapped and fried, doused in a fire-orange blend of hot honey, lemon pepper and buffalo sauce and drizzled with ranch dressing. Combining the trademark flavors of Philadelphia, Atlanta, upstate New York and the Midwest feels almost heretical yet totally works here. While I admittedly miss the crispness of a traditional egg roll, the tang and heat of the sauces is a worthy trade-off, and I suppose it wouldn't be in the spirit of a Philly cheesesteak if the dish were even remotely tidy. — Bradley Hohulin Wilson concessions truck. By the agriculture building. $12. IndyStar taster rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐½ (4.5 stars) Bites? They meant it. These are the perfect portion sizes that fit in your mouth with no hassle. It's coated in just enough cinnamon sugar, but it's not overpowering. And the cereal is quite the throwback as I hadn't had it in years. The cookie butter drizzle is the main character. It adds a subtle softness to contrast the crunch. The bites were gone in minutes, and I was left wanting just one more. — Sam Habashy More: Taste of the Fair: Indiana State Fair announces new foods for 2025 Contact dining reporter Bradley Hohulin at bhohulin@ You can follow him on Twitter/X @BradleyHohulin and stay up to date with Indy dining news by signing up for the Indylicious newsletter.
