Rahul Gandhi seeks time to reply on plea demanding book quoted by him for ‘defaming' Savarkar
Gandhi is likely to submit his 'say' through his lawyer Milind Pawar to special judge Amol Shinde of the MP/MLA court in Pune, during the next hearing of the defamation case scheduled on July 3.
Satyaki Savarkar had filed the defamation complaint against Gandhi for his alleged objectionable remarks against freedom fighter and Hindutva ideologue V D Savarkar, during a speech in London on March 5, 2023.
Satyaki is the grandnephew of V D Savarkar. According to Satyaki, Gandhi had said in his speech that Savarkar wrote a book in which he stated that he and five to six of his friends beat up a Muslim and were 'delighted' about it. Satyaki said V D Savarkar had not written any such book as claimed by Gandhi, nor has such an incident ever happened.
Earlier, Rahul's lawyer Milind Pawar had filed an application before the court seeking an English translation of the book 'Mazi Janmathep' authored by V D Savarkar, another book 'Hindutva' also authored by him, and the family tree of Satyaki Savarkar. Satyaki's lawyer Sangram Kolhatkar provided the same to advocate Pawar in the court.
Last month, Satyaki filed an application before the court through advocate Kolhatkar, seeking directions for Gandhi to produce the book allegedly written by V D Savarkar, which was cited by him in his alleged defamatory statement. 'The above-mentioned book is necessary for a fair trial. Previously, this court had granted permission to the accused to obtain the book titled 'Hindutva' written by Veer Savarkar from the complainant. Hence, on the same grounds and principles, the complainant too should be granted the same relief in the interest of justice and fair trial,' the application stated.
The court had asked advocate Pawar to file a 'say' on this application on behalf of Gandhi. But on Thursday, Pawar filed another application seeking more time for filing the 'say'. Pawar submitted in his plea that Gandhi is holding a constitutional post (Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha) and is occupied with official duties and public responsibilities of utmost importance.
It further stated that 'due to certain unavoidable and unforeseen circumstances, the defence is unable to file say/reply on the said application….' Pawar sought reasonable time from the court to file a detailed reply to Satyaki's application. The court allowed Pawar's plea and kept the matter for hearing on July 3.
During the last hearing, the court had rejected an application filed by Gandhi seeking the maternal family tree of Satyaki. Satyaki's mother Himani Ashok Savarkar is the daughter of Gopal Godse, the younger brother of Nathuram Godse, Mahatma Gandhi's assassin.
Rejecting Gandhi's plea, the court had observed that Satyaki is the grandson of one of the brothers of late V D Savarkar and the said case is not related to the family tree of his mother Himani Savarkar.

The money, intended for K-12 education programmes, had been withheld as part of a review announced by the White House. States say a total of $6.8 billion in funding was affected, with $1.3 billion already released last week. In a statement sent by email, Madi Biedermann, a senior official at the US Department of Education, said, 'The Office of Management and Budget has completed its review … and has directed the Department to release all formula funds.' 'The agency will begin dispersing funds to states next week,' she added. No details of the review findings were provided. A senior Trump administration official told Reuters that some 'guardrails' would be attached to how the funds are used, but did not give specifics. The Washington Post first reported the release of the $5 billion. Earlier in July, the Trump administration said it had found indications that the money was being misused to support what it called a 'radical leftwing agenda.' Telangana led way in caste census, BJP trying to derail BC empowerment: Ponnam Prabhakar
New Delhi/Hyderabad, July 25 (UNI) Telangana Transport and BC Welfare Minister Ponnam Prabhakar on Friday said the Congress government in Telangana has taken decisive steps to implement a caste census despite not being in power at the Centre, and condemned BJP leaders for attempting to undermine the process. Speaking to the media at Telangana Bhavan in New Delhi after a meeting with AICC President Mallikarjun Kharge and senior leader Rahul Gandhi, Prabhakar said Rahul Gandhi had emphasised the need for a caste census during the Bharat Jodo Yatra and promised to implement it if voted to power. Telangana, he said, took the lead by initiating the caste census on February 4, 2024. Despite delays due to the Lok Sabha elections, the state government successfully completed the enumeration with 3.5 crore people voluntarily participating. The collected data, comprising over 80 crore documents, was digitised, reviewed by a subcommittee, and approved by the state cabinet. The resulting legislation to implement 42 per cent reservation for BCs in education and local bodies was passed and sent to the Governor, and later to the President for approval on April 30, 2025. Prabhakar slammed Union Minister G Kishan Reddy and BJP leaders for opposing the bill and accused them of betraying the Backward Classes. 'What has BJP done more than us for BCs? Instead of supporting this historic move, they are trying to spread misinformation and dilute our efforts,' he said, citing BJP's past opposition to the Mandal Commission and social justice policies. He also questioned why BJP, while claiming to support BCs, failed to appoint a BC as the Leader of the Opposition in Telangana or maintain BC leadership in their own party. 'Our Congress party stands as the brand ambassador of social justice. We are not blaming any party, but facts must be examined,' he said. He urged BJP leaders to stop creating divisions and instead support the caste census and reservations for BCs. 'This is not just about Telangana, but a nationwide movement to ensure social justice,' he said, reiterating the Congress' commitment to fight for the rights of weaker sections.
