Debenhams shoppers rush to grab £78 watch that is 'mistaken for Rolex' before Father's Day

Daily Record03-06-2025
'Excellent looking watch! Great shine, perfect case size and good weight.'
With Father's Day just around the corner, a watch can be a quality gift to give your loved ones that is both practical and heartfelt. What's better is that Debenhams is holding a massive sale on many popular timepieces so you won't need to break the bank.
One issue that can arise when buying a watch is that the style may be perfect, but your preferred colour is not part of the advertised selection. If this is a common issue shoppers encounter, we have found a watch that has six different colourways available.
The STÜHRLING Original Lineage Classic 42mm Quartz Watch normally retails for £720, but shoppers can snatch it up for £78.75 after a massive 89 per cent discount.
Designed with a sleek polish and an ultra-thin profile, the Lineage watch is sure to look elegant for a formal event as well as become a go to timepiece for everyday wear. Boasting luminous stick hands and hour markers, these are perfectly framed by a striking fixed coin edge bezel.
Powered by a Miyota 2315 Japanese quartz movement, this watch will consistently keep its wearer on time no matter the occasion. Finished off with a 20mm stainless steel link bracelet, this timepiece is said to provide "sharp looks and supreme comfort".
As mentioned, this watch is available in six colourways on the Debenhams website. However, shoppers will need to be quick to grab their favourite as some of the designs are noted as having limited stock left. Customers can choose silver, two-tone or a rose gold bracelet and either a white, black or blue dial.

Another watch available in the sale is the STÜHRLING Original Ascot Quartz 38mm Classic Watch which features a leather strap. Normally retailing for £400, shoppers can now grab this elegant black and rose gold watch for £60 after a 85 per cent reduction.
Alternatively, H. Samuel has reduced the price of the Citizen Men's Blue Chronograph Watch. Usually priced at £250, shoppers can now get this stunning silver and blue watch for half the price at £125 just in time of Father's Day.
However, many shoppers have been interested in the Lineage Watch, which has an array of positive reviews from delighted shoppers on both the Debenhams and Stuhrling websites.
One happy watch lover said: "This a very stylish watch and is great for dress and casual. A dead ringer for that expensive watch that begins with an 'R', but I don't need to mortgage my home to own it!"
Another shopper agreed, writing: "The watch looks amazing, the first time wearing it, I had so many compliments and multiple people asking is that a Rolex; it just kept shining on your wrist during the whole meeting. Great purchase."
However, a third shopper wasn't pleased with the size of the watch. They said: "The watch is fine but the strap is VERY large. My husband is 6'1" and we had to have a jeweler take a full inch out of it which was a nuisance."
Fashion deal of the week
In need of new trainers, but don't want to pay Skechers prices.
Then these STQ Women's Slip-On Trainers are said to be "much better" than the famed brand. Even better, they are currently priced from just £30.99 on Amazon.
With their slip-on style design and ultra-breathable mesh material, these trainers are said to be a fuss-free option for anyone who spends long periods of time on their feet, alongside anyone who suffers from foot pain issues such as plantar fasciitis.
The flexible knitted material features an elastic cuff, making them easy to pop on and take off, while the wide fit fabric has been designed to make it feel like you are wearing nothing on your feet.
Crafted with over 1,000 ventilation holes, they ensure that feet don't get to sweaty during wear, while the memory foam insole provides good arch support, making it feel "like walking on air".
Available to buy in sizes three through to eight, shoppers can select from eight colours including black, grey and pink. However, it's worth noting that the £30.99 price-tag is available on the black colourway.
With the STQ Trainers posing the cheapest price-tag, shoppers might be happy to hear that they have earned a 4.4 rating based on over 5,000 Amazon reviews that suggest they are "light as a feather" and "really comfortable".
One delighted shopper said: "Super lightweight, comfortable and a fab colour pink. Much better all round than the Skechers I bought at four times the price! Your feet will love these."
Whereas, another reviewer wasn't happy with the quality: "It's a nice looking watch but unfortunately it doesn't feel as good as it looks, I'd say it feels like a Seconda"
Despite this, a five-star reviewer commented: "Excellent looking watch! Great shine, perfect case size and good weight. Great watch for the price!!!"
With a further shopper praising: "I have a Stuhrling watch for many years and love it so I decided to buy one for my husband as a surprise and he loves it. He has worn it since the day he received. I would buy again."

Poignant and beautifully written: Scottish author's tale of friendship

It begins at Oxford in 2004, with two students who are barely on nodding terms with each other. James Drayton is a natural problem-solver, hyper-focused, intensely practical, but with negligible social skills. Convinced he's destined for great things, he powers through his PPE degree only to wind up working in management consultancy, which feels dull and anti-climactic after all that heroic striving. Drayton and Mackenzie is rich in character (Image: Swift) Roland Mackenzie lacks James's drive. He finds it harder to commit himself, pursuing his dreams but then sabotaging them with his inability to put in the necessary effort. He has a passion for Japanese, but his plan to become a teacher in Japan fizzles out after he is posted to India instead. His successful attempt to secure an interview with a genuine Yakuza degenerates into an embarrassing fiasco because he's neglected to carry out any preparation for it. They're such contrasting personalities that it's hard to imagine them becoming friends – until James gets an idea for a business venture that Roland could be useful for. It's the beginning of an awkward friendship that, as the years go by, becomes almost like a marriage. Roland is much more of a people person, able to win over investors and inspire employees when James's grand mission statements flounder. He becomes a partner in James's next big project: harnessing tidal energy (distinct from wave energy) from the seas around Orkney to generate power and, in the long run, to actually change the world. Read more For two relatively inexperienced businessmen, it's a challenge of almost inhuman magnitude. Starritt, though, is something of an entrepreneurial guru (he writes columns for the World Economic Forum) and shows, step by step, how they build a multi-million-pound enterprise from scratch, predicting all the logistical, technical, financial and political obstacles that could stand in their way. His passion for detail suggests that the author is not unlike James Drayton in his capacity to absorb information and focus on problems with a laser-like intensity. His readers will end up learning more about marine engineering, large-scale projects and international finance from this novel than they bargained for. But what will keep them reading is how Starritt, in beautifully lucid prose, has seamlessly connected it all to the growth of his two central characters and the nuanced relationship between them, which runs from blokeish teasing, mutual irritation and smouldering grievance to unshakeable trust, tenderness and self-sacrifice. It's wonderfully done, and there's an added poignancy from their gradual realisation that the choices they made in their twenties, swept up by the notion of building a better world, have had the effect of narrowing the scope of their lives, closing off other paths they could have taken and, consequently, the people they could have been. An affecting tale of friendship and loyalty, Drayton and Mackenzie also makes us reflect on the choices that have defined us.

Shanghai Me

If you want to get a sense of the sort of person you'll see at Shanghai Me, the new Chinese-Japanese fusion restaurant on the top floor of the London Hilton on Park Lane, then consider this: there was a 12-year-old boy behind me wearing a Maison Margiela t-shirt. It will come as no surprise that this high rise Mayfair restaurant is chock-a-block with Loro Piana-clad, facially reconstructed wealthy elite whose means is of questionable provenance. If they get bored with Sexy Fish or Novikov or the ironically charred embers of Chiltern Firehouse, they can come here. In fact, they have come here, because the 28th floor is full on a Wednesday night a mere week after opening. There was a desire to be cynical about Shanghai Me. But it's actually fun Shanghai Me has two other outposts in Doha and Dubai, with another set to open in Monaco. I'm not sure how I feel about our beautiful capital being lumped in with these gaudy Gomorrahs but perhaps that's just where we are. The interiors are surprisingly tasteful, art deco everything and 1990s Wall Street expressionist paintings on the wall. The menu at Shanghai Me is extensive and unsurprising. All the stars are here; wagyu dim sum, cod and miso, black truffle yellowtail. At their suggestion we order a couple of dim sum, a couple of starters, a smattering of mains. First out is the tuna tataki, lightly dressed in ponzu with mini shiso leaves, and it's as good as anything you'll get in a high end omakase. Chicken xiao long bao is soft and oozing with salty, peppery broth, and wagyu beef and shiitake mushroom fried dumplings taste, slightly incongruously, like the best steak and ale pie you've ever had, with a touch of sticky red Chinese ribs. Less good was the shrimp tempura, which was drenched in an admittedly good and elevated, sweet chilli sauce, thus saturating what should be crunchy, softly fried prawns. When you order tempura you want tempura, you know? An ensemble of mains included braised beef which, while a little dry, was accompanied by a viscous and tangy sukiyaki sauce. The cod with miso seemed a no-brainer in a place like this, and while it was immaculately cooked, the miso dip took on a sweetness that overbore the fish. Just the lemon it was served with would have been more than fine. But the broccoli in oyster sauce? The prawn fried rice? Sensational. Familiar dishes that have been seasoned so deftly, and prepared so delicately and with such care that you forget about the teething issues. And that's what they feel like here: teething issues. Our dessert of a strangely deconstructed matcha tiramisu, which resembled almost nothing of an actual tiramisu, but still hits with the sugary force of a spring-loaded boxing glove, came with an erroneous 'Happy Birthday' on-plate chocolate calligraphy. It was sweet in both senses of the word. There was a desire to be cynical about Shanghai Me. But it's actually fun. The dishes are enjoyable, the people watching is second to none, the view is stunning, the mainly Italian serving staff were jovial and had character. If you're going for a silly, opulent date night to rub shoulders with London's anonymous elite, you could do a hell of a lot worse than this. The vibe Plush Asian fusion in an actual Ivory Tower. The food All-of-the-above Chinese food, elevated and carefully done. The drink They have a good selection of both baiju and sake, as well as cocktails tailored to your zodiac sign. And, shockingly for Mayfair, you can get a bottle of wine here for £40.
