Guwahati: A day after the Indore tourist Raja Raghuvanshi murder case was solved by the Meghalaya Police, silent demonstrations were held in Shillong and Sohra, with residents emphasising that while the incident was tragic, it should not define the northeastern state.
Members of the Hynniewtrep Youth Council (HYC), alongside civilians, organised a silent protest at Police Bazar in Shillong on Tuesday, condemning the killing of Raja Raghuvanshi. Holding placards and maintaining silence, protesters expressed their opposition to the violent act, which has drawn nationwide attention and sparked discussions about tourist safety in Meghalaya.
HYC president Roykupar Synrem said Meghalaya is known for its peace and welcoming nature, remarking, "This incident is tragic, but it should not define our state."
He emphasised the need for the swift implementation of the Inner Line Permit (ILP) system to enhance visitor monitoring and regulation.
The demonstration reflected widespread concern among residents and community organisations about the potential harm to Meghalaya's reputation. While demanding justice, protesters insisted that this isolated incident should not overshadow the state's safety record, cultural heritage, and values.
Meanwhile, in Sohra, residents organised a peaceful march on Tuesday to highlight their longstanding tradition of hospitality and security. Demonstrators carried placards with messages such as "Stop blaming the people of Sohra without any evidence", "Tourists are always a part of our extended family", "Every tourist is welcome to Sohra", "Don't fall prey to fake narratives", and "Come and enjoy the beauty of Sohra".
On Sunday night, police arrested four suspects from Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh, while Sonam, who went untraced since May 23.

Meghalaya's Latest Move For Tourists Safety After Honeymoon Murder

Guwahati: Meghalaya has made it mandatory for all tourist accommodations to register with the state tourism department. The latest ruling applies to all hotels, guest houses, homestays, lodges, inns and bed-and-breakfast establishments, said the Meghalaya Tourism Department. This comes in the wake of 'honeymoon murder' - where Raja Raghuvanshi, an Indore-based businessman, was killed by his wife during their honeymoon in Meghalaya. The couple was reported missing within three days of their visit to Meghalaya. Later, Raja's dead body was found in a gorge, but his wife, Sonam, was still missing until she surrendered to the Uttar Pradesh police and confessed to the crime. Sonam's boyfriend, Raj, and his three friends helped orchestrate the murder. What came to be known as the honeymoon murder raised serious concerns about safety among tourists. Ever since then, the government has been taking measures to clear all apprehensions. The mandatory online registration of all accommodations will involve daily digital reporting of guest check-ins and check-outs. This includes critical details such as the number of visitors, their gender, place of origin (state or country), and identity verification (ID proof, visa details, and C-form uploads for foreign nationals). All accommodation providers are also required to obtain a no-objection certificate (NOC) from both the district administration and district police before operating in the state. For the same, the state government has launched an online portal and a mobile application. The non-compliance with the regulation will result in legal action. Last month, Meghalaya made it mandatory for tourists to hire authorised and recognised guides while trekking in the East Khasi Hills district for safety. The state government has also banned renting out private vehicles -- both two-wheelers and four-wheelers -- for commercial purposes. A public notice issued by the Office of the Commissioner of Transport dated June 13, 2025, clarified that Meghalaya has not implemented the Rent-a-Motorcycle or Rent-a-Cab schemes. Therefore, no individual or agency is legally authorised to offer private vehicles for hire in the state.

Meghalaya makes guides mandatory for trekking in East Khasi Hills after tourist deaths

GUWAHATI: Meghalaya has made it mandatory for tourists to hire licenced guides for trekking and other outdoor activities in the East Khasi Hills district. The directive comes on the heels of the death of a Hungarian national Puskás Zsolt and the murder of Indore businessman Raja Raghuvanshi, both in the Sohra (Cherrapunji) area of the district. East Khasi Hills District Magistrate and Chairperson of the District Tourism Promotion Society, Rosetta Mary Kurbah issued the directive in the interest of public safety. Kurbah said mandatory guide services would help prevent tourists from getting lost, injured, or exposed to criminal activities in remote and isolated areas. She said the order would be strictly enforced. The violators would face penalties or be denied access to trekking routes, she added. The administration plans to effectively implement the directive by deploying more trained guides and working with local communities. The dEcomposed body of the Hungarian national was retrieved on April 11, days after he was reported missing. The police suspected that he died after falling from a steep slope.

Mandatory guide rule for treks in Sohra following tourist deaths

The East Khasi Hills district administration in Meghalaya has made it compulsory for all visitors to avail the services of licensed tourist guides for outdoor activities, including treks, in the Sohra region. The directive, issued over a month after the death of Indore-based businessman Raja Raghuvanshi during his honeymoon trip on May 23, seeks to improve tourist safety in the area. Mr. Raghuvanshi was allegedly murdered by his wife and her associates. A month earlier, a Hungarian national, Puskás Zsolt, died during a solo trek in the Sohra-Shella area in April. 'In view of safety reasons, it is now mandatory for all tourists to take the services of a registered tourist guide, while undertaking treks and outdoor activities in the area,' East Khasi Hills Deputy Commissioner Rosetta M. Kurbah stated in an order issued on July 1. Ms. Kurbah, who also chairs the District Tourism Promotion Society, said the decision is intended not only to ensure the safety of visitors but also to prevent incidents such as tourists getting lost, injured, or being susceptible to criminal acts in isolated areas. She added that violators may face penalties or be denied access to trekking routes. To ensure the effective implementation of the directive, the district administration plans to deploy additional trained guides and work closely with local communities. The Sohra region, also known as Cherrapunjee, is one of the most frequented tourist destinations in Meghalaya. It is known for its scenic trekking trails, waterfalls, root bridges - including the famous double-decker bridge -caves, and rolling meadows.
