Mint3 days ago
ITR 2025: The deadline to file the income tax return (ITR) is fast approaching, as the government has set September 15, 2025, as the last date for submission. If you are busy filing your income tax return, make sure you take all necessary precautions, including downloading necessary documents, studying them carefully, checking their authenticity and filing the return before the deadline.
1. Select your tax regime: First, you need to carefully select your income tax regime. You may want to use an income tax calculator to compare the tax computed under both regimes before you take the final call.
2. Download documents: You need to download AIS and Form 26AS and check the actual TDS / TCS / tax paid. If you happen to find any discrepancy, you must reconcile it with the employer/ tax deductor/ bank.
3. Study the documents: Now you can compile and carefully study the documents to be referred to when filing your ITR. These include documents such as bank statement/ passbook, interest certificates, receipts to claim exemptions or deductions, Form 16, Form 26AS (Annual Information Statement), investment proofs, etc.
4. Check authenticity: Now, you need to make sure that the other salient details, including PAN, permanent address, contact details, and bank account details, are correct in the pre-filled data.
5. Choose the correct form: It is also important to identify the correct return form for you, from ITR-1 to ITR-7.
Read this Livemint article to check which ITR form will be applicable.
6. Provide details: Make sure you provide all the details in the return, such as total income, deductions (if any), interest (if any), taxes paid / collected (if any), etc. It is important to make sure that no documents are attached along with ITR-1.
7. Before deadline: E-file the income return on or before the due date, which is September 15, 2025. Late returns have adverse consequences, including late filing fees, losses not being carried forward, and deductions and exemptions not being available.
8. E-verify the return: After e-filing the return, make sure to e-verify it. If you want to manually verify your return, send the signed physical copy of ITR-V Acknowledgement (by speed post) within the appropriate timelines of filing the return to Centralised Processing Centre, Income Tax Department, Bengaluru 560500 (Karnataka).

IT Dept surveys Nuvama Wealth Management over links with Jane Street

Income Tax Department conducted a survey at various offices of Nuvama Wealth Management Ltd, linked to Jane Street's market manipulation on July 31, 2025, according to sources. Nuvama in its exchange filing said that it was fully co-operating with the income tax department in the search. The wealth management firm was reportedly trading in India for Jane Street. Queries sent through email to Jane Street were unanswered till press time. 'The Income Tax Department is conducting a survey today under Section 133A of the Income Tax Act, 1961, at the Company's Registered office. The Company is extending full co-operation with the authorities and sharing requisite information…The survey is yet to be concluded. The Company will make requisite disclosures, if any, to the Stock Exchanges under SEBI (Listing Obligations and Disclosure Requirements) Regulations, 2015 ('Listing Regulations'). The Company continues to operate business as usual,' Nuvama said in its exchange filing. Further they confirmed that they were compliant with the disclosure norms for Listing regulation. The grounds of the searches were not known and Nuvama maintained that the survey had not concluded. Nuvama's share closed 2.5% to ₹7225 a share reacting to the news. SEBI had found Jane Street in violation of FPI regulations among others allegedly manipulating the derivative market. The American company which has its subsidiaries in India was banned from operating in the securities market unless the profit of over ₹4800 crore were transferred to SEBI in an escrow account, according to SEBI's interim order. Following this, Jane Street paid this and asked that the curbs be lifted adding that it had all rights to its disposal. SEBI had then allowed the company to resume trading as it had complied with the interim order.

US higher education faces $7 billion hit as international commencements set to drop by 40% this September

US may lose 150,000 international students as visa delays threaten September commencements. (AI Image) A new analysis forecasts a significant downturn in international student commencements in the US this fall, with projected declines of 30% to 40% for September 2025. The data, jointly produced by NAFSA and research consultancy JB International, highlights a potential loss of up to 150,000 international students, driven largely by visa processing backlogs during the peak May–August window. The projected decline would translate into a 15% reduction in international enrolments for the 2025/26 academic year compared to the previous year. According to the NAFSA/JB International study, this would have an estimated economic impact of US$7 billion and affect over 60,000 jobs across the country. Visa delays and travel restrictions behind enrolment decline The study attributes the projected decline to four primary factors: the suspension of student visa interviews from May 27 through June 18, limited visa appointment availability after that suspension was lifted, a softening trend in visa issuance through early 2025, and travel restrictions impacting multiple sending markets. As per data reported by the ICEF, F-1 visa issuance declined by 12% from January through April 2025 compared to the same period in 2024. The drop was more severe in May 2025, when F-1 issuances fell by 22%. JB International CEO Jason Baumgartner noted that "we might be looking at as much as an 80–90% decline in visa issuance for the month of June,' due to the pause and delays in restoring full processing. NAFSA CEO Fanta Aw stated that, 'The issue doesn't seem to be one of capacity at US embassies, because we see high volumes of visas [across all categories] issued,' as quoted by the ICEF. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Citizens Advice: 3M Brits Miss £520 for Flight Delays – Are You Eligible? Travel bans affecting major sending countries The report also cited new US travel policies as a contributing factor. On June 4, the US administration implemented a full travel ban for 12 countries and a partial ban on citizens from another seven. Additionally, the government indicated it was considering similar restrictions on travelers from 36 more countries, including key student markets in Africa. NAFSA also flagged limited appointment availability in countries such as India, China, Nigeria, and Japan, all of which represent major sources of international students for US institutions. In addition, the association has urged that these categories be exempted from travel bans, while maintaining standard security vetting procedures. On July 24, 15 Members of Congress issued a letter to Secretary of State Marco Rubio, requesting clarification on what the department is doing to resolve visa backlogs, particularly in India. 'We are dismayed at the possibility that many of these bright young individuals may be blocked... from continuing their education and research in the United States,' the letter states, as reported by the ICEF.
