Rangers defender Max Aarons believes the club's new look squad are already showing they have what it takes to compete for the big trophies this season following their gritty win over Panathinaikos in the Champions League second qualifying round. Russell Martin's squad went into the game in Athens with a two goal lead following their 2-0 first leg victory at Ibrox last week, but were forced to dig deep in the Greek capital as the home side put pressure on the Rangers defence in sweltering heat. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad The Gers stuck to their task though, and ground out a 1-1 draw thanks to a fine strike from substitute Djeidi Gassama, who equalised for Rangers just seven minutes after Filip Đuričić's had opened the scoring for the home side in the 53rd minute. The 3-1 aggregate victory sets up a Champions League third qualifying round clash with Viktoria Plzeň at Ibrox next week, however, Aarons is convinced the early season tests in Europe will also be of huge benefit to Rangers domestically, as they look to wrestle the Scottish Premiership title from Celtic this season. 'Coming here for the second leg, against a team at the top of their league is always going to extremely difficult. We knew what we were coming into tonight, and a different game to how it was at Ibrox. We had to grind it out. It's so early on in our time here, we've had five weeks with this manager and new players. 'It is definitely a test, and we've come through it. We grew into the first leg, and we grew into the game in this one as well. It is a great test for us, seeing this group can dig in to win, leagues, cup competition - anything - and get as far as you can. You look to the side and know we are going to battle, which is really good to see. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad 'These are the nights you want to be a part of, through to the next round and it is a massive step for this group. It gives us confidence going into the league. This is a real step for the squad especially after being together for just five weeks.' Aarons, who joined on loan from AFC Bournemouth last month, also reserved praise on fellow new signing Gassama, after the French winger's vital goal off the bench. The ex-Sheffield Wednesday man has enjoyed a blistering start to his Rangers career, with two goals in his first two appearances, and Aarons has called on the under-20 international to take his explosive start into their league season, which begins with a visit to Motherwell this Saturday.

The Watford defender has two years left on his current deal at Vicarage Road, having joined the second tier club from Hibs in 2022, but has been deemed surplus to requirements by the Hornets after his underwhelming loan spell at Preston North End in the second-half a last season. According to Sky Sports, the 26-year-old is now closing in on a move to the BMO Stadium this summer, with the two clubs said to have agreed a deal worth around £872,000, with a 50% sell-on clause inserted into the deal by Watford. According to reports, the Hoops boss has 'taken a shine' to the 20-year-old Spanish midfielder, who spent last season on loan with Las Palmas, and is now ready to launch a bid to bring the player to Celtic Park on a loan-to-buy deal. A Spanish youth international, Bajcetic was signed for a fee of £224,000 from Celta Vigo in 2020 as a 16-year-old, but has struggled for first team football at Anfield, making just 22 appearances for the club since his arrival. Elsewhere, the Hoops continue to be foiled in their bid to bring Danish winger Breum to the club, having had a third bid rejected for the 21-year-old earlier this week. The young Dane scored 11 goals and assisted a further six in the Eredivisie last season, and is said to be keen on the move to the Scottish champions, though Celtic appear to have his a stumbling block over their valuation of the youngster. Several reports claim the clubs are too far apart in their valuation of the player, with Celtic 'cautious about overextending their budget' this summer. The 22-year-old is said to be a key target for the Gers, who are thought to be considering a move after he scored seven goals in 35 matches on loan to Sheffield United last season. Currently nursing a knock, reports claim Rak-Sakyi would be 'open' to making the switch to Ibrox, hower, Eagles boss Glasner appears to have poured cold water on the switch, calling on the club's board to ensure no more players are sold this summer. Scotland youth international sparks interest Scotland Under-21 international Marc Leonard will be allowed to leave Birmingham City this summer, despite playing an important role in the Blues' record breaking EFL League One title win last season. The 23-year-old spent four years in the Hearts youth academy as a teenager before being snapped up by Brighton in 2021. He struggled to break into the Seagulls first team though, and spent two years on loan at Northampton Town, winning the club's player of the year award. He went on to feature 35 times, helping the Midlands club rack up 111 points in the English third-tier. However, despite his performances last season, Birmingham are said to be 'open' to allowing Leonard to leave this summer, alerting both Huddersfield Town and clubs in the MLS to his availability. Current Hibs forward Kieron Bowie with Marc Leonard during their time at Northampton Town. Dundee United 'explore' move Dundee United head coach Jim Goodwin is mulling over a deal to bring midfielder Allan Campbell back to Tannadice on a 'long-term' basis following the player's short spell at the club last season. According to SportsBoom, Goodwin is 'exploring the possibility' of a permanent deal for the ex-Motherwell man, but is facing serious competition from his former club Millwall. Campbell initially joined Dundee United in January after being released from his contract at Luton Town. Goodwin offered the player a short-term agreement until the end of the 2024/25 season, but did not include an option for extension. However, it is now reported that the Tannadice outfit are 'preparing' a new offer in a bid to convince the 1-cap Scotland international to commit to a longer stay in the topflight. Allan Campbell is being lined up for a return to Dundee United, according to reports. | SNS Group Aberdeen ace 'in talks' Aberdeen winger Vicente Besuijen is edging towards the Pittodrie exit door, with a move to Europe said to be on the horizon. According to reports, the Dons are in discussions with HJK Helsinki over a loan deal for the Dutch winger, with an option to buy the 24-year-old set to be included in the deal. The Antwerp winger has been linked with a move to the Scottish champions since January, and reports in Belgium claimed a move was getting closer as Celtic look to strengthen their attacking options. Brendan Rodgers is in the market for a winger after allowing Nicolas Kuhn to join Como FC earlier this month, with Luis Palma and Marco Tilio due to spend the season on loan to Lech Poznan and Austria Vienna respectively. Swedish international Benjamin Nygren has arrived for a fee of £1.2million, but the Hoops head coach is hoping to strengthen his options further. However, the player's agent Jibril Rekkab has now appeared to confirm there is currently no formal bid submitted for the 24-year-old, telling the Daily Record: 'Michel-Ange is not closed to the idea of joining Celtic, but the club [Celtic] would still have to come forward. No discussions are underway.' Elsewhere, former Celtic youngster Lewis Dobbie has completed a free transfer move to East Kilbride following his release from the club at the end of last season. The 19-year-old scored 13 goals in the Lowland League last season. According to a new report, the Welsh defender was a target for Rangers this summer, with head coach Russell Martin ready to rival Wrexham for the 22-year-old. Beck, who impressed on loan to Dundee during the 2023/24 campaign, was named Blackburn Rovers' player of the year award last season following a similar move to Ewood Park, is expected to be available for transfer this summer with his Anfield first team opportunities limited. It is claimed that Rangers were happy to pay around £7million in order to bring Beck to the club, and that the Glasgow giants were making progress in the deal as recently as Sunday evening. However, the Gers have now walked away from the deal due to Liverpool holding out for a fee that was closer to £10million. Beck is now expected to join Derby County on a season-long loan.
