US: LA car ramming driver shot, hospitalised, police say

The Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) said on Saturday that a man suspected of driving a car into a crowd in Hollywood had been hospitalized and was undergoing surgery.
The car ramming took place in the early hours of Saturday at the entrance of a nightclub. Some 30 people were injured in the incident.
Authorities said the man was shot during the incident, although it was unclear whether he was shot before or after he drove into the crowd.
"He was transported to the hospital, he's undergoing surgery, he is in stable condition. However, he is not free to leave, he is in the custody of Los Angeles Police Department, and we're looking at charges such as attempted murder and assault with a deadly weapon at this point," LAPD official Lillian Carranza told US broadcaster CBS, referring to the driver.
The driver, a 29-year-old man, was later charged with assault with a deadly weapon, according to police.
What do we know about the ramming?
The incident took place outside The Vermont nightclub, just before 2 a.m. local time (0900 GMT/UTC), the LA fire and police departments said. The venue was reportedly hosting a reggae/hip hop event.
People were queuing for the nightclub next to a taco cart and a valet queue when the ramming occurred.
A fire department spokesperson said the car appeared to first have targeted a food truck outside the nightclub, then it went through a valet parking stand and finally into a large group of people waiting to enter the venue, mostly women.
"When officers arrived, they found the driver being assaulted by bystanders and determined he had sustained a gunshot wound," a police statement said.
The LA Police Department said the incident was still being investigated.
A man suspected of shooting the driver fled the scene on foot, police said. He was possibly armed with a silver revolver.
The shooter is still at large and a manhunt is underway.
The LA Fire Department said some 23 people were taken to local hospitals due to the car ramming. Bass said seven were in critical condition while others were treated at the scene.
Mayor Karen Bass said the incident was "a heartbreaking tragedy' and thanked "more than 100 LAFD and LAPD personnel who responded to the scene to help to save lives.'

Trump demands prosecution of Kamala Harris over alleged million-dollar endorsement payments

Washington: US President Donald Trump on Saturday (local time) demanded that Kamala Harris and several top American celebrities be prosecuted for allegedly receiving and paying millions of dollars for endorsements during the 2024 presidential election. Trump called the move "totally illegal" and accused Democrats of breaking campaign finance laws. In a post on his Truth Social account, Trump accused Harris of spending millions of dollars to buy endorsements from stars such as singer Beyonce, TV host Oprah Winfrey, and civil rights activist Al Sharpton. He alleged the endorsements were paid for and not genuine, and called for legal action. "I'm looking at the large amount of money owed by the Democrats, after the Presidential Election, and the fact that they admit to paying, probably illegally, Eleven Million Dollars to singer Beyonce for an ENDORSEMENT (she never sang, not one note, and left the stage to a booing and angry audience!), Three Million Dollars for 'expenses,' to Oprah, Six Hundred Thousand Dollars to very low rated TV 'anchor,' Al Sharpton (a total lightweight!), and others to be named for doing, absolutely NOTHING! These ridiculous fees were incorrectly stated in the books and records. YOU ARE NOT ALLOWED TO PAY FOR AN ENDORSEMENT. IT IS TOTALLY ILLEGAL TO DO SO." "Can you imagine what would happen if politicians started paying for people to endorse them. All hell would break out! Kamala and all of those who received Endorsement money BROKE THE LAW. They should all be prosecuted," he further added. Trump's fresh attack comes amid controversy over his own handling of the Jeffrey Epstein case files. Earlier, Trump slammed the investigation into the Epstein case as a politically motivated campaign. He referred to it as a "con job" by Democrats to distract from his performance, The Hill reported. "The Radical Left Democrats are doing everything in their power to distract and obfuscate from our GREAT six months of service to America, results of which many are saying is the BEST six months in Presidential history," Trump posted on Truth Social. He added, "They have gone absolutely CRAZY, and are playing another Russia, Russia, Russia Hoax but, this time, under the guise of what we will call the Jeffrey Epstein SCAM. Hopefully, the Grand Jury Files will put an end to this HOAX."

Trump accuses Obama of 'treason,' without providing evidence

US President Donald Trump accused former President Barack Obama of "treason" on Tuesday without providing evidence. Trump cited his intelligence chief Tulsi Gabbard, who on Friday declassified documents that allegedly showed how Obama administration laid the groundwork for an investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election. "It's there, he's guilty. This was treason," Trump said in the Oval Office on Tuesday. "They tried to steal the election, they tried to obfuscate the election. They did things that nobody's ever imagined, even in other countries," Trump claimed, without offering any proof. Trump's remarks came as he deflected questions from journalists about the Justice Department's decision to interview Jeffrey Epstein's former girlfriend Ghislaine Maxwell, who was convicted of helping the financier sexually abuse underage girls and is now serving a lengthy prison sentence. Obama's office slams 'bizarre' deflection The office of the former president later hit back with a statement saying Trump's "bizarre allegations are ridiculous and a weak attempt at distraction." "Out of respect for the office of the presidency, our office does not normally dignify the constant nonsense and misinformation flowing out of this White House with a response," said Obama spokesperson Patrick Rodenbush. "But these claims are outrageous enough to merit one." A 2017 assessment by the US intelligence community concluded that Russia used social media disinformation, hacking and bot farms to damage Democrat Hillary Clinton's presidential campaign and bolster Trump. But the same assessment determined that the impact was likely limited and there was no evidence that Russia's efforts altered the election outcome. In 2020, a bipartisan report by the Senate Intelligence Committee — spearheaded by then acting chairman Marco Rubio, now Trump's secretary of state — found that the Trump campaign sought to "maximize the impact" of leaks of Democratic documents stolen by Russian military intelligence.
