Virgil van Dijk has promised to always be available for Diogo Jota 's family after the forward's tragic death.
The Liverpool captain released a moving statement saying he was 'absolutely devastated and in total disbelief' to lose his team-mate of five years.
Jota, 28, and his brother Andre Silva, 26, died in the early hours of Thursday morning after the Lamborghini they were driving in careened off a road in northern Spain after a tyre blew out.
The Portuguese star had been travelling to Santander to catch a ferry back to England ahead of pre-season, having been advised not to fly following lung surgery.
His death, which cast clouds of sorrow over the footballing world, came just two weeks after he married his girlfriend and mother of their three kids Rute Cardoso in Porto, his home city.
Van Dijk wrote on Instagram: 'Man, I can't believe it, I don't wanna believe it. Absolutely devastated and in total disbelief.

Virgil van Dijk has penned a heartfelt tribute to Diogo Jota after his team-mate's death
'What a human being, what a player, but most importantly what an unbelievable family man.
'You meant so much to all of us and you always will! For your family to lose two sons, a husband and a father is just unimaginable. So cruel and unfair.
'My heart is breaking for all of your beautiful family, for Rute and for your kids. I promise you that in these difficult times and beyond we will always be there for your family.
'A champion forever, number 20 forever. It's been a privilege to have stood by your side on the pitch, and to have been your friend off it.
'We will miss you beyond words and never forget you. Your legacy will live on, we will make sure of it!
'Rest in perfect peace Diogo & Andre.'
Van Dijk was one of Jota's most frequent team-mates throughout his career - they played together 130 times for Liverpool.
They first linked up in 2020 after Jota signed from Wolves and went on to experience the highs and lows of elite football together.
There were immense highs: a Premier League triumph, FA Cup glory, two Carabao Cups lifted.
And the pair also had to endure defeat in the 2022 Champions League final to Real Madrid - an experience which only strengthened their bond.
Like Van Dijk, the football world was left in disbelief when the news broke that Jota and his brother Andre had passed away.
The brothers were driving eastward along an isolated stretch of highway, about an hour west of Zamora, when the accident took place.
Their Lamborghini came off the road, rolled and then burst into flames at around 12.35am, also igniting the surrounding vegetation. The emergency services were called but the brothers could not be saved. Police say they don't yet know who was driving.
Spanish government official Ángel Blanco said the siblings died at the scene.
Liverpool are due to start pre-season training on Monday, so Jota was heading back to the UK on a road trip with his brother.
Doctors reportedly advised the Liverpool star not to catch a plane after a recent operation, so he was getting a boat instead. A Brittany Ferries service from Santander to Plymouth left at 4pm on Thursday, arriving in Devon at 11.15am on Friday.
Lines can be seen on the road today where the Lamborghini overtook a car and then straight into the crash barriers
CNN Portugal's sports editor Rui Loura said today live on air: 'The surgery he had was lung surgery and he had been advised against flying following this.
'He was on his way to the northern Spanish port city of Santander to cross by ferry and reach the UK that way and carry on with the car once he reached Britain. He was on his way to Liverpool with his brother.'
Another Portuguese journalist, Victor Pinto told the country's CMTV channel: 'Diogo sometimes chose to travel by road because he had some pulmonary discomfort, nothing serious, and as we know, there is a ferry boat that connects the south of England to Spain'.
Tributes poured in for a talented star who has been widely remembered for his humility, humour, and care for his family.
One of the most moving came from Andy Robertson, who wrote: 'The ones I'm thinking about most right now are the family. Their loss is too much to bear. I'm so sorry that they have lost two such precious souls – Diogo and Andre.
'For the team and the Club, we'll try to cope with this together… however long that takes. For me, I want to talk about my mate. My buddy. The bloke I loved and will miss like crazy.
'I could talk about him as a player for hours, but none of that feels like it matters right now. It's the man. The person. He was such a good guy. The best. So genuine. Just normal and real.
'Full of love for the people he cared about. Full of fun. He was the most British foreign player I've ever met. We used to joke he was really Irish… I'd try to claim him as Scottish, obviously. I even called him Diogo MacJota.
We'd watch the darts together, enjoy the horse racing. Going to Cheltenham this season was a highlight - one of the best we had. The last time I saw him was the happiest day of his life – his wedding day. I want to remember his never-ceasing smile from that magical day. How much he was bursting with love for his wife and family.
'I can't believe we're saying goodbye. It's too soon, and it hurts so much. But thank you for being in my life, mate – and for making it better. Love you, Diogo.'

'I'm joining Arteta's team – I tried for Liverpool deal and caused Man Utd rift'

Former Manchester United star Gabriel Heinze once was regarded as a legend in the making at the club. Joining the Red Devils from PSG in 2004, a Premier League title followed as the Old Trafford faithful adored his full-blooded commitment on the pitch – until he tried to leave United under hugely controversial circumstances. Heinze's next move was viewed as self-sabotage of the highest order as the Argentinian star set fire to his United legacy when he attempted to force a move to Liverpool in the summer of 2007. In doing so he subsequently broke one of English football's most sacred yet unwritten rules: players not move from United to their bitter rivals and vice-versa. Heinze, now 47, is now set to join Mikel Arteta 's coaching staff at Arsenal ahead of the new season as the Gunners are in the midst of a coaching reshuffle, with former assistant Carlos Cuesta having departed for Parma. Heinze's return to the Premier League will no doubt ignite memories of one of English football's most brutal transfer sagas of when the Argentinian was seeking to traipse the M62 divide and join then-manager Rafa Benitez at Liverpool. The controversial switch would have made him the first player since Phil Chisnall in 1964 to move directly between the two sides. Yet the union of Heinze and Liverpool will always be a case of 'What if?' Former United manager Sir Alex Ferguson spectacularly dug his heels in to ensure that the defender would never get his wish. It began as Heinze's agent, Roberto Rodriguez, was reportedly informed by United's then-chief executive David Gill that he could leave for £6.8million. Yet United never foresaw that the full-back would clamour for a switch to their greatest rivals. An offer matching United's valuation was then indeed lodged by the Reds. However, the Red Devils knocked back Liverpool's proposal, to Heinze's dismay, and so lawyers were consulted. "I can assure you, Liverpool will not be getting Gabriel Heinze. We can put that to bed right now and we have done so," Ferguson told Sky Sports at the time. The legendary United boss also claimed United were in the driving seat over the move. Benitez however was left stunned by United's refusal to play ball. "It's clear he's a player we like and he's a very good player," Liverpool's Spanish boss said. "That's the reason why they don't want him to leave for us." In another twist to one of the Premier League's bloodiest transfer tussles, it later emerged that Crystal Palace were offered the chance to buy Heinze by a South American-based agency, and then sell him to Liverpool straight after. This would allegedly pocket the Eagles £1m in compensation, as revealed by former Palace chairman Simon Jordan in his memoir, Be Careful What You Wish For. "My stance was no way were we getting involved and I told Alexander to contact David Gill, Manchester United 's chief executive, and tell him of these attempted shenanigans, which he duly did," Jordan wrote. Heinze and his agent eventually took the case to a Premier League arbitration panel in a bid to engineer the move. However, Jordan's evidence was later used in the hearing which saw United prevail. After losing the right to move to Liverpool, Heinze told the Daily Mail: "My fight is for the freedom to negotiate with any club. United never wanted me to leave for one of the big clubs, but this anti-Liverpool clause is incredible." Liverpool were reportedly expecting Heinze to appeal. Yet a late charge never materialised from the player as United accepted a bid from Real Madrid. "I don't have many regrets from my career as a footballer, but that episode with Ferguson [has] to be one of them," Heinze later said of the ordeal. "I spent three years in Manchester and had some great moments and I regret [leaving the club] a lot." After United, Heinze went on to play for Madrid, Marseille and Roma. The ex-Argentina international called time on his career in 2014 and has since ventured into management, however he has been out of work since November 2023. Arteta and Heinze previously played together at PSG but they will now reunite at the Emirates Stadium. It's fully expected that Heinze's journey to work at another of United's fierce rivals will be without drama this time around.

Diogo Jota latest: Former Liverpool captain pays emotional tribute to Jota at Anfield vigil

Crowds in Portugal gather for the saddest of homecomings By Rob Harris, sports correspondent, in Gondomar On a quiet side street by Capela da Ressurreicao, on the outskirts of Porto, the crowd had been building through the night. Waiting for the saddest of homecomings. And at 11.30pm last night, the tranquillity of the night was broken by dozens applauding as the hearse carrying the coffins of two footballing sons of Gondomar arrived. The tragedy has resonated around the world. But their loss is felt most painfully here in their hometowns. A few minutes' drive away at Gondomar Sport Club, the collection of flowers, scarves, jerseys and candles was growing outside the academy named after Jota. It's there I encountered a former teammate of the 28-year-old who went on to win every major English trophy with Liverpool. Miguel Rocha was wearing one of Jota's Number 20 Liverpool shirts and clutching a jersey from previous club, Wolves, gifted by his friend. They played together here for a decade, through the youth ranks. "Back then, every child dreams of going professional," Rocha told Sky News. "But at the same time, we know it's very difficult, but he got it. "Me and my colleagues who played together back then, we were all very proud. "This community of Gondomar, as well as Portugal, every time we saw Diogo Jota on the pitch, we felt very proud. Nothing but pride." Licínio Ribeiro Correia watched both brothers growing up at Gondomar and continued to spend time with them. "We could see right away in Diogo that he was hungry for the ball," he recalled. "When he played, the goals were a spectacle. "Then he left here and went to Paços de Ferreira, he went to a bigger club and oh well, we lost Diogo." But Jota never forgot his roots, sending a shirt back from England to Correia. The forward's last act in a Portugal shirt was helping his country to a second Nations League title. He left Liverpool after a Premier League trophy parade and so many at the vigil came in the club's red shirts. One of them was Afonso Gama who has just completed the season playing for Gondomar's under-19s. Through the sadness, Gama reflected on seeing a player rise from such a modest, low-level club to the heights of the sport. "He made us believe that's possible," Gama told Sky News. "We know it's not for everybody. We have to work hard. "And he was an inspiration for everybody who played here."
