Broncos' Gem has big contract decision looming large

Yahoo10 hours ago
Gehamat Shibasaki has gone from unwanted to hot property on the player market and now a tough call awaits the Brisbane and Queensland star.
The 27-year-old, known as 'Gem', is off is contract at the end of next year and on a modest salary but his manager Wade Rushton has told Wide World of Sports that the Broncos have been unable to offer him a deal beyond that.
On Tuesday, Shibasaki said his next deal was not on his mind right now. His stellar season has been founded on "staying present" and not looking too far ahead.
Other clubs will be able to field offers for Shibasaki, who is now one of the game's form centres, from November 1.
"When it comes to (November 1) I will think about that but what I have been doing is narrowing my focus to now. That has been a big part of my success so far," Shibasaki said.

He added that "the Broncos mean a lot to me" but he is expected to be offered a hefty pay increase by other clubs and financial decisions will have to be made.
"That is another thing I have got to sit down with my family and talk about," he said.
"You look at my age now and I am coming to the older side of things. I will focus on that when the time comes."
The fairytale rise of Shibasaki has been steep but there is another mountain he wants to climb.
The message from the blockbusting centre to his increasing number of fans will be music to their ears.
There's a premiership for the fifth-placed Broncos to win.
"That's been the goal since the pre-season once I did get that contract done," Shibasaki said ahead of Friday night's home clash with Parramatta.
"The next step was to play and aim for that premiership at the end of the year. We still have seven more weeks left and then finals kick in. This is the time where we knuckle down and get ready for that.
After linking with Wynnum Manly, Shibasaki started the 2025 pre-season started with no NRL contract.
He earned a train and trial deal and then a development list contract, which he is still on, then an upgrade to the top 30 for next year. Then followed an incredible Queensland call-up for the State of Origin decider where he set up a try and outplayed gun NSW opposite number Stephen Crichton.
"Origin was an unreal experience for me and my family. I'm still pinching myself now. It's about taking all that experience and bringing it back here and doing well for the rest of the season," he said.
This season Shibasaki has played 16 games in which he has scored 12 tries, made 13 line breaks and 61 tackle busts.
To put just one of those impressive statistics in perspective, that is twice as many tries as he had scored in his previous 30 NRL matches in seven seasons since debuting in 2018.

Bulgarian nets brace in Wanderers win

Bulgarian international Bozhidar Kraev scored twice as Western Sydney Wanderers cruised into the Australia Cup round of 16 with a 3-0 win over NPL Queensland club Peninsula Power on Tuesday night. New Wanderers signing, veteran New Zealand international attacker Kosta Barbarouses, also found the back of the net at AJ Kelly Park as Peninsula's attempt to disrupt the visitors by narrowing the pitch proved to be fruitless. Kraev scored twice in the opening 23 minutes, with Barbarouses' goal nine minutes later putting the game to bed. It could have been worse for the Power, but goalkeeper Jordan Thurtell saved a 59th-minute penalty to deny Kraev a hat-trick. 'It was how we planned it, how we expected it and how we wished things to go,' Kraev told Paramount Plus in reflecting on his side's overall performance. The Wanderers starting side also included another of the club's off-season acquisitions in former Central Coast Mariners striker Alou Kuol, while ex-Melbourne City midfielder Steven Ugarkovic, who also recently signed with Western Sydney, was a second-half substitute. Joining the Wanderers in the round of 16 with wins on Tuesday night were Victorian clubs Avondale and Nunawading City. Avondale thrashed West Australian outfit Stirling Macedonia 5-1, while fourth-tier club Nunawading set a record Australia Cup scoreline with a 9-0 thumping of Darwin Olympic.

Lions hold off First Nations and Pasifika XV 24-19 in a rugged tour game in Australia

MELBOURNE, Australia (AP) — The British and Irish Lions held off the First Nations and Pasifika XV 24-19 in a tough, physical contest on Tuesday in the last of their midweek games on the Australian tour. The Lions can now focus on trying to clinch the three-test series against the Wallabies on Saturday in Melbourne after winning the first match 27-19 last weekend in Brisbane. 'We've given ourselves a bit of a fright," Lions head coach Andy Farrell said. 'Congratulations to the First Nations and Pasifika team, (they) made it a hard-fought contest that's for sure.' The Lions are now 7-0 in Australia, including the test match, victories over Super Rugby franchises Western Force,Queensland Reds, Waratahs and Brumbies and two invitational teams. Jamie Osborne scored the opening tries of each half Tuesday and the Lions twice had big leads before being pinned back by the First Nations and Pasifika team, which was drawn from players with Indigenous Australia and Pacific Islands heritage. Making the most of a penalty advantage, the Lions took a 24-14 lead when Owen Farrell dummied a pass to unsettle the defense and send an unmarked Duhan van der Merwe over in the left corner with 15 minutes to play. But the invitational team rallied again, cutting the lead to five points in the 71st when Rob Leota scored a try from close range and sustaining pressure right until fulltime. It had been 14-14 at halftime after each team scored two converted tries and spent 10 minutes giving up a numerical advantage because of yellow cards. The Lions were up 14-0 after center Osborne chased through Fin Smith's chip kick and touched down, while winger Darcy Graham crossed out wide. From a lineout win by Henry Pollock, the Lions created an overlap with players looping in midfield and sent a long, floating pass to the unmarked Scottish winger. But Graham had to leave the field soon after with an injury. Triston Reilly, who was yellow-carded early, returned to score the First Nations and Pasifika's opening try after an intercept on the quarter-line. Blindside flanker Seru Uru picked up and reached over amid three tacklers in the 23rd minute and Kurtley Beale converted to level the score, ensuring the touring Lions knew they were in a contest. 'I'm thankful we got the job done in the end,' skipper Owen Farrell said. ___ AP rugby:
