Scope of digital wallets to be expanded: PM
Speaking at a ceremony honoring those who made significant contributions to the success of the Prime Minister's Ramazan Relief Package, Sharif touted the power of modern payment methods in transforming fund transfers, making them not only faster and more transparent but also preserving the dignity of recipients.
'Through digital wallets, 79% of the relief funds were distributed seamlessly and without a hitch,' he declared, slamming the outdated system that had previously plagued the programme.
He revealed plans for next year, vowing that 100% of disbursements would be digital, ensuring full utilization of relief funds through cutting-edge technology.
The overhaul, he added, will continue to evolve, with provincial governments gradually integrated into the national digital payment network.
Amir Ahmed Ali, the Federal Secretary of Benazir Income Support Programme (BISP), gave an in-depth briefing on the success of the Ramazan Relief Package and the pivotal role digital wallets played in the process.
The prime minister also took the opportunity to recognize key officials from both the public and private sectors, presenting honorary shields to those whose efforts were crucial in the program's success.

Restrictions on access of family to jail: Adiala jail authorities directed to act on IK's sister plea
ISLAMABAD: The special court on Monday ordered Adiala jail authorities to act on a petition filed by Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founding chairman Imran Khan's sister against restrictions on access of family members to jail during the trial of the Toshakhana-II case against Khan and his wife as per law. Special Judge Central Shahrukh Arjumand, while hearing a petition filed by Khan's sister, Aleema Khan, against barring her and her other family members from attending the jail trial of Toshakhana-II case against Khan and his wife, Bushra Bibi. The court directed Adiala jail authorities to act on the petition in accordance with the law. Aleema Khan's counsel, Khalid Yousaf Chaudhry, appeared before the court. He argued that despite clear court orders, family members were not being allowed to enter Adiala Jail. According to the petition, not only were family members denied access, but Imran Khan's legal team was also barred from participating in jail proceedings. The petition stated that in previous cases such as Toshakhana, cipher, and Al-Qadir Trust, restrictions on access to jail were unjustified and unlawful. Chaudhry further told the court that denying access to family members and lawyers constitutes a violation of the legal rights of the accused. The petition also challenged the legitimacy of the trial in the cipher case due to the lack of access, claiming the proceedings were flawed. The petition stressed that under Section 352 of the Criminal Procedure Code, the trial should be open, and public access is a fundamental right. It further asserted that under Article 10-A of the Constitution, the right to legal representation is a basic right of every citizen. The petition maintained that there is no legal basis to prevent family members from attending hearings, and such denial is unconstitutional and undermines the principle of a fair trial. He said that the court had earlier issued clear orders to ensure access for both family and the legal team, but those orders were not being implemented. Sentences of four PTI workers suspended
ISLAMABAD: A local court on Monday suspended the sentences of four Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) workers convicted in connection with cases registered against them under the Peaceful Assembly and Public Order (PAPO) Act, 2024. Judicial Magistrate Mureed Abbas, while hearing the case, approved the request to suspend the sentence of four accused including Danish, Essa, Ejaz, and Muhammad Essa who had earlier been sentenced to six months in prison in a case registered at Tarnol Police Station. Miftah for probe into sugar export ‘crisis'
KARACHI: Former federal finance minister Miftah Ismail on Monday called for a thorough investigation into the country's recent sugar export crisis alleging that the policy benefited only a select group of sugar mill owners and was driven by vested government interests. Addressing at a press conference in Karachi, Ismail categorically rejected corruption allegations levelled against him by two senators from the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), terming them 'baseless and politically motivated.' He singled out PML-N leader Tariq Fazal Chaudhry, stating that the former minister had already apologised to him privately for making false accusations regarding the Benazir Income Support Programme (BISP). 'I was in jail when the funds for this program were raised,' Ismail said, insisting he had no involvement in the alleged mismanagement. 'These allegations are being made simply because I speak the truth about the failures of this government,' he said, adding that if Chaudhry or any other accuser has evidence, they should bring it forward. 'Otherwise, apologise or be ready to face the court,' he added. Commenting on the sugar export policy, the former finance minister said the export was deliberately carried out to create an artificial price hike. 'Sugar was exported to make it expensive. Only mill owners benefited, and the decision was taken in an organised way,' he alleged. In a surprising revelation, Ismail said that the foreign minister was made the head of the committee overseeing sugar matters — a move he described as unprecedented and a reflection of the government's conflict of interest. 'This is not just about sugar; this is about the government's priorities,' he said. Ismail also criticised the federal government's policies, especially in the agriculture and energy sectors. 'The current government is not farmer-friendly. The farming community has been left to suffer while sugar barons thrive,' he said, expressing concern over rising input costs and a lack of subsidies. On the issue of power tariffs, Ismail lamented the growing burden on the common citizen. 'Electricity prices are increasing every other day. The poor are being crushed under the weight of overbilling and inefficiencies,' he said, referring to the recent Rs 244 billion in electricity overbilling. 'If you are honest, return this amount to the people.' Taking aim at the ruling party, he said, 'Shehbaz Sharif's government has been in power for three years, but all we see is worsening governance and growing public misery. Even good governance has been washed away by the floods in Punjab.' He also expressed sorrow over the recent tragedies, including the boat sinking in Gwadar and deaths caused by monsoon rains across the country. 'I offer my deepest condolences to the families affected by these disasters,' he said.
