Soccer-Wilder leaves Sheffield Utd after failed Premier League promotion bid
(Reuters) -Sheffield United and manager Chris Wilder mutually agreed to part ways after the club failed to gain promotion to the Premier League, the second-tier Championship side said on Wednesday.
Wilder had signed a contract extension until 2028 with the Blades earlier this year but after finishing third in the Championship, they failed to win the playoff final, losing 2-1 to Sunderland, who scored the winner deep into stoppage time.
"Sheffield United can confirm a mutually agreed decision has been reached for manager Chris Wilder to leave the football club," the club said in a statement.
"After returning to the club during a difficult period in 2023, he has provided stability and created a new team which earned a Steel City derby double amongst other notable highlights last season.
"Showing his calibre as a manager, he guided the club to third place finish... before a heartbreaking conclusion in the playoff final."
It marks the second time Wilder has left the club after his first spell in charge ended in March 2021 when they were rooted to the bottom of the Premier League table, with the club eventually going down.
"I'm obviously disappointed to be leaving, particularly because we were so close to getting back to the Premier League. I'm a Sheffielder through and through, I love this club and this city and that feeling will never change," Wilder said.
"I depart with some cherished memories and feel proud to be talked about in the same manner that special Sheffield United managers are remembered – leading this team over 300 times will remain an incredible part of my life."

Mekies said he had been contacted "out of the blue" by Red Bull's head of corporate projects Oliver Mintzlaff and motorsport consultant Helmut Marko to offer him the job of principal. His immediate response was to ask for time to consider, and then he put the phone down. "First thought obviously goes to, in this moment as well, to Christian," he explained. "Because it's not something that, you know, I could have expected. And he had been nothing else than extremely supportive with me these last two years." Mekies said he had then called back and accepted the challenge. "You just say, of course. You know, if you think you need me there, I will go there." Mekies said providing the team's four-times world champion Max Verstappen with a fast car was a priority, as that would then resolve other issues about his future plans, and morale was holding up. "The focus is very much to, as we said earlier, try to get to know the team as quickly as possible in order to see how we can support, how we can build the next step of competitiveness in order to get a fast car," he said. The Liberty Global-controlled series said the 10-year extension, with sources indicating an option for a further five years, provided a solid platform for long-term growth and investment opportunities. Formula E expects its cars to be on the same level as, or exceeding the performance of, other top tier series including Formula One by the middle of the century. The current Gen3 Evo car can already accelerate from 0-60 miles per hour (0-96kph) in 1.82 seconds, 30% faster than a Formula One car with a top speed of 200mph (321kph). "We've believed in Formula E since day one, and this extension reaffirms our confidence in where it's headed," said Liberty Global CEO Mike Fries. "With the FIA's continued backing, we can now take the next big steps -- scaling the sport, growing its global fanbase, and continuing to push the boundaries of what electric racing can achieve." Formula E chief executive Jeff Dodds said the series had shown extraordinary growth in 11 seasons so far. "With this longterm extension, the opportunity that Formula E now has to impact world motorsport will be truly transformational," he said.
