Sai Sudharsan rejects Shubman Gill's request to bat but confirmed to return in India's XI; Karun Nair won't be dropped

Hindustan Times2 days ago
India captain Shubman Gill crossed Sai Sudharsan at one point in Old Trafford on Tuesday and asked: "Sai, nets?" When you are 1-2 down in the series and on the eve of the all-important fourth Test, your captain comes and asks whether you'd like to bat in the nets; generally, it's a no-brainer. You, of course, oblige. But not Sai Sudharsan. He rejected Shubman Gill's offer with a smile. India's Sai Sudharsan is se to be back in the XI in Manchester(AFP)
Gill wasn't offended by any means. He, in fact, knew that Sai Sudharsan would never bat on the eve of the match, for he had stopped doing that since this year's IPL. And Gill, his captain, even in the Gujarat Titans, knew this very well.
According to Cricbuzz, Sai Sudharsan, who loves to bat long hours in the nets in the lead-up to a match, showed tendencies of getting tired while batting for long in the middle during IPL 2024. The GT coaches observed this and told him to take it easy a day before the match, just to preserve energy.
The switch came a year later. Sai Sudharsan would go hard in the nets, train, sprint and bat for hours two days before the match but would spend the next day relaxing. He was even given an option to stay back at the hotel but the left-hander from Tamil Nadu chose not to. He would travel with the team to the ground, do some light jogging and stretches but avoid batting completely. The method worked wonders as Sai ended up as the leading run-scorer of IPL 2025, and since then, he has carried on with his practice of not batting at all on the eve of a match.
If Sai not batting on Tuesday didn't confirm his return to the India XI for the fourth Test in Manchester, him inspecting the pitch and doing shadow practice definitely did. This is another routine that Sai follows before a match. In order to get a feel of the centre, he walks up to the pitch, empty-handed and does shadow knocking. He did that twice on Tuesday -- once when the pitch was covered and the second time when the sun had peeped and the covers were taken off.
Sai Sudharsan confirmed to play in Manchester, Karun Nair won't be dropped
Sai made his debut in the series opener at Headingley. He was out for a duck in the first innings. In the second innings, he scored 30. It was, however, not enough to give him another chance in the second Test. That India changed the make-up of their side also contributed to Sai's exclusion from the XI.
In Manchester, India are likely to use the Headingley template because of injuries to Akash Deep and Nitish Kumar Reddy. India head coach Gautam Gambhir prefers multiple batting and bowling options. Considering India's long tail, Gambhir would not want to promote Washington Sundar to No. 7 in the absence of Nitish Reddy. That's where Sai Sudharsan, a specialist batter, comes into the mix.
This also means that Karun Nair is likely to get another opportunity in the XI despite six failures with the bat. But whether he would continue batting at No.3 or that spot would go to Sai, like in Headingley, remains to be seen.
Young pacer Anushul Kamboj is another player who is all but confirmed to get into the XI. He is set to make his debut in place of the injured Akash Deep.

RCB pacer Yash Dayal accused of raping minor; FIR registered in Jaipur

JAIPUR: IPL side Royal Challengers Bengaluru's under-fire pacer Yash Dayal has been accused of raping a minor in an FIR registered against him by Jaipur Police. The 27-year-old cricketer from Uttar Pradesh is already facing charges of sexual exploitation from a woman in Ghaziabad who has alleged that Dayal abused her after promising to marry her during a five-year relationship. SHO of Jaipur's Sanganer Sadar police station Anil Jaiman said that the latest FIR was registered on Wednesday. "FIR was registered against Yash Dayal for rape under relevant sections of POCSO (Protection of Children from Sexual Offences) act and the BNS (Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita)," he said here on Friday. According to Jaiman, the victim has alleged that the player raped her first in 2023 when she was 17 and a similar assault took place in April this year at a hotel in Sitapura area. "She alleged that the cricketer had promised help and support in her career. He contacted her in April this year when he was in Jaipur for IPL and called her to the hotel where he allegedly raped her again," the SHO said, adding that the matter was under investigation. Dayal, a medium pacer, is a reasonably well-known bowler in the Indian domestic circuit. He made his debut for Uttar Pradesh in 2018 and has since played 27 first-class games, claiming 84 wickets. He has appeared in 71 T20 matches that have yielded 66 scalps. Dayal started his IPL career with the Gujarat Titans in 2022 before moving to RCB, which bought him for Rs five crore in the 2024 players' auction. He was retained by the Bengaluru team for this year's season too and was a key member of the trophy-winning outfit under Rajat Patidar.

UP Warriorz appoint Abhishek Nayar as head coach

Mumbai, Jul 25 (PTI) Former India assistant coach Abhishek Nayar was on Friday named as the head coach of the Women's Premier League (WPL) franchise UP Warriorz ahead of the fourth season of the competition. Nayar, who was removed as the Indian men's team assistant coach recently, less than a year into the job, joins UPW after the franchise parted ways with Jon Lewis, who had been in charge of the team for the last three seasons. This isn't Nayar's first association with the Warriorz as he also helped them during the team's off-season training camps in Bengaluru after the first edition of the league. Speaking on his appointment, Nayar said, 'I really enjoyed my time working with the UP Warriorz before and I'm thrilled to take on this new role. WPL is a fantastic platform for women's cricket and I'm looking forward to working closely with the management to build a strong team. 'UP Warriorz already have a strong foundation in place, and I believe we can build something truly special. There is incredible potential and I will give it my all to help win their first-ever title this season." Nayar, who represented Mumbai with distinction in first-class cricket, also played three ODIs for India before his retirement in 2019. Since then, he has made a name for himself in coaching and was part of the Kolkata Knight Riders support staff as their assistant coach during their triumphant IPL campaign in 2024. Several high-profile cricketers such as Dinesh Karthik and KL Rahul have talked about the positive turn that Nayar brought about in their game. He has also served as the coach of the KKR academy in 2018 and was the head coach of Trinbago Knight Riders (TKR) in Caribbean Premier League in 2022. Nayar was appointed as the Indian men's team's assistant coach after Gambhir Gambhir became its head coach and was part of the team that won the Champions Trophy in the UAE earlier this year. However, his contract was terminated after that and he returned as KKR's assistant coach for IPL 2025. Jinisha Sharma, director at Capri Sports, which owns the franchise, said, 'We believe that this appointment shows our strong intent to elevate the team's performance and push for greater success in the upcoming WPL season. 'With Abhishek Nayar's leadership, experience in coaching at the highest level and ability to bring out the best in players, the franchise is confident of a strong showing this season." Kshemal Waingankar, COO, UP Warriorz, said, 'Abhishek Nayar is one of the best brains in the business in global cricket, and we are delighted to have on our side as the head coach. 'We are excited about his vision for UP Warriorz, and we are confident that under his leadership, the team can provide its fans with many more memorable moments in the future."
