
VIA Rail plans to use refurbished cars to improve service between Halifax-Montreal
Mario Péloquin made the comments after a ceremony marking the completion of renovations to Via's Halifax station.
Péloquin also noted that last year was the 120th anniversary of The Ocean — the train from Montreal to Halifax inaugurated in July 1904.

The CEO says the federal government has committed to renewing the corporation's entire Canadian fleet within ten years.
And in the interim, Péloquin says there are plans to refurbish stainless steel cars that are being retired in Central Canada for use in the Atlantic region.
But Péloquin says he doesn't know yet whether the refurbished cars will be enough to restore daily service to the Halifax-Montreal line, which currently runs three times a week.

Calgary city council approves zoning for tower development in Marda Loop
A significant change could soon be coming to the heart of Marda Loop after Calgary city council approved the zoning for a proposed tower development in the area. Truman Homes partnered with Calgary Co-op on the proposal, which seeks develop a two-acre site on the corner of 33 Avenue and 20 Street S.W. with a pair of 19-storey towers, an 11-storey building and a shorter six-storey building. The height of the smaller towers changed from original proposal of eight-storey buildings, according to the developer, to shift building mass away from 33 Avenue S.W. to reduce impacts to sunlight. The development, entitled Marc and Mada Block, after the owners of a former theatre that used to be in the neighbourhood, is set to include 441 residential units, a 600-stall parkade, a grocery store, and other commercial space. Seventeen affordable housing units are also included in the proposal, less than the 34 originally proposed. Let's go build something, but not over the existing height restriction,' said Brendan Murphy, who said the towers 'looming' over the neighbourhood would impact aesthetics of the area. Marda Loop has been the epicentre of a multi-year construction project aimed at redesigning the streetscape around Marda Loop and the proposed tower complex, which is the subject of a $75 million lawsuit filed by area businesses against the City of Calgary. With that in mind, some speakers had concerns about the developer's ability to mitigate impacts if a development permit is approved for the tower project. 'They can't prevent the impact from this kind of construction,' said Michael Bruni. According to a presentation from the developer's representative CivicWorks, there will be a dedicated project team and community liaison assigned to proactively manage construction, which will include a website with real-time schedule and activity updates for area residents and businesses. 'This is a community that's experienced a lot of growth and change,' said CivicWorks principal David White. 'Truman and Calgary Co-op are committed to a proactive and really thoughtful plan to make sure construction is thoughtfully managed and minimize any impacts.' 'This will ultimately enhance the community but we've got to make sure that we're doing it in a way that's respectful of the folks who live and work there already,' Mayor Jyoti Gondek told reporters following the vote. A development permit for the project is currently under review at the City of Calgary. If it's approved, the project's website said shovels could be in the ground sometime next year.

Frontera Announces Normal Course Issuer Bid
CALGARY, AB, July 15, 2025 /CNW/ - Frontera Energy Corporation (TSX: FEC) (" Frontera" or the " Company") announces that the Toronto Stock Exchange (the " TSX") has accepted its notice to initiate a normal course issuer bid (the " NCIB") for its common shares (the " Common Shares"). Pursuant to the NCIB, Frontera may purchase up to 3,502,962 Common Shares during the 12-month period commencing July 18, 2025, and ending July 17, 2026, representing approximately 5% of the Company's issued and outstanding Common Shares as at July 15, 2025. As at July 15, 2025, there were 70,059,243 Common Shares issued and outstanding. There are no persons acting jointly or in concert with the Company in respect of the NCIB. The average daily trading volume of the Common Shares (as calculated in accordance with the TSX rules) was 48,188 Common Shares over the period between January 1, 2025 and June 30, 2025. Consequently, daily purchases through the facilities of the TSX will be limited to 12,047 Common Shares, other than block purchase exceptions. Frontera believes that, from time to time, the market price of its Common Shares may not fully reflect the underlying value of its business, future prospects and financial position. In such circumstances, Frontera may purchase for cancellation outstanding Common Shares, thereby benefitting all shareholders by increasing the underlying value of the remaining Common Shares. In connection with its NCIB, Frontera has entered into an automatic share purchase plan (the " Plan") with its designated broker, BMO Nesbitt Burns Inc. (" BMO"), to facilitate the purchase of Common Shares under the NCIB. The Plan allows for purchases by the Company of its Common Shares at any time, including, without limitation, when the Company would ordinarily not be permitted to make purchases due to regulatory restriction or self-imposed blackout periods. Edmonton group pushes growth, claims suburbs generate more taxes than costs
Amid an ongoing narrative that Edmonton needs more infill and to build up — not out — a group of businesses argues dense suburbs filled with all styles of homes don't cost the city money. On Tuesday, BILD Edmonton Metro and industry leaders released their Urban Growth Case Study, which they said is a data-driven look at how urban expansion is impacting Edmonton's economy, infrastructure, and communities. 'There's been a rhetoric that growth costs too much money and we can't afford to grow,' said Katrina Rowe, the president of homebuilder Cantiro Homes and BILD Edmonton Metro Board Chair. 'Some of our current council believes we can't afford to grow.' BILD is a non-profit development and construction advocate, calling itself 'the voice and expert resource for the real estate development industry in the Edmonton metro region.' The study said within Heritage Valley and Windermere, the City of Edmonton collects 77 per cent of its tax revenue from residential development, 17 per cent from commercial or industrial, properties, and six per cent from multi-residential buildings like apartments. After the education portion transfers to the Province of Alberta, the City of Edmonton currently collects over $163 million dollars annually from Heritage Valley and Windermere, BILD said.
