Karnataka CM Responds To Fatal Bengaluru Stadium Incident, Cites Historical Precedents

Hans India04-06-2025
Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah held a press conference Thursday following the devastating stampede at a Bengaluru stadium that resulted in 11 fatalities and approximately 50 injuries. During his address to the media, the Chief Minister acknowledged the occurrence of similar incidents in the past while clarifying his position on the tragedy.
"Multiple stampede incidents have taken place previously," Siddaramaiah stated, while emphasizing that his comments should not be interpreted as justification for the current incident. He specifically mentioned the Kumbh Mela stampede from earlier this year as an example, but stressed his intent was not to defend the Bengaluru tragedy.
The Chief Minister explained the circumstances that led to the disaster, highlighting the massive disparity between expected and actual attendance. While the stadium's official capacity stands at 35,000 people, an estimated 200,000 to 300,000 individuals gathered at the venue, creating an unprecedented situation that overwhelmed the facility's safety measures.
Siddaramaiah also drew attention to a contrasting scenario that occurred at Vidhan Soudha, where more than 100,000 people assembled without any adverse incidents. This comparison underscored the unpredictable nature of crowd management and the specific challenges faced at the stadium location.
The Chief Minister's remarks came as authorities investigate the circumstances surrounding the stampede and work to prevent similar tragedies in the future. The incident has raised serious questions about crowd control measures and safety protocols at large public gatherings in the state.

Congress cadre wait prolongs for political appointments to Karnataka's boards

Bengaluru: Even as the Congress high command finalised names to head 29 smaller boards and corporations, hundreds of political posts of directors and members remain in limbo, leading to fresh disappointment among the party cadre in Karnataka. Chief minister Siddaramaiah and DCM DK Shivakumar, who also heads KPCC, met AICC general secretary Randeep Singh Surjewala in Delhi Thursday to finalise the limited list. Party insiders say Shivakumar is likely to release the names of chairpersons once he returns to Bengaluru this weekend. Siddaramaiah told the media that Shivakumar, Surjewala and he had finalised chairpersons for boards and corporations, making a few changes. However, the final decision is up to the party high command," said Siddaramaiah. However, the much-awaited appointments to the remaining 950 posts continue to be delayed. Of the 1,118 sanctioned political posts across boards and corporations, only 118 have been filled so far. According to officials in the chief minister's office (CMO), the party has now decided to collect three nominations per assembly constituency from the party's sitting MLAs and defeated candidates of the 2023 elections to identify suitable candidates for the posts. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Libas Purple Days Sale Libas Undo "Names for 650 posts have been completed with the new exercise being considered for 300 pending posts," said a CMO official. Despite repeated assurances from the top leadership about "rewarding" party workers for their efforts in bringing Congress to power in 2023, the delay continues nearly two years into the govt's term. To speed up the process, Siddaramaiah had set up a panel in June 2024 under home minister G Parameshwara to identify eligible functionaries. The panel submitted over 500 names to the high command, but none has been cleared so far. Siddaramaiah had earlier promised that the appointments would be finalised by July 16 — a deadline that has come and gone. Party insiders attribute the delay to factionalism. "One group approves a list, but another opposes it. A third group of functionaries under a senior leader seeks its own validation for the posts. Overall, internal politics has delayed the appointments for a while now," said a cabinet minister, suggesting that it may still take another week to 10 days for the list to be cleared. Shivajinagar MLA Rizwan Arshad, who is also on the Parameshwara-led panel, expressed optimism that the impasse would end shortly. – Quote The list of chairpersons for boards and corporations, along with the list of names for members and directors, will be concluded soon. Congress finalises heads of 22 govt.-owned boards, corporations

Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and his deputy D.K. Shivakumar have reportedly finalised the names of 22 legislators and party leaders for the posts of chairperson of the government-owned boards and corporations. The names were finalised after a meeting with AICC general secretary in charge of Karnataka Randeep Singh Surjewala in Delhi on Thursday night. The list will be made public after a couple of days, party sources said. Equal preference Meanwhile, sources said both party MLAs and leaders had been given equal preference in the appointments. After Mr. Surjewala's meetings with Ministers and MLAs in Bengaluru, sources said the names suggested by Ministers/legislators had been given priority in the appointments. Till now, the government has appointed 42 legislators as chairpersons of various boards and corporations. However, directors and members of boards/corporations have not yet been appointed. Following the AICC general secretary's meeting with legislators, the government released ₹50 crore to each MLA for undertaking development works in their respective constituencies. Council seats Sources said candidates for the four vacant seats in the Karnataka Legislative Council had also not been finalised. The names would be finalised after senior leader Rahul Gandhi vets the list in August. Earlier in Delhi, Mr. Siddaramaiah participated in the 'Bhagidari Nyay Sammelan' of the other backward classes. Party leaders, including AICC chief Mallikarjun Kharge, Mr. Gandhi, K.C. Venugopal, and Anil Jaihind, participated in it.
