Horse racing tips – Friday March 7: Leicester

Telegraph07-03-2025

There are five horse racing meetings across the UK and Ireland today. Three National Hunt cards from Exeter (2.10-5.22pm), Leicester (2.20-5.02) and Ayr (2.30-5.10) make up the afternoon programme, followed by all-weather Flat fixtures at Dundalk (4.55-8.30) and Newcastle (5.15-8.15).
Our nap, Smart Casual, bids for victory in the penultimate race at Leicester after finishing in the first three in all of his chase runs.

4.28 Leicester – Handicap Chase (2m)
SMART CASUAL is today's pick and he can right the wrongs of his previous two runs, in both of which he was a beaten favourite.
The well-advertised form of his third-placed finish at Hereford in November earned him that status, multiple winners coming from that two-mile race. The first and fifth home – Paddy in the Caddy and Dunstall Rambler – fought out a tight finish yesterday at Wincanton off marks that were 10lb and 6lb higher respectively. However, Smart Casual remains on the same mark he had in November.
Trainer Anthony Honeyball fits the horse with new headgear today to encourage the win, having swerved another race yesterday to ensure regular rider Richie McLernon can ride the selection.
The favourite You Say Nothing is a danger here. He is 19lb below his penultimate winning mark despite recording another victory last time out, but at the age of 10 there's no guarantee he will be able to reproduce that level of run again.

Gloucestershire's inclusive cycling charity expands due to demand

A charity running inclusive cycling sessions for people with disabilities has expanded to accommodate its "growing community" of Beyond Grass (GBG) Bikes, run six weekly sessions throughout Gloucestershire, using adapted bicycles which cater to riders' various needs. With 2,000 people taking part in the last three months, they have extended their programme to include the track at the Prince of Wales Stadium in and events officer Will Alonso said that for many people, the sessions are their "only way of getting active", as adaptable bikes can cost up to £20,000. "Our main goal is to get everyone cycling," Mr Alonso said. "We will very rarely turn someone away, and if we have to, we will do our best to make sure next time they turn up they can cycle." The charity has "a growing fleet" of more than 50 adapted bikes with different features - such as a side-by-side bike to enable participants to pedal while their carers brake and steer. 'Beautiful' inclusivity Sally Clark, a support worker at Oakley Adult Day Centre, described the sessions as "beautiful". "I've never come to this session before but it's absolutely amazing, the bikes are wonderfully adapted. "The fitness aspect alongside community spirit and having a bit of a laugh, it's fantastic." Mr Alonso said as the sessions have progressed, club members have "turned into more of a community", offering advice and recommendations for other accessible pastimes."Some people will come along, cycle three laps, and are so happy to sit and talk with people like themselves," he said."You see little communities forming within our wider community of cyclists, which all get together to help each other."It's definitely one of the perks of the job. We see the best version of every one of our participants."

Troubled Cheltenham Festival-winning trainer banned for three months with immediate effect for ‘non-sporting offences'

David Cottin has been denied the right to appeal the verdict handed down by France Galop, according to Paris Turf. Sign up for Scottish Sun newsletter Sign up 1 Cheltenham Festival-winning trainer David Cottin has been hit with an immediate three-month ban that he has been blocked from appealing Credit: AFP Cottin, who was previously banned for 12 months (six suspended on condition of good behaviour) after horses in his yard failed drugs tests, cannot have another runner until late September. The French handler saddled the JP McManus-owned Easysland to Cross Country Chase success at the 2020 Festival. He was previously 'one of the most charismatic jockeys' before becoming a trainer and is son of famed French handler Philippe Cottin. The release confirming Cottin's ban did not state explicitly how he had breached the terms of his licence. French racing journalist Adrien Cugnasse told the Nick Luck Daily podcast earlier this year more on the 'sad story'. The reporter claimed Cottin was trying to buy Champagne at the bar at Auteuil but 'went crazy' when his card didn't work. He was then allegedly given a two-month ban from the racecourse after an argument with a bar worker. Cugnasse then went onto divulge unconfirmed reports of a 'street fight' involving Cottin. ‘A giant of the game' – Willie Mullins adds his tribute to Kevin Prendergast

Prendergast – son of the legendary Paddy 'Darkie' Prendergast – was a hugely popular and respected figure, landing the last of his Classic successes with Awtaad in the Irish 2,000 Guineas in 2016. 'I was sorry to hear about Kevin. He was a tremendous trainer, who always had a word for you,' said Mullins, the reigning champion National Hunt trainer in Ireland and Britain. 'He had an opinion on everything and that opinion was valued by people because he'd been through it, he knew the good days and he knew the bad days. 'He was a tremendous character who will be sadly missed. A proper giant of the game, he did the hard work and he knew everything about the game.' Former trainer Mick Halford, who now represents Joseph O'Brien on racecourses, said: 'Kevin was a master on the Curragh when I started. He was somebody I always looked up to, his horses were always a credit to him. 'He was a great man to talk to, a great man for advice, and for a bit of slagging! 'He was a lovely man and I had a lot of time for him, and he will be sadly missed on the Curragh. 'He led a full life, he was a great example to us all.'
