Carlos Alcaraz lifts the lid on Jannik Sinner rivalry and sends warning – 'He doesn't care'
Carlos Alcaraz has issued a warning to Jannik Sinner that he's gunning for his world number one crown, insisting the Wimbledon champion "doesn't care" about ranking points. The Spanish sensation became tennis ' youngest ever male number one in 2022 aged just 19 years, four months, and six days old, following his triumph at the US Open.
He occupied the summit for 20 weeks before being dethroned by Novak Djokovic after the Serbian's Australian Open victory in 2023. The 38-year-old subsequently surrendered the status to Sinner, who became the first Italian to claim the top ranking after his National Bank Open success in 2024.
The four-time Grand Slam winner has since maintained his grip on the position for 59 straight weeks - the lengthiest stretch this decade apart from Djokovic's reign, reports the Express.
Sinner boasts a massive 3,430-point advantage over Alcaraz in the ATP standings, yet the substantial deficit hasn't deterred the world number two in his quest to reclaim the pinnacle, which he's acknowledged as his primary objective.
Despite his Wimbledon final heartbreak, the 22-year-old has enjoyed a stellar 2025, capturing five trophies including his second straight French Open crown, where he pulled off a stunning comeback over Sinner.
set to kick off later this month, the Italian is bracing for a dip in his ranking as he stands to lose the 200 points he bagged during last year's quarter-final run.
Yet, Alcaraz has let slip that Sinner isn't sweating over defending his points, a mindset that could play into the Spaniard's hands as he aims to outpace his adversary.
"Yes, I'm ready," declared Alcaraz about topping the ATP rankings. "Last year, after the Olympic Games, I struggled and didn't achieve great results. So from now on, I won't have many points to defend until the end of the season. I'll give my all in the upcoming tournaments to win as many points as possible.
"I know Sinner doesn't care if he has lots of points to defend; he's a great fighter who always plays to win and doesn't let that affect him. But I'm ready for the challenge; right now, my main goal is to reclaim the number one spot in the rankings.
"Now I'm preparing for the American tournaments so that I can arrive at the US Open in top form," he continued. Despite their fierce battles on the tennis court, Alcaraz has nothing but respect for Sinner, highlighting the unique nature of their sport.
"Tennis is a unique sport that allows you to be great rivals on court and, at the same time, maintain mutual respect," he added. "We are good friends; we can talk about many things off court.
"I have great respect for him; he's a really nice person; I'm sure we'll always be able to maintain this good relationship." They're now gearing up for a comeback to the court at the Cincinnati Masters 1000 next month.
The event serves as the final precursor to the US Open, where Sinner will be defending his title. Prior to the singles tournament, the major has introduced a new edition of the mixed doubles event which includes nine of the world's top 10 women and nine of the world's top 10 men.

Naga Munchetty reacts to Lioness coverage saying Euro 2025 win was 'agonising'
The England Women's team won the Euros for the second successive time and Naga Munchetty has weighed in on their victory BBC Breakfast presenter Naga Munchetty has responded after the Lionesses successfully defended their European Championship title claimed at Wembley three years ago. Yesterday evening, the England women's football squad triumphed over Spain in Basel, Switzerland, following a dramatic penalty shoot-out. The squad is set to attend a celebration at Downing Street on Monday. After their triumph, England skipper Leah Williamson emphasised her determination to demonstrate that the 2022 Euros victory wouldn't be a "flash in the pan." The Lionesses are anticipated to stage a victory parade through central London on Tuesday this week, reports the Express. Commenting on their success, Naga turned to X and wrote: "Perfect. Just perfect. Painful. Agonising. But perfect. Back 2 back Champions #Lionessess #Euro2025." Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer declared on X: "You dug deep when it mattered most and you've made the nation proud. History makers." Ex-BBC Breakfast presenter Dan Walker shared on Instagram: "INCREDIBLE! ! ! What a team. What a moment for Hannah Hampton. Chloe Kelly... bonkers. Sarina Wiegman is such a leader. 3 Euros on the trot for her!" King Charles posted on social media: "For more years than I care to remember, England fans have sung that famous chant 'football's coming home'. "As you return home with the trophy you won at Wembley three years ago, it is a source of great pride that, through sporting skill and awesome teamwork, the Lionesses have made those words ring true. For this, you have my whole family's warmest appreciation and admiration." The King praised the Lionesses, saying: "Well done, Lionesses. The next task is to bring home the World Cup in 2027 if you possibly can." Sarina Wiegman, the gaffer of England Women's team, has a hat-trick of Euro tournament victories under her belt, including her 2017 triumph with the Netherlands. As per The Times, the telly audience for the Euros final, broadcast on both BBC and ITV, is predicted to be the biggest of 2025. However, the Beeb faced a backlash during the final as pundit Fara Williams was conspicuously absent from their coverage. The presenting squad included Gabby Logan and Alex Scott, with Steph Houghton, Ellen White, Jill Scott, Nedum Onouha, and Fran Kirby also popping up during the tournament. His post also featured several shocked-face emojis. BBC Breakfast airs every day on BBC One from 6am.

Touching moment Lucy Bronze consoles rumoured girlfriend and rival Ona Batlle
Lioness legend Lucy Bronze helped England clinch the Euro Cup on Sunday night, but despite their success, the defender made sure to comfort Spanish footballer Ona Batlle in an emotional moment The Lioness squad celebrated a triumphant victory on Sunday night, securing the Euro Cup for the second consecutive time. However, their win came as a crushing blow to Spain, which saw Ona Batlle comforted by England's Lucy Bronze amid rumours of their romance. In a thrilling penalty shootout against Spain, following an exhausting 120-minute final, the Lionesses emerged victorious. Mariona Caldentey initially put Spain ahead with a header in the 25th minute, but England's Alessia Russo equalised with a headed goal from Chloe Kelly's cross after half-time. During the nerve-wracking shootout, Lioness goalkeeper Hannah Hampton made a series of remarkable saves before Kelly stepped up to score the winning penalty following Sama Paralluelo's miss. Celebrations erupted across the Swiss stadium with 'Sweet Caroline' blasted through the speakers as the England squad soaked up their win. Lucy Bronze mum's powerful response when Lioness told 'You can't play football with boys' Lioness star Lucy Bronze's mysterious 'split' from teammate before baby bombshell But breaking away from celebrations with her team, defender Lucy Bronze was seen comforting Spanish footballer Ona Batlle. In a heartwarming moment, Bronze sat beside Batlle on the pitch, who was fighting tears over their defeat against England, and offered some emotional support. Later, Bronze sporting their gold winner's medal around her neck and Batlle having changed into her tracksuit, took a stroll around the stadium in another touching nod of support. Just a few years ago, the roles were reversed when Spain beat England during the women's World Cup final in 2023. After Spain took victory two years ago, Batlle was spotted consoling Bronze, who was in floods of tears on the sidelines. The Spanish player had her arms around a teary Bronze, who was sitting down wearing the iconic Lioness pink and blue coat from that year. Bronze and Batlle, who were previously teammates at Barcelona, appear to have struck up a close relationship over the years and have hinted at a possible romance. While neither of the pair has gone official, they have shared a series of cosy snaps together on social media. Just weeks before the Euros kicked off in Switzerland, Bronze and Batlle enjoyed a sun-soaked getaway together. In a series of photos shared on Instagram, Lucy wrote the caption: "Few days of sun," while Ona commented with a heart-eyed emoji. One snap from a trip saw the pair posing for a mirror selfie, where they look particularly close. They even took a trip to Disneyland Paris together in December last year, where they shared another sweet snap alongside each other. Bronze and Batlle are thought to have sparked up a close bond when they both played for Barcelona during the 2023-24 season. During this time, they won the Champions League, Liga F, the Spanish Cup, and the Spanish Super Cup together. Bronze moved back to Chelsea last summer as a right-back, while Batlle remains as a full-back for Barcelona. Sensationally, Bronze revealed that she played the 2025 Euro final with a fractured tibia. She revealed after the final match: "I've actually played the whole tournament with a fractured tibia but no one knew. Then I've just hurt my knee today on the other leg. "I think that's why I got a lot of praise from the girls after the Sweden game because I've been in a lot of pain, but that's what it takes to play for England." She added: "That's what I'll do. They know that, I think we inspire each other by playing through things like that, and they got us to the end of them in the end. It was very painful but I'm gonna party and gonna enjoy it, that's it." Last month, she opened up about her hopes of one day starting a family, saying it's the one thing she's "dying" to do. "My brother's got two kids and that's what I'm most jealous of, seeing my niece and nephew. But there's plenty of time for that – and what that looks like, I don't know," she told Women's Health.

England hero Chloe Kelly criticised for 'cocky gesture' during Euro 2025 final
England hero Chloe Kelly has been accused of making a 'cocky gesture' at the end of the dramatic Euro 2025 final penalty shootout against Spain. Arsenal forward Kelly struck England's winning penalty in Basel after the final finished 1-1 after extra-time. Pre-tournament favourites Spain took the lead midway through the first half through Mariona Caldentey but Alessia Russo equalised for the Lionesses just before the hour mark. England withstood plenty of Spain pressure in extra-time before winning the shootout 3-1, goalkeeper Hannah Hampton making two superb saves. Kelly scored the winner in the Euro 2022 final win and was England's hero again as she blasted her spot-kick past the helpless Cata Coll, who had saved two previous penalties. It was at that moment that Kelly made a 'cocky gesture', according to sections of the Spanish press, as she wheeled away in celebration in front of Coll. Kelly initially went to sprint to her right – in the opposite direction of the diving Coll – before quickly changing direction and running in front of the Spain goalkeeper. Coll gestured angrily at Kelly as she ran past but the England star paid little notice and was soon celebrating back-to-back European titles with her teammates. Kelly appeared to be focused on the celebrating England fans inside St Jakob-Park rather than her opponent but Spanish outlet AS nonetheless said it was a 'cocky' and 'unnecessary gesture'. 'This is unnecessary, my friend,' they wrote. 'Chloe Kelly's cocky gesture to Cata Coll after scoring the decisive penalty. 'The England specialist changed her run during her penalty celebration to get past the goalkeeper she had just beaten.' In a separate article, AS claimed Spain had been 'robbed' after losing a final they if not dominated at least were in control of for large periods. 'The dream ends in a nightmare,' one piece said. 'Spain lost the European Championship on penalties. England tied a match that Spain largely dominated. 'History is made by victories, and also by defeats. Spain fell in the Euro Cup final but left its name sealed in gold. England robbed them of their dream; the world champions couldn't close the circle they began to write two years ago in Sydney. 'They couldn't have been crueller in the penalty shootout, tossing a few dice in the air.' A separate piece from the Spanish outlet, which accused England of playing for penalties, added: 'England had been eliminated three times. To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video 'But they must have been using Houdini's secret manual of tricks to take home the trophy. Congratulations. 'The English embraced penalties like happy castaways, and it showed.' Spain manager Montse Tome was fairly magnanimous following her side's heartbreaking defeat and insisted she was 'proud' of the World Cup holders. 'It's a final and we are sad because we weren't able to win,' he said. 'I think the effort from all of the players was very good. 'They tried until the very end to try to win but then we arrived at a penalty shootout and we weren't able to do it. I thought overall we were very good on the ball. More Trending 'They are a team that play a lot on the second balls and they managed to hurt us a bit in these situations. 'I think in extra time we got the momentum back, got on the ball and were able to attack, but we were not able to avoid a penalty shootout and in the end we were not able to do that better. 'Now we have a strange feeling because we wanted to win so much. You have it so close and you are not able to do it. 'But I am always proud of the effort of the team and the staff that has been really positive. Now we have to stop and relax, and that is what I'm going to do.'
