Keir Starmer urged to introduce stricter eyesight testing rules for all drivers
Drivers may have to undergo eye tests to hold onto their licenses after Labour was ordered to introduce "mandatory vision checks' for all motorists, with older drivers told they should have to sit an eye test every three years.
The Association of Optometrists (AOP) had previously claimed the current rules around road vision checks are 'out of step' and were in need of a review.
Dr Peter Hampson, Optometrist and Clinical and Policy Director at the AOP, said they had been calling for tougher vision checks on UK roads.
As it stands drivers are only required to self-certify they are safe to drive to hold onto their driving licence, and are not legally obliged to undertake any assessments.
After similar remarks from the Older Drivers Forum and a leading coroner, the remarks pile more pressure on Sir Keir Starmer and the Government to react and change the rules.
Speaking exclusively to the Express, Peter said: 'The UK system around drivers vision is out of step with many other countries who instead use a full sight test to ensure vision meets the standard.
'In fact, within Europe, we are one of only five countries that uses a numberplate test and only one of three countries to rely on self-reporting.

'We have long called for mandatory vision checks at first licence application and at every renewal – every 10 years for most drivers, every three years for those over 70.
'With over 7,000 optometry practices nationwide, optometrists are well placed to support the delivery of these checks swiftly and effectively.'
Dr James Adeley stressed the UK system was the 'worst in Europe" as he looked into the deaths of four pedestrians killed by older drivers.
The Older Drivers Forum supports the introduction of compulsory eyesight checks to make sure road users getting behind the wheel are safe.
They said: 'The Forum recommend that all drivers have an optician's eyesight test at least every 2 years. Nearly 90% of driving is visual and we need good vision to see hazards and react to them.'
It was previously reported drivers who are aged 70 and over and have not renewed their licence are not 'legally allowed to drive', according to experts. That's because 90 days before drivers turn 70, they should receive a D46P application form from the DVLA.
Age UK stated that if a person's drivers licence expires and they are unable to apply for a new one within the timeframe then they are not legally allowed to get behind the wheel. The charity states: "Don't forget to apply for any extra categories of vehicle covered on your old licence if you still want to be able to drive them.

British Grand Prix: Silverstone boss wants better transport links

The co-driver was left hanging upside down and in agony seconds after his vehicle careered off the track, spun and flipped before hitting the tree. The 24-year-old, from Aberdeen, suffered a broken back and collar bone, but said a last second spin of the car prevented what would have been a fatal head-on collision. The other driver, Justin Gunning, walked away unscathed. The shocking accident unfolded during the Argyll Rally which saw cars race through Dunoon town centre on Friday, June 20. Emergency services rushed to the track near Ardtaraig around 10 miles from Dunoon. Remarkably the duo avoided a fireball disaster with the fuel tank and engine left intact. Dad-of-two, Michael told the Record: 'I'm very lucky to still be here. If the car hadn't spun we would have hit the tree head on and I don't either of us would have survived. 'I was knocked unconscious by the force. When I came to, I could feel that I was being crushed. My seat had been compressed and the back of the car had come down on us. 'The force had also snapped my seat in two. 'I just said to myself 'it's not my time'. All I could think about was getting out of the car. I knew I needed urgent help. Brave spectators ran over to haul Michael from the mangled Renault Clio Paramedics quickly arrived with an air ambulance sent to the scene. Michael was whisked to the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital in Glasgow where he was sent to the major trauma unit. He said: 'It was like something out of a TV show, but I was in the middle of it. 'I remember landing and the paramedic told me there was about to be a lot of commotion around me. 'I couldn't believe it when I went into the trauma centr e. There were doctors and nurses everywhere. 'I was just in shock at that point. I never thought doing the sport I love would end up like this.' Scans revealed that Michael had shattered two vertebrates in his back and broken his collar bone. Incredibly, he suffered no internal bleeding as a result of the horrendous accident which he puts down to the enhanced safety measures of the rally cars. He was given emergency surgery to fit metal plates in his back with doctors fearing he'd spend months in hospital. On Wednesday July 2, Michael returned home to partner Kirsty and their two sons Oscar-James, 2, and Noah-Flynn, 4. He shared a moving video of the moment he walked out from the hospital to his car supported by a back brace and using crutches. He said: 'The speed of my recovery has been nothing short of a miracle. "I was warned I could be in the hospital for months. I started properly walking again just a week after the crash. That was an emotional moment for me. I was just so determined to get home." 'I was in a critical condition 12 days ago, so to be able to walk out of the hospital is amazing. I was in tears. It was a really emotional moment for me. 'I shouldn't have been able to come home but I did. I think someone was watching over me that day." He added: 'All the team of doctors, surgeons and nurses were incredible. I can't thank everyone enough, from the on-site medics, air ambulance crew and spectators who helped. 'Everyone has just shown so much support and I'll never forget it.'

The Liverpool forward passed away on Thursday morning following a horror incident in Spain. A picture has emerged of the wreckage of Diogo Jota's Lamborghini after his fatal accident. The 28-year-old Liverpool forward passed away on Thursday morning following a horror incident in Spain. Pedro Proenca, the president of the Portuguese Football Federation, later confirmed that the Portugal international's brother, Andre, 26, also died in the accident. The news comes just under two weeks after Jota married his long-term girlfriend, Rute Cardoso, with whom he has three children. They tied the knot on June 22. As reported by the Mirror, a picture has now emerged from the incident showing the devastating wreckage by the side of the road. Medical personnel can be seen around the destroyed vehicle. Emergency services in the Castilla and Leon region confirmed the crash with a statement which read: "The 1-1-2 Castilla y León operations room received several calls reporting a vehicle accident at Km. 65 of the A-52, in the municipality of Cernadilla, Zamora. A car was reported to have been involved in an accident, and the vehicle was on fire. "1-1-2 notified the Zamora Traffic Police, the Zamora Provincial Council Fire Brigade, and the Sacyl Emergency Coordination Center (CCU) of this accident. From there, a Medical Emergency Unit (UME) and the Primary Care Medical Staff (MAP) from the Mombuey Health Center were sent, who confirmed the death of two people on the scene." According to El País, the fire damage from the crash prevented tests from being carried out to confirm that the two victims were Jota and his brother. Tributes have poured in for the Liverpool star and his brother. The Reds released a statement which read: "Liverpool Football Club are devastated by the tragic passing of Diogo Jota. The club have been informed the 28-year-old has passed away following a road traffic accident in Spain along with his brother, Andre. "Liverpool FC will be making no further comment at this time and request the privacy of Diogo and André's family, friends, teammates and club staff is respected as they try to come to terms with an unimaginable loss. We will continue to provide them with our full support."
