MP demands answers over travel chaos at Wimbledon

Glasgow Times03-07-2025
Paul Kohler, the Labour MP for Wimbledon, posted a letter to X on Wednesday addressed to the Commissioner of Transport for London, raising concerns about repeated issues on the District Line, including signal failures and a fire alert at Southfields – the station closest to the All England Club.
He said the problems had severely affected the journeys of residents, commuters and visitors, warning: 'Attendees are now being caught up in cancellations and delays.'
I'm acutely aware of ongoing issues with District Line services, affecting both my constituents & visitors during this busy period.
I've contacted TfL for urgent updates on recent issues & requested a meeting to discuss improving reliability of services in short & longer term. pic.twitter.com/sBIKGd15Zo

Mr Kohler said he had been told Wimbledon station was 'very crowded' on Tuesday and called on TfL to outline what extra support is in place to keep services running smoothly during the rest of the tournament.
On Thursday, Campaign group Save Wimbledon Park, which opposes the All England Club's expansion plans onto nearby parkland, said the tournament's impact on the local area goes beyond the grounds themselves.
'We love the tennis – we do,' the group posted on X.
'But there is a real cost to being taken over, even for just two weeks a year.
'Streets are closed, bus routes diverted, parking a nightmare, tube travel ridiculous and traffic at gridlock.'

A TfL spokesperson said: 'We apologise to customers affected by the disruption on the District line, which is due to a track fault at Tower Hill.
'Our engineers are working hard to rectify the fault as soon as possible and restore a good service.
'District line customers are advised to allow extra time for their journeys and to check before they travel using TfL Journey Planner or the TfL Go app.'
Despite the travel disruption earlier in the week, conditions have brightened up for day four of the Championships.
Sunshine and 24C temperatures returned to south-west London on Thursday, after rain caused delays and sent fans scrambling for umbrellas on Wednesday.
On Centre Court, Novak Djokovic continues his bid for an eighth Wimbledon title as he faces British number three Dan Evans in the second round.
World number eight Iga Swiatek also returns to action, taking on American qualifier Caty McNally.
Number One Court hosts men's top seed Jannik Sinner against Australia's Aleksandar Vukic, before teenage sensation Mirra Andreeva plays Italy's Lucia Bronzetti.
Maria Sakkari will meet 2022 champion Elena Rybakina later in the day, while British hope Jack Draper faces a tough test against former US Open winner Marin Cilic.

Katie Taylor and Amanda Serrano both suspended following trilogy fight

Katie Taylor and Amanda Serrano must now take a break from boxing following their third fight at Madison Square Garden, which again went the way of the Irish superstar Katie Taylor and Amanda Serrano have both been handed mandatory suspensions following their trilogy fight. The Irish icon, who had won the previous two meetings, won on a majority decision after a tactical battle at Madison Square Garden in New York. Two of the judges scored the bout 97-93 in Taylor's favour. The third judge was unable to split them after 10 tight rounds, scoring it 95-95. Taylor ruled out a fourth meeting with the Puerto Rican, but was cagey when asked whether she would continue to fight. ‌ She said: 'I don't know, I just don't want to fight Amanda Serrano again. She punches too hard. I have a huge ton of respect for Amanda, she's such a warrior. It's a pleasure to share a ring with her. We have made history three times. We are history makers forever. ‌ 'I thought I was boxing very smart, she wasn't able to catch me very much tonight. But it's always close against Amanda.' Serrano, who has suffered three of her four professional losses to Taylor, said she had tried to work 'smarter, not harder.' The 36-year-old said: 'We tried to stay with the long punches and one twos, and it just wasn't enough.' ‌ Both fighters will now enjoy a period of rest, the initial part of which is obligatory under the rules of the New York State Athletic Commission, which the fight fell under. The commission dictates they cannot fight again for at least seven days, which naturally wouldn't have occurred anyway. The rulebook states: 'No licensed professional combative sports participant shall be allowed to participate in any combative sport match or exhibition in this State until at least seven days have elapsed since his or her last match or exhibition.' It adds: 'And no licensed combative sports participant shall compete in any combative sport match or exhibition within seven days of competing in such a match or exhibition in this State.' ‌ The third meeting between the two was cagier than their previous clashes, simmering throughout with fewer punches landed. Neither fighter was able to impose themselves early on, with just three punches connecting in the opening round. With both fighters operating from more of a distance than their previous meetings, Taylor looked to control the centre of the ring and landed some good counter shots as she drew Serrano onto her. Several rounds could have gone either way as the fight built to a tense climax, Serrano coming forward more and forcing Taylor into a corner in the fifth round, but the champion fought her way out. Taylor was marked under the right eye in the eighth, but edged the final two rounds to secure the verdict. In the co-headline bout, American Alycia Baumgardner retained her undisputed super featherweight title with a unanimous decision over Spain's Jennifer Miranda.

'Jake Paul showed his true colours by badmouthing me when I was in a wheelchair'

'Jake Paul showed his true colours by badmouthing me when I was in a wheelchair' Eric 'Butterbean' Esch has been out of the ring since his 2013 loss to Kirk Lawton, but he is eyeing a return to action as he looks to settle the score with YouTube sensation Jake Paul Jake Paul has carved out a successful boxing career (Image: Getty Images ) Butterbean has issued a fierce warning to Jake Paul as he considers making his comeback to the boxing ring. The 58-year-old American hasn't fought since suffering a TKO defeat to Kirk Lawton in 2013. And in the years since, the fighter, whose real name is Eric Esch, has faced an entirely different challenge: battling his weight and morbid obesity. ‌ Butterbean's weight ballooned to a staggering 500lb – equivalent to 36.7 stone – at his peak, leaving him wheelchair-bound as medical professionals warned he might never regain the ability to walk. Throughout this period, Butterbean alleges that Paul "talked bad" about him, only to alter his stance now that the veteran has regained his fitness through an extraordinary physical transformation, shedding over 200lbs (15 stone). ‌ Speaking to Mirror Fighting this week through Lucky Energy, Butterbean said: "As soon as he says yes, I'm ready. You know, I was in really bad shape. I was in a wheelchair for over three years. I couldn't walk. I got over 500 pounds. I was fat and sloppy and couldn't walk, and Jake wanted to talk bad about me then. "So, I decided to get my fat butt in shape. And guess what I did? I'm 280 right now, 285. I've never been under 300 in my life that I know of. And now that I'm ready, he's like, 'Well, dude, you're a legend. I can't fight you right now.' Yeah, buddy. Let's get it going." When asked about his confidence in potentially ending Paul's boxing career, he added: "I don't think he's afraid of me, but I think his people know that if he gets knocked out, his career's over. Like, I would knock him out bad. I hit way too hard for him." Article continues below Butterbean even described a potential bout with Paul as "one of the best fights of the year", as he claimed: "I hit too hard for Jake. Needless to say, Jake was a joke in the beginning. Just another YouTuber out there trying to prove a point. Butterbean has a message for Jake Paul (Image: 2012 The Ring Magazine ) "He's got a lot better... so I wouldn't mind sharing the ring just to fight him. Not just to shut him out because I think he was worthless, but he kind of p***ed me off." ‌ Butterbean attributes his significant weight loss to WWE legend 'Diamond' Dallas Page and his intensive yoga regimen, noting that at 58, he feels fitter than during his boxing heyday in his twenties. He said: "I'm not in a wheelchair no more. "I went and moved to DDP for a while, did his yoga programme, and I'm in the best shape of my life right now. I feel better now at 50-something than I did when I was in my 20s, which is insane. I can't explain it, but the Fountain of Youth, I dove in it and I come out so much better." Paul, on the other hand, has seen a meteoric rise since launching his professional boxing career with a first-round TKO against fellow YouTuber AnEsonGib in January 2020. Subsequent victories included knockouts of Nate Robinson and wins over seasoned UFC stars Ben Askren, Tyron Woodley and Anderson Silva. ‌ Butterbean hopes to fight Jake Paul (Image: ADRIAN DENNIS, AFP via Getty Images ) However, he experienced his first career defeat in February 2023, losing to Tommy Fury via split decision. Despite this setback, Paul bounced back with wins over notable opponents such as Nate Diaz, Andre Augustm, Ryan Bourland and Mike Perry. Last November, Paul faced what was touted as the most significant fight of his career, squaring off against former heavyweight world champion Mike Tyson, despite a 30-year age gap. Paul emerged victorious from that bout, winning by unanimous decision. Article continues below He followed this up with another win last month against Julio Cesar Chavez Jr, also by unanimous decision, improving his record to 12-1. As for his next opponent, it remains uncertain, although Butterbean is hopeful of enticing Paul into a lucrative match, despite ongoing rumours of a rematch with Fury. Butterbean has just launched a brand-new flavour of beverage with Lucky Energy in his Butterbean's Knockout Punch. The brand describes the fresh taste as "a tropical mix of pineapple, orange, cherry, with a heavy kick of nostalgia fruit punch." Butterbean spoke as part of his collaboration with Lucky Energy. You can find out more about his brand-new Butterbean's Knockout Punch flavour here.

Kate Middleton forced into Roger Federer intervention and broke Royal protocol with kisses

Kate Middleton forced into Roger Federer intervention and broke Royal protocol with kisses Princess Kate and tennis icon Roger Federer have crossed paths countless times at Wimbledon, capturing the imagination of fans with their meetings on and off the court Roger Federer has formed a close bond with the Middleton family, including the Princess of Wales (Image: Thomas Lovelock - AELTC via Getty Images ) Princess Kate and tennis legend Roger Federer have developed a friendship through their numerous encounters at Wimbledon over the years. As this Swiss icon approaches his third year of retirement, he now joins Her Royal Highness in the stands, rather than entertaining the crowd on the court. She was present to witness him secure a record-breaking eighth men's singles title in 2017, alongside her husband William. ‌ After his triumph over Croatian Marin Cilic, the Prince and Princess of Wales were spotted congratulating Federer. Kate surprised Royal enthusiasts by breaking protocol and giving him three kisses instead of the customary one or two. ‌ One theory suggests it was because in Federer's homeland, it's traditional to greet friends with three pecks. Two years later, Kate returned to SW19 to watch Federer once more. This time, she was offering her sympathies rather than congratulations when presenting him with his runner-up trophy following his five-set thriller against Novak Djokovic. Their 2023 meeting truly captured the public's imagination. By then, Federer had retired from his illustrious career and was attending Centre Court as a dedicated fan for the first time. He arrived to sit next to Kate in the Royal Box for Elena Rybakina's victory over Shelby Rogers, receiving a standing ovation worthy of his iconic status at the All England Club. Article continues below However, the applause went on for so long that Kate had to take charge of the situation. Former British No. 1 and BBC commentator John Lloyd said: "The Princess of Wales had to give him a little nudge and tell him to sit down. It could have been another hour before we even started the match. It was great. Absolutely fantastic." Kate's trio of kisses for Federer broke royal protocol (Image: YouTube/GameJester ) As they enjoyed the match together, Federer was mindful of maintaining decorum, later expressing: "It was so fun sitting next to Princess Catherine. I know her quite well. ‌ "She is an avid tennis fan, and she plays herself. Sometimes we have to be careful we don't speak too much. You can talk, and then it's super quiet, and then you have to applaud." Kate has joined forces with Federer on various tennis-related endeavours, including showcasing the work of Wimbledon's ball boys and girls. She tried her hand at the role, impressively catching a ball without letting it bounce. Federer enjoyed his lengthy chat with tennis enthusiast Kate (Image: Karwai Tang, WireImagevia Getty Images ) Article continues below However, Federer pointed out that she was in fact meant to let it hit the floor first. He told her: "In Australia they would catch it but here in Wimbledon they don't." His ties with the Middleton family go further than just Kate; he previously imparted some tennis wisdom to Prince George on the courts and was in attendance at Pippa Middleton's wedding to James Matthews in 2017, following Pippa's interview with him for Vanity Fair in 2013. Their mum Carole is an especially avid admirer, a fact not lost on the Princess of Wales, who has mentioned: "Roger is my mother's heartthrob. I don't think she will mind me saying that! I think he probably knows that too."
