Anger at ‘miracle' recovery of fans in disabled area at Oasis gig

Times2 days ago
A disabled Oasis fan has described the 'biblical' moment when seemingly wheelchair-bound concertgoers stood up and danced, amid fears that tickets for the disabled area had been resold to able-bodied concertgoers.
Mark Chapman, 32, said that he had seen fans at Heaton Park in Manchester abandon their crutches and wheelchairs on the accessible platform when the Gallagher brothers took to the stage. He believes that fans desperate to secure tickets for the band's reunion tour had purchased tickets meant for those with genuine disabilities from online resellers.
In a social media post after the concert, Chapman, who was diagnosed with Duchenne muscular dystrophy when he was five years old, wrote: 'The behaviour of some attendees was unacceptable as they clearly weren't disabled.
'They were literally just standing for the whole time, they kept leaving the [accessible] platform and joining their friends in front of the platform and leaving their wheelchairs behind and crutches behind, and [again] when they went to the toilet.
'It's really frustrating. I could see people in front of the platform who were clearly struggling who had to stand there without a seat, and there were people on the platform who didn't need to be there.'
Accessible area tickets for the show were available on the secondary resale site Viagogo for £634 each and were sold in pairs, according to reports.

Chapman himself struggled to get tickets for the accessible area and ultimately had to buy standard tickets for himself and his carer Sam Priest, who would normally be given a companion ticket free of charge if booked officially.
Chapman, a podcaster, said: 'There were loads of people in wheelchairs and with crutches, but when Oasis came on they all jumped out their wheelchairs and dropped their crutches and stood up for the whole gig for two hours.
'Me being quite severely disabled, I know that standing up for two hours is very, very unlikely.'
Priest added: 'We were joking Jesus Christ must have been on the platforms, there were so many miracles performed that night.'
Chapman, of Wilmslow in Cheshire, was later able to get a refund for Priest's ticket after he contacted organisers to explain the situation and had to join a waiting list to enter the raised accessible area on the day itself.

List of prohibited items for Murrayfield as countdown to Oasis continues

Oasis are to take to the Edinburgh stage for three nights in August. The countdown to the Gallagher's much-anticipated gigs at Edinburgh's Murrayfield Stadium is officially underway, with just over two weeks to go until Oasis take the Scottish stage for the first time in 15 years. And with over 67,000 fans attending each of the three nights, which take place on August 8, 9 and 12, it's definitely time to start planning what to bring and how to get there. We've covered public transport options and road closures, but another important thing to consider is what you're planning on bringing into the stadium. Murrayfield has strict rules on what you can and cannot bring into the concert venue, so it's a good idea to familiarise yourself with them ahead of the event. Security staff will be searching every single fan on entry, so it's vital you don't bring any contraband which could get confiscated or cause delays at the gate. Here's everything you need to know about which items you're allowed to take into the Edinburgh Oasis concerts, and which will see you held up by security. Which items are prohibited from Murrayfield Stadium? A number of items are banned from Murrayfield, including: Bags larger than A4 (30cm x 21cm) Only bags smaller than an A4 sheet of paper are allowed into the gig. There is also no bag drop policy, so be wary not to break this rule or your bag may be confiscated. However, bags required to carry medical or childcare items are an exception, and those with these bags are to enter via the dedicated turnstiles. Knives or weapons Possession of any dangerous or hazardous items may constitute a criminal offence and will be reported to Police Scotland. Food or drink All food and drink from outside the venue is prohibited from taking in on entry. Exceptions include an unopened soft plastic water bottle of no bigger than 500ml, or an empty collapsible water bottle of the same size which you can refill in the venue. If you don't already have a collapsible water bottle, some cheap options are available, such as this one from Amazon, which retails at £9.99. Alternatively, this Decathlon option from Argos is available for £12. Flasks and hard water bottles Hard water bottles and hip flasks, as well as thermos flasks and metal drinks containers are all banned from Murrayfield. If you arrive with one of these, you will be required to bin it upon entry. Fireworks, flares and smoke bombs Possession of fireworks, smoke bombs, flares or other pyrotechnic items will result in a report to Police Scotland as they may constitute a criminal offence. Banners or flags which contain offensive or abusive slogans Banners or flags with statements that may be considered racist, homophobic, political or discriminatory will also be confiscated. Small flags and banners are permitted but the venue says that any flag or banner, irrelevant of content, which is larger than 12inches x 16inches (30cm x 41cm) with poles longer than 1m in length, or thicker than one inch (2.5cm) will not be permitted into the stadium. Musical instruments Don't bring your guitar expecting to be invited up on stage for Wonderwall- only the band are allowed to bring their instruments. Umbrellas of any size Scotland may be rainy, but you'll need a rain jacket or waterproof poncho as your umbrella won't make it through the Murrayfield gates. Laser pointers and torches Don't bring a torch or laser pointer. Air horns, party poppers and silly string are also prohibited. Animals All animals except guide dogs are forbidden, and those bringing an assistance dog should make Customer Services aware ahead of the gig. Large cameras Cameras with a lens of more than three inches or with a detachable lens aren't allowed either, and it must be possible for any camera you're bringing in to fit comfortably into a pocket or bag. Audio recording equipment This includes laptops and iPads. Tripods and selfie sticks You may want to record moments of the upcoming concerts, but gig goers shouldn't bring any large equipment with them, including selfie sticks or tripods. Ozzy Osbourne's bandmates and fans pay tribute: ‘You're forever in my heart'

Black Sabbath fans, musicians and former bandmates have remembered Ozzy Osbourne following his death with messages including one of thanks to him for 'bringing Birmingham together'. The music superstar's death at the age of 76 was announced in a statement to the PA news agency saying he was 'with his family and surrounded by love'. Advertisement His Black Sabbath band mates – Terence 'Geezer' Butler, Tony Iommi and Bill Ward – led tributes to Osbourne alongside fans from his home city of Birmingham, where he had taken to the stage as part of a reunion concert just weeks earlier. Black Sabbath co-founder Iommi said it was 'brilliant' to reunite with the band before Osbourne died, saying the singer 'really wanted' to perform together again and 'felt at home'. He told BBC Radio 4's Today programme: 'It is really a shock. It's really hit me today to be honest, but yeah, a terrible shock.' On their reunion concert two weeks ago, Iommi said: 'It was brilliant to be with all the guys again… and it was brilliant for Ozzy because he really wanted to do that, you know, he felt at home there and it was really good for him. Advertisement 'It was good for all of us, and lovely to be able to get together for a final thing. I mean, we didn't realise it was going to be this final.' Earlier this month, Osbourne took to the stage as part of the Black Sabbath reunion, telling thousands of heavy metal enthusiasts at Villa Park – a stone's throw from where the band was formed in 1968 – that it was 'so good to be on this stage' as he performed his last set from a large black throne. Bassist Geezer Butler, drummer Bill Ward, singer Ozzy Osbourne and guitarist Tony Iommi formed Black Sabbath in the 1960s (Ian West/PA) Osbourne and his fellow original Black Sabbath members were the last to appear as part of the star-studded line-up for the Back to the Beginning concert. The band's bassist, Butler said he is 'so glad' the band reunited with Osbourne one final time as he paid tribute to his long-time bandmate and friend, reflecting on their final performance together. Advertisement 'Thanks for all those years – we had some great fun. 4 kids from Aston – who'd have thought, eh?' he captioned an Instagram post. 'So glad we got to do it one last time, back in Aston. Love you.' Ward, Black Sabbath's drummer, posted a photo of himself and Osbourne on X, writing: 'Where will I find you now? In the memories, our unspoken embraces, our missed phone calls… no, you're forever in my heart.' Fans left tributes thanking Osbourne for 'bringing Birmingham together' at the scene of a mural honouring the band in the city. Advertisement Dozens of bunches of flowers, candles and cards were left underneath Osbourne's picture on the Navigation Street mural. One tribute said: 'There are no words, truly. Thank you for everything, for all the music, for the endless and timeless discography. 'You have touched millions, my whole life your music has played almost as if raising me. 'You've gave my family memories, a history of them, even recently at your last gig you bought us so much happiness, it's unreal.' Advertisement Another simply read: 'Thank you for bringing Birmingham together Ozzy.' Floral tributes were left by the Sabbath Wall on Navigation Street in Birmingham, following the death of Black Sabbath frontman Ozzy Osbourne aged 76 (Jacob King/PA) The producers and director of upcoming documentary Ozzy Osbourne: No Escape From Now, which began filming in early 2022 during the rocker's recording sessions for his 13th studio album, and is set to air on Paramount+ later this year, also paid tribute to Osbourne. Directed by Bafta award-winner Tania Alexander, the documentary is being produced by UK production house Echo Velvet in partnership with the Osbournes and MTV Entertainment Studios, with Phil Alexander one of the executive producers. A statement from Tania and Phil Alexander, on behalf of Echo Velvet, said: 'We are truly heartbroken to hear the news of Ozzy's passing. 'Filming with him, Sharon, Aimee, Kelly and Jack for the last three-and-a-half years will always be a cherished and remarkable experience – largely because we got to regularly witness Ozzy's indomitable spirit, his mischievous, irresistible grin and his masterful display of unique one-liners.' Black Sabbath went on to become one of the most influential and successful metal bands of all time, selling more than 75 million albums worldwide, with hit songs including Paranoid, Changes and Iron Man. Many from around the showbusiness world paid tribute to Osbourne and his family (Ian West/PA) The group were inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2006 and Osbourne was added for a second time last year. He rose to further fame alongside his wife Sharon – whom he married in 1982 and with whom he has three children, Aimee, Jack and Kelly – through their MTV reality TV series The Osbournes. In 2020, Osbourne revealed he had been diagnosed with Parkinson's disease, telling Good Morning America that it was discovered he had the neurodegenerative disorder after a fall. He said: 'I did my last show New Year's Eve at The Forum. Then I had a bad fall. I had to have surgery on my neck, which screwed all my nerves and I found out that I have a mild form.' He released his 12th studio album Ordinary Man in 2020, followed by Patient Number 9 in 2022, which went to number three and two in the UK charts, respectively. A family statement released on Tuesday night said: 'It is with more sadness than mere words can convey that we have to report that our beloved Ozzy Osbourne has passed away this morning. He was with his family and surrounded by love. We ask everyone to respect our family privacy at this time.'
