‘Pretty stupid': Man in court over Albo threats
Dale Byrne, 42, faces two Commonwealth charges related to threatening to cause 'serious harm' to the Prime Minister and making a 'menacing' social media post about the political leader.
Mr Byrne didn't enters any pleas during a brief hearing in the Dandenong Magistrates' Court on Thursday, and the matter was listed for a contest mention hearing in September.
Outside court, Mr Byrne told NewsWire: 'I haven't got much to say because I haven't got my solicitor here, except I said something pretty stupid I shouldn't have said.'
He would not comment when asked if he would plead guilty. The most serious charge carries a maximum sentence of seven years in prison.
In Thursday's court hearing, magistrate Nunzio La Rosa continued Mr Byrne's bail, which includes the condition not to go within 100m of state or federal politicians, including Mr Albanese.
Mr La Rosa scheduled the matter to be called again at a contest mention on September 4.
Court documents show Mr Byrne is charged with threatening 'to cause serious harm to a Commonwealth Official, namely Australian Prime Minister, the Honourable Anthony Albanese' on February 7.
The second charge alleges Mr Byrne used a carriage service 'in a manner that a reasonable person would regard as menacing' when he made an X post 'towards' Mr Albanese.
The charges are under negotiation.
Initially, the Australian Federal Police alleged Mr Byrne made death threats and anti-Semitic comments to a Commonwealth member of parliament.
'The AFP will allege the man used social media to contact a Commonwealth MP multiple times between 7 January, 2025, and 19 February, 2025, making death threats and anti-Semitic comments,' it said at the time he was charged on March 18.
The state of the charges or details of the allegations were not aired in court on Thursday.

'Change agent': Charlamagne tha God floats Jon Stewart as possible 2028 candidate
WASHINGTON - Radio show host Charlamagne tha God suggested that comedian Jon Stewart should run for president in 2028, after questioning a possible run for president again by former Vice President Kamala Harris. His comments come after Harris said she won't run for California governor, leaving the door open for a potential 2028 run. In an interview set to publish Aug. 2, Charlamagne told Fox News' Lara Trump, daughter-in-law of President Donald Trump, that Stewart would be a 'change agent coming from the outside' that would 'shake things up.' Stewart has been critical of Donald Trump's policies and holds progressive viewpoints. He's been a vocal advocate of improving healthcare access for veterans and first responders. He anchored Comedy Central's The Daily Show from 1999 to 2015, and later returned as a part-time host in 2024. 'We've seen him get legislation and stuff, you know, passed before, like we know where his heart is. He'd be somebody I'd like to see really get in the race and disrupt things in 2028,' Charlamagne told Lara Trump. Charlamagne, co-host of The Breakfast Club, said in an episode of his show on July 31 that he doesn't know if Harris should run again in 2028. 'I definitely would like to see her write a book. I definitely would like to see her start a podcast and just build a real connection with people,' he said. Harris said on July 30 that her leadership and public service "will not be in elected office" for now. Harris is currently writing a book, two people with knowledge of her plans said, and is expected to go on tour. Lee promises transparency if elected Davenport mayor
It looks likely there won't be a primary for Davenport's mayoral race. There's enough time left for that to change, but as long as there are only these two candidates in the race, no primary. They are Jason Gordon and Judith Lee. The mayor's race will be decided in the general election on Nov. 4 if this holds. We introduced you to Jason Gordon a couple of weeks ago. We will get to know Judith Lee a little better now. She was born and raised in Webster, Massachussetts, got a Bachelor's degree in wildlife management fron the University of Maine, then a Master's degree in wildlife biology from Utah State University. Judith Lee spent her professional career as an ecologist, researcher and environmental planner working for the federal government and state governments in Maine, New York, Idaho and Utah. She's currently an environmental consultant as the president of her compant called Environmental Planning Strategies with clients across the country. Lee also has experience holding elected office. She served two terms as Davenport's eighth ward alderman from 2020 to 2023. Judith Lee hopes she's the one who will claim victory as Davenport's next mayor on election night. That's about three months away. She joins host Jim Niedelman for a conversation. 'I know the issues that's been happening over the last five years,' Lee said.
