Baghdad - INA
Minister of Transport Razzaq Muhaibis Al-Saadawi confirmed today, Wednesday, that Iraq is a distinguished international corridor for the countries of the region.
A statement by the ministry received by the Iraqi News Agency (INA) stated: "Minister of Transport Razzaq Muhaibis Al-Saadawi met with the Secretary-General of the International Road Transport Union, Umberto de Pretto, to discuss the TIR project and ways to facilitate the inter-trade process, which is one of the most important drivers of the global economy."
The statement added, "At the beginning of the meeting, which was attended by the head of the Parliamentary Transport and Communications Committee, Zahra Al-Bajari, and the Director General of Passengers and Delegations, Karim Kazem Hussein, the Minister expressed his thanks to the delegation of the International Road Transport Union, which included the Secretary-General of the Union, Umberto de Brito, the Director of Strategic Development, Vincent Erard, the Director of International Road Transport Services (TIR), Tatiana Re-Bellet, and the Union's Middle East Affairs Advisor, Rami Qarout, for their support for Iraq's accession procedures to the TIR Agreement, while he extended an invitation to the delegation to visit Baghdad and discuss joint cooperation."
Al-Saadawi stressed - according to the statement - that "the Iraqi government, specifically the Ministry of Transport, is keen on the TIR project, as it is an important project at the level of international trade movement, and it is also reflected in the economies of the member states," noting that "Iraq enjoys a strategic location linking the East and the West, and therefore it is a distinctive international corridor for the countries of the region." He stressed Iraq's keenness to "implement the requirements of the agreement, in conjunction with the ongoing work on the development road project, which we seek to be one of the best global corridors for transporting goods, as it will be the least expensive and safest."
In turn, Secretary-General Umberto de Pretto expressed his "thanks for the efforts of the Iraqi government to complete Iraq's accession to the International Land Union," considering that "approval for the passage of vehicles through Iraq is very important."
He stressed that "expediting this process makes things better, adding that this project opens up broad horizons for Iraq," noting that "TIR facilitates the trade process by 50%, and ensures the passage of vehicles with ease, and the benefits resulting from it are greater, in light of the existence of enormous capabilities that enhance this."
At the end of the meeting, the President of the International Union expressed his "admiration for the topics raised on the discussion table, especially the issue of the international visa, and the possibility of benefiting from Iraqi expertise in the success and organization of the TIR work system."
It is noteworthy that the Minister of Transport, Razzaq Muhaibis Al-Saadawi, participated yesterday, Tuesday, in the work of the 87th session of the Inland Transport Committee (ITC) held in Geneva; where he delivered Iraq's speech, in which he reviewed the government's projects regarding ways to enhance sustainable connectivity for regional inland transport, and enhance climate action for inland transport, which includes establishing concepts of climate justice, to reduce carbon emissions.

KRG delegation arrives in Baghdad amid efforts to resolve financial disputes

Also in Iraq Iraq's Victory Coalition to skip election Iraq's marshlands are drying up Sistani rep warns Iraqis to remain vigilant despite Iran-Israel truce Two Iraqi delegations to arrive in Erbil to resolve financial disputes with KRG A+ A- ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - A high-level delegation from the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) arrived in Baghdad on Saturday to hold talks with the federal officials as both governments have intensified efforts to resolve their financial disputes, according to a lawmaker, who expressed his optimism that a deal could be reached soon. A technical delegation from the Iraqi government arrived in Erbil last week to pave the way for a visit by a high-profile delegation from Baghdad to the Kurdish capital. The technical team has held continuous meetings with senior officials of the Kurdistan Region. The meetings have been positive and good,' Sherwan Dubardani, a Kurdish member at the Iraqi parliament, told Rudaw on Saturday. A Kurdish delegation headed by Kamal Mohammed, the Kurdistan Regional Government's (KRG) acting natural resources minister, are set to meet with the federal oil minister and Iraq's State Oil Marketing Organization (SOMO) to discuss the continuation of the Region's oil exports. 'With great probability, this week the issue of oil exports and employees' salaries will be resolved,' Dubardani said. The Iraqi government has paid the KRG's share from the federal budget for only the first four months of this year. This has crippled the Kurdish region's economy as it has more than a million civil servants. Oil exports through the Iraq-Turkey pipeline have been halted since March 2023, following a ruling by a Paris-based arbitration court that found Ankara had violated a 1973 pipeline agreement by allowing Erbil to export oil independently. Officials in both Erbil and Baghdad say the halt has cost more than $24 billion in lost revenues. On May 26, a technical team from the Iraqi finance ministry, oil ministry, and the Federal Financial Supervision Bureau (FFSB) arrived in Erbil. According to Dubardani, Saturday's meeting in Baghdad marked a continuation of those discussions. Tensions between Erbil and Baghdad escalated in late May when the federal finance ministry suspended all budget transfers to the KRG, citing that the Region had exceeded its 12.67 percent share of the 2025 federal budget. Kurdish parties denounced the decision as politically motivated and unconstitutional. At a press conference attended by Rudaw, KRG Prime Minister Masrour Barzani said salaries of Kurdistan Region employees should not be tied to political disputes with Baghdad. He called the budget freeze 'unconstitutional' and said salaries 'were cut illegally.' He also said that a top Iraqi delegation will arrive in Erbil to resolve the disputes. Rudaw has learned that the delegation will visit Erbil on Monday. The timing of the federal government's decision coincided with the KRG's signing of two major energy deals with US companies, worth a combined $110 billion over their lifespans. Baghdad rejected the deals as illegal, arguing that all energy contracts must go through federal authorities.

Iraq tries to assert state authority during crisis The Iraqi government has long navigated a path between maintaining political ties with its Iranian neighbor and Tehran's allies inside Iraq on the one hand, and preserving its security relationship with the United States on the other. Unsurprisingly, it quickly welcomed US President Donald Trump's June 23 Israel-Iran cease-fire agreement. Click here to read the full article.

Iraq's intelligence denies sectarian killing of citizen in Syria

Shafaq News – Baghdad On Saturday, Iraq's National Intelligence Service (INIS) dismissed claims that an Iraqi citizen was killed due to sectarian motives in Syria. In a statement, the agency announced it had investigated social media reports alleging the killing of an Iraqi national in Damascus's Sayyida Zainab district, clarifying that the man had died of a heart attack. INIS urged social media users to verify information and rely on official sources to avoid inflaming public sentiment. Sayyida Zainab, a district near Damascus, hosts a major Shiite shrine and attracts large numbers of pilgrims. Claims of sectarian violence in the area often draw public attention due to its religious significance and its history during the Syrian war.
