FIRST-HALF goals from Sam Glenfield and Tommy Lonergan steered Waterford FC to bragging rights over Cork City in their SSE Airtricity Men's Premier Division Munster derby clash at a sun-drenched RSC.
Goalkeeper Stephen McMullan returned to the starting team with a man-of-the-match display, producing a couple of outstanding saves to keep the bottom side in the division at bay.
The Waterford stopper denied Kitt Nelson and Cathal O'Sullivan as Glenfield's stunner and Lonergan's super header moved the Blues up to seventh spot in the division.
After Ryan Burke went close when heading Conan Noonan's right-wing corner inches wide, the Blues were celebrating striking the front eight minutes later.

Defender Fiacre Kelleher tried to play a short clearance to Evan McLaughlin, who looked to have been fouled when dispossessed by Sam Glenfield, and he arrowed an unstoppable right-footed shot from 20 yards past David Odumosu.
Malik Dijksteel ghosted past three tackles out on the left with considerable ease moments later, only to see his effort trickle inches wide of McMullan's far post.
Tommy Lonergan then should have had a penalty when replays showed he was onside when hacked down by Odumosu.
The striker was celebrating doubling the Blues' lead three minutes later. Padraig Amond laid the ball back to Grant Horton, who put in a superb ball. Lonergan produced an instinctive header that saw it loop over the head of the Cork netminder.
McMullan maintained his side's two-goal cushion with a brilliant double save just before the break. He first got down low to save a 25-yarder from Nelson before getting the faintest of touches to turn an Evan McLaughlin effort onto the crossbar.
McMullan had to be at his best again on the hour mark for the Blues when Nelson turned provider for O'Sullivan, but the teenager's left-footed strike was tipped over the crossbar.
Charlie Lutz was also denied by the Blues' netminder after cutting in from the left.
But from that point on, the expected late Cork rally never materialised, as the hosts saw the game out with ease.

'We must wrestle the game from Cork' - Sligo seeking to push City further towards abyss

Sligo Rovers expect to face the equivalent of a 12th man when visiting Turner's Cross on Friday for what's a must-win game for Cork City. Another defeat for basement side City would create a 11-point gap to chase Sligo in the playoff spot with just 11 games remaining. Sligo were the team propping up the table until five weeks ago. They've won two and drawn two of their last four league matches, whereas the Rebels are winless in 13 Premier outings. "This is a huge game for both teams", said Sligo boss John Russell, himself returning from illness after missing Friday's 2-0 FAI Cup win at First Division leaders Dundalk. "I expect Cork will have a huge crowd out to get behind them. As I said earlier in the season, Turner's Cross is a tough place to go and even tougher when the crowd's back is up. It's akin to playing against 12 men. 'They're scrapping for their lives and will see this a must win and we need to be prepared for an onslaught. 'We need to be able to wrestle the game from them and dictate the play. "We're only a few points ahead of them and we are still trying to catch the teams above us. We are looking up but we need to make sure we pick up results in these sorts of games and add a real buffer between ourselves and that bottom spot. There's no better way to do that than by getting a result in Cork on Friday. "The game is live on television too so that'll add something to the event and hopefully we'll have a big crowd coming down to get behind us.' Russell has bolstered his squad with the loan captures of James McManus (Bohemians) and Ryan McManus (Shelbourne), along with experienced Patrick McClean returning to the club and Sean Stewart, also from the Northern Irish league. "We're unbeaten now in five and really pleased with how things have gone the last few weeks,' added the Sligo boss. 'However, we must keep the momentum going and keep things ticking over in Cork. We're in the midst of a busy period now and the players and staff are really enjoying it. 'We have turned things around somewhat but I knew we always had that in us. We need to keep this going and keep bringing our levels up.' Friday's LOI Fixtures (All 7.45pm) Premier Division: Cork City v Sligo Rovers, Turner's Cross (Live Virgin Media); Derry City v Bohemians, Ryan McBride Brandywell; Galway United v Waterford, Eamonn Deacy Park. First Division: Athlone Town v Treaty United, Athlone Town Stadium; Dundalk v Wexford, Oriel Park; Finn Harps v Cobh Ramblers, Finn Park; Kerry v UCD, Mounthawk Park. Saturday: Longford Town v Bray Wanderers, Bishopsgate (7.30pm).

'We will do everything to stop that from happening' - Saoirse McCarthy hopes Cork camogie learns from hurlers loss

Saoirse McCarthy was a Cork hurling supporter on Sunday. She's been that fallen red soldier on All-Ireland final day. Her most recent experience of final heartbreak was 2022. Sunday at Croker was a reminder to never again visit that space. 'Feel so sorry for the boys and it is very hard to pick themselves up after this, but hopefully they will. "It was very hard to watch as a Cork supporter, you want them to do well, and yeah, you look at them and you say, I really hope that doesn't happen to us and we will do everything in our power to stop that from happening,' said the three-in-a-row Camogie All-Star. Unlike the men, the Cork women are chasing no famine-ending result. They are instead chasing a three-in-a-row of All-Irelands. To get back to their own concluding day, Waterford must be worked past this Saturday at UPMC Nowlan Park (5pm). Following on from their 11-point League final win over Galway in April, Cork have been untouchable in the championship to date. Four outings, four facile wins. Their smallest winning margin was nine points, their largest was 38. Fourteen goals across those four group strolls, and yet McCarthy speaks of a collective neither satisfied nor sated. 'We want to have a full 60-minute performance, we haven't had that yet. Played for 40 minutes, or thereabouts, but a full 60 minutes would be lovely.' The game where they came closest, she digs out, was last year's All-Ireland final triumph. And even within that, they were hit for a third quarter six-in-a-row as Galway pulled up level. 'A great game, Galway really put it up to us. We had to come out and really stand up to that test. It's probably the biggest test we have had in the last couple of years. 'Galway came out of the traps and decided they weren't going to let us walk away with it. We reacted well to it, which is something I think we might have struggled with before.' Sorcha McCartan, Clodagh Finn, and Meabh Cahalane came off the bench to play crucial roles at the end of that game, with half-forward McCarthy stating the panel depth has improved again in 2025. 'The competition for places is a really important factor for us, in that you know there is someone to take the jersey off you if you don't do your job. That competition really drives us and leads us to perform.'
