New categories to recognise creative excellence across AI, fintech, storytelling, leadership, design, and emerging talent
Riyadh, Saudi Arabia – Athar – Saudi Festival of Creativity, the largest gathering of the creative marketing industry in Saudi Arabia, will conclude with the largest and most spectacular edition of Athar Awards to date. Submissions for Athar Awards 2025 officially open today, with 14 new additions bringing the total to over 30 categories, each spotlighting the growing constellation of campaigns, teams, and individual talent driving the Kingdom's creative momentum.
Athar Awards will take place across two nights, reflecting its broader vision to champion creative excellence across both established disciplines and emerging frontiers. Saudi talent in the Individual categories will be recognised following day one of the festival at JAX District – Diriyah Biennale Foundation, while winners in the Campaign and Team categories will be honoured during a prestigious gala dinner on the festival's closing night.
Ian Fairservice, Chairman of Athar Festival and Managing Partner of Motivate Media Group, said:
'Saudi Arabia's creative industry is capturing the world's attention with bold ideas, distinctive storytelling, and globally resonant work. Athar Awards are designed to harness and amplify that momentum, offering a platform that not only celebrates excellence but also propels it forward. As the creative output from the Kingdom grows more sophisticated and ambitious, these awards help showcase how Saudi creativity is perceived internationally — not just as promising, but as world-class. They mark a pivotal step in transforming recognition into long-term influence across the global creative economy.'
Mohamed Al Ayed, Vice Chairman of Athar Festival and CEO of TRACCS, added: 'Last year's Athar Awards demonstrated that the spirit of Saudi innovation is well embedded and thrives across the creative marketing landscape. The fresh stories, perspectives, and bold creative approaches showcased by our winners and nominees — along with their impact on the Kingdom's creative economy and contributions to Vision 2030 — are all truly worth celebrating. Today, we are proud to say that the additional award categories have been thoughtfully introduced to reflect the expanding breadth and depth of our homegrown talent. As we look forward to the largest editions of Athar Festival and Athar Awards in October, we wish all prospective nominees the very best of luck.'

Cristiano Ronaldo to stay at Saudi Arabia's Al Nassr until 2027

Cristiano Ronaldo inked a two-year extension with Saudi Arabia's Al Nassr, the club announced Thursday, following months of speculation over which team he would sign for next season. "Cristiano Ronaldo is staying at @AlNassrFC until 2027," the club wrote in a post on X. Minutes before the official confirmation, the team posted a teaser video, with the 40-year-old Ronaldo walking along a beachfront and saying: "Al Nassr forever". The Portuguese superstar arrived in 2023 in the kingdom to play with the club, heralding a rush of players in the latter stages of their careers to the oil-rich country. Last month, Ronaldo posted "This chapter is over" hours after the Saudi Pro League wrapped up with Al Nassr finishing third and trophyless once again. Cristiano Ronaldo signs a new deal with the Saudi club, in the presence of club chairman Abdullah Al Majid at an undisclosed location. AFP "Ronaldo's presence is a key factor in developing the Saudi league in the last two years and a half. He opens the door for elite and young players to come to Saudi Arabia," a source from the Public Investment Fund (PIF), a major investor in Saudi football, told AFP last month. The oil-funded PIF, the sovereign wealth fund behind a number of big-ticket Saudi investments, controls a group of Pro League clubs including Al Nassr, Al Hilal and Al Ahli. Ronaldo's announcement in May came just months after Brazilian star Neymar ended his injury-plagued 18-month stay in January, after playing just seven times for Al Hilal -- on a reported salary of around $104 million a year. Although Ronaldo was the Pro League's top scorer with 25 goals, he has been unable to win a Saudi or continental trophy with Al Nassr, who lost in the Asian Champions League semi-finals last month. Last year, the five-time Ballon d'Or winner said he could end his career with Al Nassr, the Riyadh team favoured by a number of Saudi royals. Saudi Arabia has shaken up football by spending heavily on stars from Europe, starting with Ronaldo's move in late 2022, and the desert nation will host the World Cup in 2034. For the past two years, Saudi football fans could watch the likes of Ronaldo and Karim Benzema, with six Ballons d'Or between them, on any given weekend during the football season in the kingdom. Academy elects Haifaa Al-Mansour to Board of Governors

As a result of this election and the previously announced branch-elected 2025-2026 governors, the 55-member Board comprises 55% women and 31% from underrepresented communities. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has elected three new governors-at-large to its Board of Governors: Saudi filmmaker Haifaa Al-Mansour (Directors Branch), Effie T. Brown (Producers Branch) and Annie Chang (Production and Technology Branch, Science and Technology Council Chair). Each will begin a three-year term with the start of the Academy's 2025–2026 fiscal year. Haifaa Al-Mansour rose to global recognition in 2012 with the release of Wadjda, the first feature film shot entirely in Saudi Arabia and the first directed by a Saudi woman. Since then, she has become a prominent voice in international cinema and a sought-after television director in Hollywood, contributing to acclaimed series such as Archive 81, City of Fire, Tales of the Walking Dead and Bosch: Legacy. In 2019, her film The Perfect Candidate was selected as Saudi Arabia's official submission for Best International Feature at the 92nd Academy Awards, although it did not receive a nomination. Joining her on the Board are Effie T. Brown, a producer known for championing inclusive storytelling, and Annie Chang, an expert in production technologies. The three new governors-at-large bring wide-ranging expertise and diverse perspectives to the Academy's leadership at a time when it is strengthening its global and industry outreach. Academy President Janet Yang said: 'We're thrilled to welcome Haifaa, Effie and Annie to the Academy's Board of Governors. Their wealth of experiences, perspectives and dedication will be vital to our ongoing global and industry outreach efforts. I also thank my fellow at-large governors DeVon Franklin and Rodrigo García for their incredible leadership over the past six years.' Governors-at-large, like the representatives elected from each of the Academy's 19 branches, may serve up to two three-year terms (consecutively or not), followed by a two-year break before becoming eligible for another two terms—capped at a lifetime maximum of 12 years. The Board is responsible for shaping the Academy's strategic direction, ensuring financial stability, and upholding its mission. With this latest election and the newly confirmed branch-elected governors for 2025–2026, the Academy's 55-member Board now consists of 55% women and 31% individuals from underrepresented communities, reflecting ongoing efforts toward greater inclusivity and representation in the film industry.
