Conor McGregor deletes reaction to Ilia Topuria's KO over Charles Oliveira
Conor McGregor was quick to praise Ilia Topuria after his sensational victory over Charles Oliveira at UFC 317 on Saturday night.
It took just over two minutes for 'El Matador' to become the new lightweight champion of the world. From the off, the pair were willing to meet in the middle and trade leather before Topuria detonated a right hand that stopped the Brazilian.
Following the breathtaking win in Las Vegas, the 28-year-old extended his perfect record to 17-0. He also joined names like McGregor in the list of fighters who have won a title in two different weight classes. Itching for at least one more fight this year, Topuria was quick to call Paddy Pimblett out.
Both exchanged verbal blows before 'El Matador' shoved the Liverpudlian. With a fight potentially on the card, many were quick to offer their verdict. McGregor, who watched the event closely, soon publicly shared his thoughts on the aftermath of the bout.
In a since-deleted X - formerly Twitter - post, he said: "Congrats on winning my old titles, Ilia!" - referring to his past double-champion status in 2016. "He said he gonna rest his b**** on Paddy's head too hahah fair play. Good [lightweight] scrap that one is as well [in my opinion]. UFC is back? Or still missing something..? [Three] KO back-to-back is very good. No one can deny the knockout. I like [Topuria] Unlucky to Charles also. Styles make fights! You are a tremendous and legendary UFC fighter. Rest up."
McGregor seems to have had a change of heart regarding Topuria after their heated exchange last October. The Irish fighter lashed out at Topuria during a Duelbits-sponsored stream, with Topuria responding that the 'Notorious' is not significant enough to consider for a bout at the moment.
Topuria even extended an open invite to McGregor, suggesting the Irishman join him for training. In conversation with Ariel Helwani, he said: "He's a fake fighter. He fakes all the time that he's going to fight. Fighters fight every day...for me, he's retired, I don't even want to talk about a guy that's retired. I feel bad...that's never going to happen, never. How? I'm the world champion and he's not even in the rankings. But, we can do something if he wants. For my next training camp for my next fight, I invite him with Dan Hooker and we can do two and a half minute [sessions]...I'll change them every round, we can do that... Official fight? That's impossible. And right now at this point, I have much bigger fights than Conor McGregor. Conor McChicken."
It appears that Topuria has his sights set on a bout with Pimblett following their altercation on Saturday night. The bad blood between the two has been simmering since 2022 after an incident in a London hotel prior to a UFC event.
Following the encounter, Pimblett sent a warning to his long-time rival ahead of a potential title fight and revealed how he would stop him. "You don't even need to sell that fight – it sells itself," Pimblett said of a possible matchup with Topuria on ESPN's UFC 317 post-fight show. "Two people who genuinely dislike each other. We don't really get that.
"We haven't seen that since Khabib (Nurmagomedov) and (Conor) McGregor, two people who actually hate each other. Because I hate him," Pimblett continued. "I wouldn't want to finish him fast, I would want to finish him with a minute left in the fight after I've elbow him 700 times. I'd want to disfigure him."

Lions player ratings as Jac Morgan 'puts down marker' and pundits left eating their words
Lions player ratings as Jac Morgan 'puts down marker' and pundits left eating their words The Lions ran out comfortable winners in their second match in Australia as they downed the Queensland Reds Jac Morgan of the British & Irish Lions celebrates after scoring their fifth try during the tour match against Queensland Reds (Image:) The British and Irish Lions made it back-to-back wins out in Australia after they thumped the Queensland Reds in Brisbane. Following a concerning defeat against Argentina in the warm-up in Dublin, Andy Farrell's side now appear to be up and running, backing up their triumph over the Western Force at the weekend with another positive display and a 52-12 win. As ever, though, with Farrell trying to piece together his Test XV in his mind, a number of players put their hands up. After Tomos Williams' tour-ending injury in the win over the Force on Saturday, Jac Morgan is the only man left flying the Welsh flag Down Under, however he stood up to the occasion on Wednesday with a well-taken try and a fantastic performance all round the park. Sign up to Inside Welsh rugby on Substack to get exclusive news stories and insight from behind the scenes in Welsh rugby. He enjoyed the most carry metres (49m) of any Lions forward and was the top tackler with 21. He also picked up three jackal turnovers, too. And his performance was well received across the board with the British and Irish media, ramping up that competition for the seven shirt when Test No.1 comes around on July 19. "The race for seven is right on. He's been exceptional tonight and put pressure on the players playing on Saturday," said former Wales and Lions fly-half Dan Biggar after Morgan had been awarded the player of the match gong. Article continues below "He's put down a marker," added commentator Miles Harrison. The top mark came from The Telegraph, who handed Morgan a 9/10, saying: "Punchy and clever in the carry, scoring a try while plundering a hat-trick of jackal turnovers, too. A quiet evening against Argentina was banished brilliantly. "Right back in the conversation (to start a Test), despite fierce competition." RugbyPass said the Welshman enjoyed a "strong" performance, adding: "Made an excellent turnover early in the game and came up with two more. His effort couldn't be faulted in all aspects of the game. Hit a great line for his try in the second half." While it was a bitty first half, some reports in The Times said he was having a quiet first half. However, by the end of the match, the Ospreys star appears to have emerged as a Test contender. "Jac Morgan is named man of the match; impossible to find fault with that," wrote Stephen Jones in The Times. Will Kelleher also added: "Jac Morgan is the official man of the match. I take it back when I said he wasn't doing much in the first half. He's grown into this game, and the tour, really well and had a good night." "For the Tests it feels they'll still go for a 'big 6', so Ollie Chessum or Tadhg Beirne, with an out and out No7 either side of Jack Conan. So would you have Morgan, Tom Curry or Josh van der Flier having seen them all play properly now?" The Express said that Morgan sent a reminder to everyone of his talents, awarding him an 8/10 and saying: "Reminded everyone there is still a Welshman on tour with first half turnover and [ran a] banging line for his score." also believe Morgan's performance in Queensland has thrust him right into the Test conversation. Giving him a 7/10, they added: "Morgan placed his foot right into the argument for a Test start with a really strong showing in the 7 jersey. "He was his usual industrious self with the ball in hand, grabbing a try and adding his weight to shove Porter over in the first half. "In defence he was a menace in and around the breakdown which was a huge positive for the Lions." There was also praise from The Guardian, who said of Morgan: "He was brilliant. Now the only Welshman in the squad, he could be a starter for the opening Test if he continues to perform like this." Elsewhere, others also impressed. Captain Maro Itoje put in a big display and he got 9/10 in RugbyPass's player ratings. They wrote of the skipper: "Leading the Lions for the first time on Australian soil, Itoje proved a real nuisance at lineout time and showed real intent in defence and in the carry. Won every 50:50 and capped his performance with the Lions' first try. Much more like it." The Daily Mail also dished out a 9/10 for the second row, saying of his performance: "This was one of the captain's hallmark performances. A nuisance in defence, forcing spilt balls and messy rucks. Led from the front with his usual intensity." Finn Russell also received praise from the publication. "Showcased his vast range of passes to ensure the ball reached his wingers," they said. "Seamlessly linked up with (Jamison) Gibson-Park for a Test-ready half-back partnership. Wrap him in cotton wool until the Tests." Article continues below The Telegraph also gave Itoje 9/10, while they handed the same mark to wing Tommy Freeman. "Fumbled his first touch before recovering," they said of the Englishman. "Won back a restart and hunted involvements with typical hunger, scoring twice."

Thomas Muller's reaction to Man Utd transfer speaks volumes - 'You mean now?'
Thomas Muller is set to leave Bayern Munich after the Club World Cup and has poured freezing cold water on any prospect of a free switch to Manchester United this summer Thomas Muller has said he was attracted to Manchester United 'many times' during his career but has laughed off any suggestion that he would be interested in a summer move. The German forward is set to leave Bayern Munich at the end of the Club World Cup and is on the lookout for a new club. And while he would be keen on trying his luck abroad, the veteran reckons it would be a poor fit for both himself and United were he to go to Old Trafford now. In an interview with CBS Sports, Muller was asked: 'Is there a European league for you that you kind of have a hankering to say 'I would like to have played in the Premier League' or…?" And he replied: "Yeah, I thought about it. There were some moments I thought, 'Ok, maybe it would be nice to experience it.' Muller was then asked "Do Manchester United look appealing to you?" The veteran replied: "Many times. Or do you mean now? No, no, no I'm not the right guy for them and they are not the right club for me. They want to have fun and I want to have fun so that's not a match.' Bayern have had an approach for Liverpool star Luis Diaz rejected and have now been linked with a deal for Marcus Rashford, who is open to playing abroad having been told there is no route back into Ruben Amorim's good books at United. Rashford, 27, flirted with a return to prolific form while on loan at Aston Villa but was injured before the campaign concluded and Unai Emery's side have chosen against activating a clause to make his switch permanent. United's first team squad reconvene for pre-season training on Monday July 7, leaving Amorim with a potentially awkward reunion with several players who are expected to leave by the end of the summer transfer window. That also includes Antony, the Brazilian winger who spent the second half of last season enjoying a successful loan at Real Betis. United have already signed Matheus Cunha from Wolves and remain keen on a deal for Brentford star Bryan Mbeumo, though the Bees asking price remains some way off United's current valuation, while talk of a move for Sporting Lisbon star Viktor Gyokeres has slowed because his current side appear unwilling to budge on a £85m asking price. Amorim's side will officially kick off pre-season training next Monday, July 7, with their first friendly pencilled in against promoted rivals Leeds United in Stockholm on July 19. They then head to the United States for a training camp and three warm-up fixtures against West Ham, Bournemouth and Everton before hosting Fiorentina at Old Trafford a week before the Premier League season kicks off.
