Lions claim scrappy win over Waratahs to remain unbeaten Down Under

Wales Onlinea day ago
The British & Irish Lions continued their unbeaten run on Australian soil this summer as they saw off a spirited NSW Waratahs side despite an unconvincing performance in Sydney.
Andy Farrell's men were not at their best in what was a scrappy encounter at the Allianz Stadium on Saturday evening, but ran in three tries to seal a 10-21 victory over the Super Rugby side. A Huw Jones brace put the Lions ahead in the first half, but the hosts hit back with tries from Darby Lancaster and Ethan Dobbins either side of the break.
Alex Mitchell then grabbed a third to restore some breathing room for his team, as the tourists saw out the win in what proved to be a scoreless final half an hour.
Farrell will be frustrated with what was a disjointed showing from his side, who failed to get a grip on their handling errors over the course of the 80 minutes and left more than a few tries out on the field.
However, there were still some big positives for the Lions boss to take, including his team's defensive line speed and a powerful scrum that took the Waratahs pack to the cleaners on almost every occasion.
The victory follows impressive wins over Western Force and Queensland Reds, with the opening Test against the Wallabies in Brisbane now just two weeks away.

Huw Jones believes Lions' centre options are interchangeable as first Test looms

While a host of Andy Farrell's men played their way out of contention for the series against Australia in an unimpressive 21-10 victory over the New South Wales Waratahs, Jones seized his chance with both hands. The 31-year-old ran in two tries in Sydney – the first the product of his understanding with Scotland midfield partner Sione Tuipulotu – in the most eye-catching performance from a 12 or 13 so far on tour. If the Lions are to blend their best performing centres against the Wallabies in the first Test on July 19, then Bundee Aki and Jones will start. The conundrum facing Farrell with two matches to go before the Brisbane opener is whether to reward form or opt for the familiarity provided by the ready-made units of Tuipulotu and Jones or Ireland's Aki and Garry Ringrose. Jones, however, believes after being in camp for three weeks, the quartet have reached a point where they are interchangeable. 'As a centre group we have been working really hard to get the connections with all of us,' the Glasgow Warriors back said. 'For the first try, Sione knows where I'm going to be. We have played loads together and it's all about timing. 'It worked against the Waratahs, but there's no saying it wouldn't have worked with any other player. 'We have worked as a unit in building those sorts of connections, whatever combination plays in the next couple of games, so hopefully we will see more results like that. Huw Jones at the double in the first half 🦁#Lions2025 — British & Irish Lions (@lionsofficial) July 5, 2025 'We bounce loads of ideas off each other in terms of rugby stuff, but socially as well it has been great to get to know the others. They are great guys and that makes it easier. 'If you enjoy each other's company then you're willing to spend the time with each other on and off the field. That goes for the whole squad. 'It has been a really enjoyable couple of weeks, but once we get on the field we are giving each other all the secrets and trying to help each other out as much as we can.' Jones has scored three tries in as many appearances for the Lions and having joined the tour with a niggling Achilles problem, he is now flying. Next stop: Canberra to face @BrumbiesRugby 🐎🦁#Lions2025 — British & Irish Lions (@lionsofficial) July 6, 2025 'After the Six Nations I was struggling with injury. I got it scanned late on in the season and we managed to then have a bit of an intervention,' he said. 'It definitely feels better now, which is good. I didn't play much since the Six Nations, just two games. 'So over this last week it has been good over to get two 80 minutes in a row and a bit off the bench against the Western Force. I feel like I have shaken off the dust.'

Dom deal not a bad idea as United close in on Calvert-Lewin

Another day, another forward is linked with Manchester United with widespread reports suggesting free agent Dominic Calvert-Lewin could be snapped up by the Europa League runners-up. The England international is available after failing to sign a new deal with Everton after nine seasons at Goodison Park which promised greatness only for injuries to limit his potential. Championship winners Leeds United were keen on signing the 28-year-old last month but dropped their interest because of his wage demands and it is believed the former Toffees target man ideally wants to join a club which is involved in Europe next season. Champions League Newcastle, who are 11/2 with William Hill and bet365, would be ideal candidates as they are searching for a goalscorer to push Alexander Isak after recently missing out on Brighton forward Joao Pedro who has opted to sign for Chelsea. But moving from Merseyside to Manchester would appeal to Calvert-Lewin and Old Trafford boss Ruben Amorim is reportedly keen on the switch, especially if he can get Marcus Rashford, Alejandro Garnacho, Antony and Tyrell Malacia off the payroll with Rasmus Hojlund also primed to leave. Calvert-Lewin only scored three times in 26 Premier League outings last season but has previously managed double figures in back-to-back campaigns and would line up with Matheus Cunha, who has been snapped up from Wolves for £62.5million. United have offered Brentford a similar amount for Cameroon attacker Bryan Mbeumo but the Bees are holding out for at least £65million with United still monitoring the situation between Viktor Gyokeres and Amorim's former club Sporting, although Arsenal appear to hold the upper hand if negotiations develop. Calvert-Lewin's decision to run down his Everton contract and become a free agent saves money for United which can be spent elsewhere and the lure of playing for one of the biggest clubs in the world would satisfy his ambitions. That makes odds of 5/1 with Hills that he is wearing the famous red shirt at the start of next term difficult to ignore. Marin Cilic is enjoying a renaissance in the twilight of his career with a strong run into the second week at Wimbledon, but it is possible he will find his next rival too hot to handle. The 36-year-old has been involved in a couple of gruelling matches with a four-set victory over British hope Jack Draper followed by a similar success against Jaume Munar, who took the prized scalp of Alexander Bublik, a dark horse to win the title before a ball was hit, in the first round. Next up it's Flavio Cobolli, who has yet to drop a set, and the 22nd seed's last victory was an impressive one against No.15 seed Jakub Mensik. The Italian is evens to reach the quarter-finals with William Hill, Betfred and 888Sport. More Trending Clara Tauson has never reached the quarter-finals of a grand slam but that will change if she beats Iga Swiatek in what promises to be a thrilling match as Wimbledon's women's singles battle gathers pace. The 22-year-old right-hander from Denmark will be full of confidence after defeating former champion Elena Rybakina in straight sets in the last round and can push Swiatek, who has picked up form on grass after losing her French Open crown at Roland Garros last month, all the way. It is 13/8 with Paddy Power, Betfair and Sky Bet this goes to a deciding set and although the outcome is a tougher call, a small flutter on Tauson winning 2-1 is interesting at 13/2 with Ladbrokes, Coral, Sporting Index and SpreadEx.
