Iraq offers assistance to UNRWA

Iraqi News19-05-2025

Baghdad (IraqiNews.com) – The Iraqi Prime Minister, Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani, reaffirmed on Sunday Iraq's willingness to provide all forms of assistance to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA).
Al-Sudani's remarks took place during his meeting with the UNRWA's Commissioner-General, Philippe Lazzarini, in the Iraqi capital, Baghdad, according to a statement released by the Prime Minister's Office (PMO).
The meeting addressed the UNRWA's attempts to carry out its mandate and provide essential services despite the hurdles and direct threats it encounters from the Israeli troops.
The two sides emphasized the significance of putting an end to Israel's ongoing aggression, speeding up the entry of humanitarian supplies to the people in the Gaza Strip, and opening the border crossings.
Iraq's support for UNRWA is shown in the measures it took at the Arab Summit and the Arab Economic and Social Development Summit, held recently in Baghdad, including its proposal to establish a fund for Gaza reconstruction.

In a call with Macron, Iran criticizes IAEA "double standards" in nuclear reporting

Shafaq News – Tehran/ Paris Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian criticized the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) for what he described as biased reporting on Iran's nuclear file and failure to condemn recent attacks on its nuclear facilities, calling the agency's approach a threat to regional and global security. Speaking during a phone call with French President Emmanuel Macron, Pezeshkian questioned why Israel, which is not a signatory to the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT), should serve as a source for IAEA reporting. 'Such double standards create serious challenges for regional and international security,' he said, urging the agency to uphold the rights of member states and refrain from discriminatory behavior. Pezeshkian expressed dissatisfaction with IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi's latest reports and his silence regarding recent Israeli and US attacks on Iran's nuclear sites, describing these actions as violations of international law that were either ignored or justified by international actors, including human rights advocates. 'The IAEA must commit fully to its own rules and restore confidence by acting impartially,' he added. Macron, in response, offered condolences for Iranian casualties resulting from recent Israeli strikes, stating that France was among the first countries to condemn the joint US-Israeli attacks and had made it clear to Israeli officials that Tel Aviv holds no legal or legitimate standing in the Iranian nuclear file.

Israeli cabinet to reconvene on Gaza strategy on Monday

Shafaq News – Middle East Israel's security cabinet will reconvene on Monday after failing to resolve deep divisions over its Gaza strategy, Israeli media reported. According to Israel Hayom, Sunday's tense session ended without consensus, pushing ministers to meet again today at 5 p.m. local time. The debate centers on whether to prioritize a hostage deal or escalate military operations against Hamas, with senior commanders and political leaders sharply divided. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who faces an International Criminal Court warrant, declared before the meeting that freeing Israeli hostages remained the top priority, followed by dismantling Hamas. Sources close to Netanyahu, cited by Israel Hayom, suggested he might accept a deal based on US envoy Steve Witkoff's proposals, with plans to resume military action if negotiations collapse. Top military officials reportedly pushed back, arguing that a full occupation of Gaza was unfeasible and calling on Netanyahu to define clear, realistic objectives. They warned the current campaign had reached its limits and that a prisoner swap might be the most practical path forward. While families of Israeli hostages welcomed Netanyahu's stated commitment to their release, they demanded a comprehensive deal to free all captives and end the war, with some accusing him of stalling for political reasons. One mother compared the situation to US President Trump 's decision to cancel an Iran strike at the last minute, urging Netanyahu to show similar restraint. Meanwhile, a senior US official told The Times of Israel, ahead of Strategic Affairs Minister Ron Dermer's visit to Washington, that the White House would pressure Israel to agree to a ceasefire. Trump also warned on Truth Social that Netanyahu's trial could derail negotiations. Coalition insiders told Israeli outlets that the Knesset was unlikely to tie any ceasefire to freezing Netanyahu's legal cases. Hamas' October 7, 2023, attack, which followed years of blockade and military tensions, killed about 1,200 Israelis and led to 251 hostages being taken. In response, Israel launched a massive military campaign that has killed more than 56,400 Palestinians, including 18,000 children and 12,400 women, according to the Palestinian Central Bureau of Statistics. So far, Israel has reportedly rescued eight hostages alive and recovered several bodies. Officials estimate 56 hostages remain in Gaza, with about one-third thought to be alive. At the same time, Israel holds roughly 10,400 Palestinians in its prisons, including 49 women and 440 minors, according to the Addameer Prisoner Support and Human Rights Association.

Abshenas added that anything can happen today and nothing is inconceivable anymore. He said that the Iranian public is asking why Iran isn't producing a nuclear weapon, and he added that in the face of threats and sanctions, Iran will follow in the footsteps of North Korea.
