College World Series predictions, picks for Day 2: Will Arkansas or LSU start CWS strong?

Yahoo14-06-2025
OMAHA, NE ― Day 2 of the 2025 Men's College World Series will get underway June 14 with the second half of the bracket beginning play.
In the afternoon game (2 p.m. ET, ESPN), Murray State will take on UCLA. In the nightcap (7 p.m. ET, ESPN), Arkansas will face LSU.

The game between the Tigers and Razorbacks is the only one among the Omaha openers featuring two teams that hosted a regional.
Saturday's two losing teams will play an early game Monday in the losers bracket, while the winning teams will play Wednesday night for a spot in the semifinals.
Here are our predictions:
Murray State vs. UCLA
UCLA 9, Murray State 7
How's this one for intrigue? UCLA hasn't been to Omaha since its national title run in 2013 and Murray State is making its first trip ever. The Racers are the mid-major darlings who have proven near-impossible to put away. Their offense is a perfect fit for Charles Schwab Field, too.

But the Bruins, while lacking a true ace, have a trump card: arguably the best player in Omaha, shortstop Roch Cholowsky. He has the ability to take over any game, and that's a powerful thing.
CWS storylines: Biggest strength, weakness of every team in Omaha
LSU vs. Arkansas
Arkansas 4, LSU 2
This matchup, which features a battle of aces (Zach Root vs. Kade Anderson), is the headliner of the Omaha slate. It's easy to see either team coming away victorious, as LSU has better top-end pitching, but Arkansas has more depth and a better offense. The Tigers won the series when the two teams faced off earlier this season in Baton Rouge, but the bet is that the Razorbacks get a few more big hits.

Arkansas football lands commitment from 2027 quarterback Joaquin Kavouklis

Arkansas football's summer recruiting run is now dipping into the 2027 class. Three-star quarterback Joaquin Kavouklis committed to the Razorbacks Thursday, giving Arkansas its foundational piece for next year's cycle. Kavouklis confirmed the announcement on his social media pages and also held offers from the likes of West Virginia, Georgia Tech and Virginia Tech. Advertisement According to the 247Sports Composite, Kavouklis is the 58th-best quarterback prospect in his class. Overall, the 6-foot-2 recruit ranks 654th in the country and 79th in the state of Florida. According to MaxPreps, Kavouklis threw for 2,404 yards with 21 touchdowns and eight interceptions last fall. He was a sophomore starting for Tarpon Springs, who went 5-6. Kavouklis transferred to Lakeland High School this offseason. The Dreadnaughts have won nine state championships and are historically one of the most successful programs in Central Florida both on the field and sending recruits to the next level. Lakeland went 13-1 last year. Lakeland quarterback Joaquin Kavouklis throws a pass during spring practice at Bryant Stadium. Kavouklis is the second commit in Arkansas' 2027 class, joining offensive lineman Bradley Sturdivant, who plays for in-state Sheridan High School. Advertisement He is also the second commit in as many days for Arkansas, who landed 2026 linebacker JJ Bush on Wednesday. A lot can change via high school recruiting and the transfer portal, but Arkansas is slated to have a quarterback room of KJ Jackson, Grayson Wilson, Trever Jackson, Jayvon Gilmore and Kavouklis in 2027. Gilmore is a 2026 commit, with the other three quarterbacks still holding four years of eligibility with the Razorbacks. Watch 29-year-old Rays rookie Jake Mangum of Mississippi State hit inside-the-park home run

Jake Mangum's second career home run in the MLB didn't even need to leave the ballpark. The former Mississippi State baseball star hit an inside-the-park home run on July 2 for the Tampa Bay Rays. He hit the ball to deep center field, and it caromed off the glove of Athletics center fielder Denzel Clarke. Clarke fell to the ground and Mangum sped around the bases. There was no throw to home plate. Mangum, 29, made his MLB debut on March 30 for the Rays and has had a spectacular season that's kept him in the lineup. He is batting .314 with 18 runs, 26 RBIs and 11 stolen bases in 50 games. Advertisement The Pearl native played for the Bulldogs from 2016-19. He batted .357 in his MSU career and is the SEC all-time hits leader. MSU made four NCAA tournament super regionals and two College World Series while he was on the team. He played in the minor leagues since 2019 for the New York Mets, Miami Marlins and Rays organizations before getting the call-up. His first career home run was hit on May 31 at Houston, with his parents watching from the crowd. The Rays are 47-39, holding the second wild card spot in the American League. North Carolina hires AD-in-waiting, Bubba Cunningham to take advisory role in '26

North Carolina announced a transition plan Tuesday that will allow athletic director Bubba Cunningham to work with his replacement-in-waiting through the end of the upcoming academic year before moving into an advisory role created for him. Hired in 2011, Cunningham will work directly with his replacement starting in August. RFK Racing president Steve Newmark was named executive associate athletic director effective Aug. 15. Newmark will succeed Cunningham as athletic director in the summer of 2026. Cunningham signed a contract extension through 2029. His new title will be senior advisor to the chancellor and athletic director, which a university news release said will "allow Cunningham to focus his vast expertise on transformational University projects that will position the University and Carolina Athletics successfully for the future." "As part of my last contract extension, I committed to working with University leadership on a succession plan that would positively position Carolina athletics and our 28 teams for the future," Cunningham said in the school-issued release. "I appreciate the opportunity to extend my contract and enhance my role in a way that will allow me to continue to support our outstanding student-athletes, coaches and staff as we transition and navigate the changing athletics landscape. I am excited for the future." Since Cunningham took over as AD in 2011, the Tar Heels have won 24 national championships, participated in 11 college football bowl games, three College World Series and three men's Final Four runs. Newmark, who is from Chapel Hill, was on the advisory committee that selected head coach Bill Belichick to lead the football program. "Like many passionate Tar Heel fans, avidly following UNC athletics has represented a special and unique bond with my family and friends since childhood, and I recognize the role it serves for the University, alumni, community and broader fanbase," Newmark said. "I look forward to working with Bubba and the entire Tar Heel Nation to continue to elevate UNC's status as a premier brand in college sports." Newmark has a legal background and his resume includes work with the NCAA and Southeastern Conference when he was a partner at the Charlotte-based law firm Robinson Bradshaw & Hinson. The William & Mary and Virginia School of Law grad has been president of RFK Racing since 2010. --Field Level Media Field Level Media 2025 - All Rights Reserved
