I RECENTLY came across the Malaysia Kumar podcast episode titled 'Why I always talk in English' featuring Malaysian celebrity chef Shankar S Santhiram.
He spoke at length about his December 2024 trip to South Africa when he prepared traditional Malaysian Tamil sappadu (food). As a South African of Tamil heritage myself, and having visited Malaysia recently, I was initially intrigued. There is always value in hearing how diasporic communities view one another, especially if the analysis is approached with sincerity and respect. However, what unfolded in the episode was not simply an exploration of cross-cultural insights, but a troubling display of cultural condescension, pompously wrapped in the language of Tamil pride.
Santhiram spoke affectionately about how Tamil played a 'huge role' in his life - though he chose to swap Tamil and speak in English to 'reach a wider audience' and to entice non-Indians, such as native Malays, to sample 'Malaysian Tamil food'. Fair enough. Adaptability is something all diasporic communities understand. But the conversation took a disappointing turn.
Santhiram went on to point out that South Africa only had around 1.3 million Indians, about half the Indian population of Malaysia. Using this statistic as a foundation, he confidently claimed that Tamils in South African have forgotten their cultural ways, language, and even their food. This is where I began to fume.

To imply that South African Tamils are 'culture-less' is not just inaccurate; it is downright deeply disrespectful. Like Malaysia, South Africa's Indian community was forged through colonialism, indenture, and marginalisation. Our ancestors arrived with little, survived apartheid, and yet managed to pass down language, religion, and cultural traditions, often at great personal cost.
Our way of speaking Tamil may sound different. Our breyani might not be what you would find in Malaysia's Little India Penang or Brickfields. But these are not signs of forgetting or discarding the recipe - they are markers of adaptation and resilience.
We still chant the Thirukural or sing from the Thevaram at temple functions. We still mark Thaipusam with kavady processions that stretch for kilometres. We still light lamps on Karthigai Deepam; gather for prayer evenings; and teach some Tamil in community halls where government support is scarce. This is not the absence of culture, Santhiram Aiyā. It is in fact its preservation, against great odds.
Indian food is a powerful lens through which to view identity. But food, like language and rituals, evolves wherever it takes root. In Malaysia, Tamil food has absorbed Malay and Chinese influences: just look at roti canai, banana leaf rice, bold curries with coconut milk and heaps of noodles on the plate with almost every meal.
In South Africa, Indian dishes are fused with local realities: bunny chow, tantalising mixed vegetable curries with madumbe, dried fish and boiled eggs, spicy tinned-fish, mutton, Cornish chicken or prawn biryani, fiery pickles, and curry powders that reflect both Indian heritage and South African necessity.
Neither Malaysian Tamil or South African Tamil cuisine is more 'authentic'. They are both valid cultural expressions, shaped by context, by climate, colonialism, and community. To suggest South African food has lost its Tamil essence simply because it doesn't look like Malaysian Tamil cuisine is to miss the entire point of diaspora: we don't exist to mirror India or each other; we exist to remember through adaptation, Santhiram Sir.
In the new 'Rainbow Nation' that constitutes South Africa, there is a greater need for interculturalism where other cultures are explored and appreciated by those whose roots are not in that culture. According to Richard Schechner, one of the founders of Performance Studies, 'intercultural exchange takes a teacher; someone who knows the body of performance of the culture being translated. The translator of culture is not a mere agent, as a translator of words might be, but an actual culture-bearer'.
Full marks to chef Santhiram for his Tamil pride, a quality I too strongly espouse. But when that pride turns into prescription, telling other communities how they should 'be more like us', it becomes entirely something else: a cultural hierarchy, a holier-than-thou attitude that I despise.
The irony is stark. A man who chooses to speak English 'to be accessible' criticises another community for not speaking enough Tamil. A chef who blends cultures to make Tamil food more appealing to others, accuses South Africans of diluting their own. It's a contradiction that echoes a deeper issue: internalised comparison, rather than global solidarity.
South African Tamils, like their Malaysian counterparts, are not cultural clones of India. We are not defined by numbers. We are not waiting to be corrected. We are part of a global Tamil story and forged on the anvil of reinvention, resistance, and rootedness. One where culture is not a competition, but a conversation.
So instead of asking South African Tamils to be more like Malaysians, perhaps it's time for Santhiram Anna to ask how our differences enrich each other and what that says about the strength of our shared heritage.

What can fans look forward to in what you will wear and dress your clients in? We are kicking it up a notch this year. We're going to showcase artistic pieces with 3D elements between me and the people I'm styling. While I don't want to say I've been ahead of the game, I feel I've been ahead of the curve until the curve became a spear, so this is a continuation of trying to figure out what's next. What were your thoughts about this year's theme? I was a bit confused the first time I heard it and, after some time, I realised this is a broad theme. If you miss it, it's by choice. I love that people can celebrate all things local, especially after the recent march by South African fashion designers to encourage the government to review laws about buying and supporting local designs. It's not only a fashion theme but also a sociopolitical conversation. Does the Durban July prove we are ready for Mzansi's own Met Gala? There's only one Met Gala and we should not fantasise or flirt with the idea of different regions around the world having an event of that stature. The Durban July echoes what a Met Gala is, but it's not structured in the same way. When it comes to how people show up, it echoes that stature. South African stars get a lot of flak in comparison to other international stars, especially Nollywood's fashionistas. Having dressed so many of these stars in and out of the country, do you think it's a fair judgment? I do not think the Nigerian fashion industry is greater than South Africa's. Do celebrities on the red carpet in Nigeria dress better than those in South Africa? For sure, but celebrities on the red carpet are not a reflection of a fashion industry. There are a lot of factors at play to make what can be titled a fashion industry, such as the retail environment, manufacturers, quality control, fashion media and platforms such as fashion weeks. The value chain, from pre-manufacturing to garment resting is much broader in South Africa than it is in Nigeria. As someone who has been a few times to Nigeria and has a few friends in the industry and understands how it works there, there's definitely a broader difference. However, the Nigerian public put a lot more intention into their looks. Take, for example, last year's Bridgerton Ball. We had a few Nigerians come to the ball and they had already shot images for what they were going to wear. That is how far they are willing to go for their looks, while some of our South African stars were probably still getting the finishing stitches to their outfits on the day of the event. It's about intention, that is why it reflects more on the red carpets of Nigerian stars. Any tips for those who have last-minute outfit changes or haven't picked a look yet? First, you should know yourself in how far you are willing to push. Whether it's comfort or revealing clothing, you need to know yourself and reflect it in your outfit. I can carry an uncomfortable look throughout the day without anyone picking it up, but if you know you cannot, it will show and it can affect your confidence levels. Second, stay on theme. South Africans have become strict about themes. Get a stylist to help you interpret and put the look together. There's a reason it's a stylist's job. When I was young there used to be this ad that said 'get an adult to help you', so get an adult to help you. If you could pick a theme for the next Durban July, what would it be? I'm working on my third original fashion event titled 'Truth or Dare: Fashion's Fascination with Mythology'. It would be great to see how everyone interprets that. Fashion and mythology have always been intertwined, from Versace's Medusa to Dolce & Gabanna's aesthetic. Fashion has always borrowed from mythical creatures and stories. Even in Africa we have things such as ibhayi, which is tied to spirituality.

High-riding Michael Owen: Football Legend turned horseracing ambassador

MICHAEL Owen, the legendary former England and Liverpool striker, and now SunBet brand ambassador is in the country and will be experiencing the Durban July for the first time on Saturday. Image: Supplied FAMED footballer and analyst Michael Owen airing his authoritative views on the possible Hollywoodbets Durban July outcome on Saturday will not be something that drops horseracing people and punters out of their saddles. Owen is very familiar with all things horseracing. He's a respected UK-based horsebreeder, owner and his large stable has produced many champion runners that have won some of the biggest races around the world. Owen is a Sunbet ambassador who has been lined-up for a few engagements before and after Saturday's big racing event at the Hollywoodbets Greyville Racecourse, which will be his maiden experience. Image: Instagram Some of Owen's Sunbet appointments include a panel discussion about the big race with leading local personalities on Thursday, media and fan engagements and he's also excited about a planned visit to the Summerveld Training Centre, one of the country's leading horse yards. But the big drawcard for him is the outing on Saturday. 'It's a race renowned all over the world and I can't wait to experience it in person. I have followed South African racing for some time and they have always produced very good horses. 'It's great the restrictions have been lifted and hopefully we will see more of the South African horses on the world stage too.' His affinity for all things horsey kicked in around age 10, by then his football goalscoring ability had already taken its stride. 'It was my dad who caused it. If I scored a couple of goals on a Saturday we would stop outside the bookies (bookmakers), he'd give me a pound and I'd be able to buy some sweets while he went in to place bets. 'We'd go home and put the TV on – horseracing was the only sport on at the time on a Saturday afternoon. 'When I got to around 13 I used to read up in the newspapers about which jockeys were winning the races and who their trainers were and started to pick the horses out for dad and that's where my love for horses began.' Owen remembered returning from a FIFA World Cup Tournament (France 1998), he was 18 then, when his England teammate, David Platt, talked to him about owning a horse. 'I just assumed it was just for the Queen and the sheikhs of the world, not the man on the street like me. 'He (Platt) introduced me to his trainer, John Gosden. I subsequently had all my horses with John, the numbers kept swelling and by the time I got to my early twenties I was thinking, I may be a footballer now, but I won't be one forever.' He responded by building his own yard at age 22, by then he already owned horses. This led to the establishment of Manor House in Cheshire, which grew appreciably over the years and now stands as one of the biggest yards in an area that is well-known for horse rearing and training. Owen said he and his team kept pushing boundaries at Manor House and have been the pacesetters when it came to the use of science and technology at his yard that is home to a string of more than 130 horses. Hugo Palmer is the current trainer at Manor House. Some of his Manor House charges have competed around the globe in prestigious events like the Melbourne Cup and Breeders Cup. 'I'm really pleased with how the stables have grown and improved. 'I am probably most proud of Brown Panther - I bred him and co-owned him and he went on to win the Dubai Gold Cup and the Irish St Ledger.' On how he straddles between football analysis and running a flourishing stable, Owen said: 'Football still takes priority - working on football is my day job and I love it. Alongside my work on the TV, I have a few commercial sponsors that I work with, but whenever I'm not working I'm at Manor House.' DAILY NEWS

Bringing the franchise back to Los Angeles, returning to its street racing roots, and reuniting Dom Toretto with Brian O'Conner, according to Daily Mail. Diesel, 57, wore a tank top emblazoned with 'Fast X Part 2 Los Angeles Production 2025'. He excitedly shared the news with fans. He emphasised the importance of these conditions to Universal Pictures. 'That is what you're going to get in the finale.' Fans met his remarks with mixed reactions, especially since Paul Walker tragically died in a car accident in 2013 at the age of 40. Walker's character was given a heartfelt send-off in Furious 7 (2015). Filmmakers used advanced CGI technology to recreate his face over stand-ins.
