Servitors of Muruga
He has many names and countless devotees across the world. Revered as Muruga, Kartikeya, Skanda and Subrahmanya among others, the youthful God, with His endearing image of sitting astride His mount peacock, his flag displaying a majestic rooster, stands tall among the Hindu pantheon of gods. Infusing steadfast faith and building character among his devotees, Muruga is celebrated for his fearlessness and His abodes (temples) are always full of devotees thronging the portals for a darshan of the Lord who is always on the job of taking care of every need of those who repose faith in Him, said P. Swaminathan. Many, like Arunagirinadhar, have composed verses on Muruga. Others have travelled everywhere, discoursing on His greatness and spreading the word, so that people can find inner peace. Krupanandha Variyar was one of the greatest servitors of Muruga, in recent times. A gifted speaker, his discourses served to ignite latent bhakti in the ordinary people, whereby simple, efficacious spiritual practices could dovetail with a householder's daily life. Muruga's sporting legends are legion and He sported with Variyar as well. The speaker was scheduled to discourse on Muruga at a small town near Karur. Arriving a day earlier, Variyar decided to conduct an abhishekham for Muruga which attracted huge crowds. Focusing his mind on Muruga, Variyar conducted the elaborate ritual, anointing the idol with milk, honey, yoghurt, panchamritam and other ingredients. Adding to the piety of the moment, the assembled, self invited guests began to render songs from Arunagirinadhar's Tiruppugazh and other spiritual literature. Variyar did not take his eyes or his mind from the abhishekam. Unknown to him, his big fat gold ring, with inscriptions of holy mantra, slipped from his fingers and got washed away in the abhishekham water. No one else noticed, except the all-seeing One. Variyar noticed the missing ring only the next evening, while he was half way through his discourse. He did not miss a beat, but his mind registered the loss, which was noticed by another devotee. As though a voice whispered to him, the devotee went to the place where the abhishekham was conducted, searched around and found the ring nestling on the root of a flowering plant where the abhishekham water had been emptied. Does one need better proof that Muruga protects His devotees?
