OFFICIAL: Orlando Pirates sign Malian midfield maestro
Orlando Pirates are revamping their squad so they can mount a challenge for Betway Premiership and Champions League glory.
Aboudlaye Mariko arrives from Djoliba AC.
What will the 23-year-old bring to the party?
'Ouaddou could beat Chiefs with a relegation team'
The Sea Robbers have swooped to sign the relatively unknown Abdoulaye Mariko from Djoliba. The midfield schemer played seven times in the Champions League last season.
Kabelo Kgositsile, Masindi Nemtajela, Nkosikhona Ndaba, Tshepo Mashiloane, Sihle Nduli, Tsepang Moremi, Sinoxolo Kwayiba, Yanela Mbuthuma and Sipho Mbule are all expected to become Pirates players during the winter window.

Orlando Pirates and Bafana Bafana wide forward Relebohile Mofokeng seems destined for a big-money move away from South Africa. He racked up a staggering 49 appearances in the 2024-2025 season across all competitions. Arguably the club's most important operator, that sample of matches included 12 goals and 15 assists. It's a stellar output for any player, let alone one who only exited his teens in October 2024.
Pirates make their move for exciting PSL striker?

Kaizer Chiefs to snap up Portugal-based defender in R4.5m deal
Kaizer Chiefs have taken a major step forward in bolstering their defence by reaching an agreement with Portugal-based left-back Nkanyiso Shinga. The Soweto giants have tracked the FC Alverca defender for months, and the move now looks all but finalised. As first revealed by The South African , Chiefs identified Shinga's five-year stint in Portugal as a key asset in their pursuit of continental success. 'Chiefs are going to pay a transfer fee of around R4.5 million which is believed to be very fair considering that his club just got promoted in Portugal and considering his age as well,' the source confirmed. 'Shinga has been offered a three-year contract and apparently all the personal terms are believed to have been agreed upon and the player is happy to leave Portugal and join Amakhosi.' Club sources see Shinga as a better option than their current left-backs due to his international experience, which they hope will be crucial in their CAF Confederation Cup campaign. Another source close to the deal disclosed that the contract includes an option for a further year. Potentially keeping the 26-year-old at Naturena until June 2029. 'Yes, it's a three-year contract but it has a one-year option on it. That means he could stay at the club until June 2029,' the insider said. 'You know Thabo Cele is believed to also have played a part in convincing Nkanyiso (Shinga) to come. And join Chiefs as they know each other from KZN even before they left for Portugal.' Shinga has already arrived in South Africa and is one of the new signings Chiefs plan to unveil before heading to the Netherlands for their pre-season training camp. This signing forms part of a broader squad rebuild at Naturena. As the club looks to compete more seriously on both domestic and continental fronts in the 2025/2026 season. Lloyd Harris wins on sweltering Day 1 at Wimbledon
South Africa's top-ranked tennis player Lloyd Harris won his opening match at a sweltering Wimbledon and will now face a familiar foe in Russian Andrey Rublev. The 28-year-old Harris is on the comeback trail and featuring in his second Grand Slam of the year. Ironically given what's coming up, he came up against Rublev in the opening round in Paris and lost in four sets. The Russian is the No 14 seed at Wimbledon. In total, Harris and Rublev have met three times on the ATP tour, with Rublev holding a 3-0 record a dropping only one set in the process. Hottest opening day in Wimbledon history On Monday, with temperatures reaching 31 degrees Celsius to make it the hottest opening day in Wimbledon history, Harris won a gruelling four-set match against world No 50 Zizou Bergs, needing a touch over four hours to win 7-6 (9/7), 7-6 (7/2), 6-7 (7/5), 6-2 and reach the second round at SW19 for the third time in his career. Harris built his victory off the back of his powerful serve, as he nailed 23 aces in the tie. The opening set was dominated by the serve, resulting in a tiebreaker. Harris needed five set points, but he eventually took the set. The pair traded breaks on the second set on their way to another tiebreaker, which Harris dominated. Deep in the third, Bergs saved two match points to eventually force a tiebreaker which he won. But the wheels came off for Bergs in the fourth, as Harris ran off the first four games in 17 minutes on his way to victory. Harris reached the second round at Wimbledon in 2024, where he lost to Ben Shelton in four sets. The South African peaked on the world rankings at 31st in 2021, but a lack of tournaments has seen him fall outside the top 300. But Harris seems to find a way in the slams, going as deep as the quarter-finals of the US Open in 2021. Wiaan Mulder living the dream at No 3 after his career-best 147 sets up the Proteas for big win
Wiaan Mulder has taken control of the Proteas' No 3 position in the Test team after his career-best 147. Picture: BackpagePix Image: BackpagePix Proteas allrounder Wiaan Mulder is looking forward to an extended stay at No 3 after striking a career-best 147 in the first Test against Zimbabwe in Bulawayo. There has been plenty of consternation about the 27-year-old occupying the crucial first-drop position, especially in the recent World Test Championship Final against Australia at Lord's. Mulder had previously batted in the middle-order for both his domestic team, the Lions, and the Proteas, having scored his maiden Test century from No 7 last year against Bangladesh. However, the former St Stithians prodigy suffered a finger injury in the first Test against Sri Lanka last year, which forced Mulder to move up the order to No 3 as a stop-gap measure in the second innings. Never one to miss an opportunity, Proteas coach Shukri Conrad seized on the chance to bring in a seam-bowling allrounder - in the mould of the legendary Jacques Kallis - into the top six batting unit, and has run with Mulder there ever since. Conrad was further buoyed by Mulder's application against the much-vaunted Australian attack in the second innings and Lord's with his tactics reaping dividends at the Queens Sports Club. Mulder claimed 4/50 with the ball in Zimbabwe's first innings to complement his century. 'I think Shuks has had this view (batting at No 3) since I broke my finger that that's where our best balanced team or most balanced team is and I think the important thing is when the three big quicks come back, my role as a bowler gets a lot less or my responsibility as a bowler,' Mulder said. 'To be honest, wherever I fit in in the South African team is where I want to play. 'It's been my dream as a kid, still my dream consistently to play for South Africa. For me, it's the pinnacle and that's what I'll try and do as long as I can. 'And if that means batting at No 3, then I'm going to do my best to stay in the team and batting at 3.
