Donemana finish on right side of last-over drama to progress to Quarter-Finals in Irish Senior Cup
Merrion captain Max Sorensen had other ideas, and his five-wicket haul set up a tense finale that Donemana edged.
Earlier, Merrion's Australian professional Connor Blaxall-Hill top-scored with 109, adding 143 for the third wicket with John Anderson (64), but their middle and late-order has been their Achilles' heel and they failed to fire in the latter stages – all out for 222. That was to prove their downfall.
Lisburn and CIYMS made it three NI-based sides in the Quarter-Finals after they beat CSNI and Railway Union respectively.
Lisburn were in early trouble in the all-NCU clash, with Sean Davey's opening spell having them in trouble at 61 for four. Not for the first time in the 2025 season, Neil Whitworth and Nigel Jones got them out of a sticky situation in a fifth wicket stand worth 65.
Jones top-scored with 43, while Whitworth made 34 in a total of 180. It may not have looked too many, but an hour into the CSNI reply and they had stumbled to 55 for nine.
Josh Manley claimed a five-wicket haul, and there were two apiece for Ryan MacBeth and Adam Kennedy.
Paddy Beverland hit three sixes in a defiant 43 but it was all in vain as Lisburn won by 77 runs.
CIYMS produced a fine all-round display to oust Railway Union. Herman Rolfes hit eight fours and two sixes in a fine unbeaten 98 that propelled the Belmont side to 252 for six in 41 overs.
There were runs, too, for Chris Dougherty (53), Jack Beattie (30) and Carson McCullough (28).
The Dublin side looked threatening as opener Hedayat Khogiana thumped 11 fours and four sixes in a 79-ball century, adding 116 for the second wicket with Irish youth international Robert O'Brien.
It was very much in the balance at 161 for one in the 27th over, but teenage spinner Alex Armstrong broke the stand and went on to claim a five-wicket haul that included Ireland World Cup hero Kevin O'Brien in a 49-run win.
Instonians bowed out at Pembroke despite the hosts missing no fewer than six Irish internationals.
It was a seventh Andrew Balbirnie – surplus to requirements in T20Is – that was to be the match-winner. He survived an early lbw call to go on to make 118 (six fours, five sixes), sharing an opening stand of 102 with JJ Garth (40) as the hosts made 261 for seven.
The Shaw's Bridge reply was poor as they slumped to 115 for nine, given some respectability by a last wicket partnership of 50 between James Lambert (31 not out) and James Magee (20).
Coleraine must have thought they were in with a real chance against five-time winners North County after scoring 237 for three in 44 overs.
Louren Steenkamp made an even-time unbeaten 134 that included nine fours and six sixes, adding 177 in 30 overs with former Irish international David Cooke.
Brian Dunphy (86) and Jamie Grassi (79 not out) shared a match-winning fourth wicket stand of 156 to deny the Bannsiders.
Carrickfergus won a last-ball thriller at home to Fox Lodge to be the only NCU representative in the last-eight of the National Cup, while Isaac Bird scored 121 as Ballyspallen beat tournament favourites The Hills and Glendermott won a low-scoring game at St Johnston.
Meanwhile, Harry Brook's golden touch as England's white-ball captain continued as his side chased down 197 to clinch the T20 series with a four-wicket win over the West Indies in Bristol.
Brook has now won all five games since taking over from Jos Buttler and has the chance to match the 3-0 ODI whitewash in Southampton on Tuesday.

Man Utd open talks to sign £40m star after Andre Onana injury
Manchester United have opened concrete talks to sign Aston Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez, according to reports in Argentina. United have long been linked with a move for Martinez, who could be available for transfer this summer due to Villa's financial situation. The Red Devils were considering signing a new goalkeeper but were reportedly not ready to pull the trigger unless they could sell current first choice Andre Onana. However, United may have been forced to change tack after Onana picked up an injury in pre-season training which could rule him out of the start of the new Premier League season. Reports in Argentina from TyC Sports suggest the club have now begun club-to-club talks with Villa over a deal for the World Cup winner. Wake up to find news on your club in your inbox every morning with Metro's Football Newsletter. The report adds that Ruben Amorim sees the transfer as a 'priority', with United the most advanced of any clubs negotiating a deal for Martinez. The 32-year-old is said to be keen on a move to Old Trafford despite their woeful campaign last year, but has been coy when previously asked about his future. 'My future? I don't know, I come here to play for the national team, and that's the only thing that matters to me right now,' he said in June. 'Do I want to move to a new club? The transfer window just opened, so there's still a long way to go.' More Trending A fee of around £40-45million could be required to prise Martinez away from Villa, with Chelsea another club that were reportedly given the chance to sign the Argentine earlier in the window. Elsewhere, United are still looking to wrap up a deal for Brentford's Bryan Mbeumo to provide more attacking reinforcements following the singing of Matheus Cunha from Wolves. The Bees are said to be holding out for a £65m fee, but United are yet to return with a third bid after their first two were rejected. Such a delay in the deal is said to have frustrated Mbeumo, who has clearly indicated he would like to move to United this summer. For more stories like this, check our sport page. Kate Cross expects results under ‘queen of English cricket' Charlotte Edwards
Charlotte Edwards, who captained England to 50-over and T20 World Cup glory in 2009, replaced Jon Lewis as head coach in April and has just a few months to mould her team before the 2025 edition of the former competition in India and Sri Lanka. Edwards will send her side into the first of three one-day internationals against India in Southampton on Wednesday on the back of 3-2 T20 series defeat by the same opposition, with Cross confident her inspirational former captain can make a significant impact. ODI squad assemble! 😍 Training vibes high 👊 — England Cricket (@englandcricket) July 15, 2025 The Lancashire pace bowler said: 'She is the queen of English cricket, isn't she? 'I spoke in a press conference months ago about how Lottie was the captain that gave me my debut cap, so it's kind of like a full-circle moment for me where one of the best English cricketers to play the game is now leading the team. 'She's so passionate about English cricket and so passionate about women's cricket. She's the biggest badger I know – she's literally watched every ball that you bowl or every ball that you face, she's really on it. She's got about seven laptops, I think, to watch all the Blast games. 'But her knowledge around the game is just phenomenal, so I think we feel really lucky that we've had a coach with that sort of experience, but also with the career that she had in the game, come in to help guide us and make us a better team, so it's been brilliant.' Edwards has work to do as she attempts to restore England's fortunes after a difficult year which has included a 16-0 Ashes whitewash, and she has vowed to make fitness one of the key elements of her regime. However, Cross revealed she has set about her task with a smile on her face. She said: 'She's not just not changed at all. She's still the same Lottie that was my captain eight or nine years ago, so it's been really lovely for me personally to have her around. 'She's just great fun as well. She's always chuckling and making you laugh, which is a really nice place to be in an international dressing room.' England coach Charlotte Edwards, left, and opening batter Tammy Beaumont share a joke (Mike Egerton/PA) On the pitch, Nat Sciver-Brunt's side are still getting to grips with Edwards' philosophy, and Cross insists they need time to do that as they attempt to eradicate the failings which have cost them so dearly in recent times. She said: 'It's difficult. I know we're getting still quite a lot of press around our fielding. It's not where we want it to be and we know there's been some mistakes made in key moments. 'But hopefully if we can be judged in six months', eight months', 12 months' time when the new regime has had a chance to kind of bed in, then hopefully those comments that are made will be… not fairer, because I think the comments that were being made are quite fair at the moment. 'But you'll only then see the changes which will fit with the new regime that Lottie wants to bring in.'

Rangers leadership group revealed as Russell Martin flips the script on one transfer assumption
The new boss has shared details on his four key lieutenants in the dressing room and one may take you by surprise When a new manager comes into a football club it can hand players who struggled under the previous regime a clean slate. And that appears to be the case for forgotten midfielder Kieran Dowell at Rangers. The 27-year-old was brought to Ibrox by Michael Beale in the summer of 2023 but went onto make just 16 appearances in total in his first season, with Phillippe Clement replacing Beale less than four months after Dowell 's arrival. The former Everton youngster has been plagued with injury problems since heading north of the border but saw his minutes further restricted by Clement last season, so much so that he headed out to Birmingham City on loan back in January to get back on track. Dowell - an U20 World Cup winner with England - impressed with the EFL League One club, scoring five times in 19 league matches as the Blues romped to the title to secure immediate promotion back to the Championship. And while the playmaker and teammate Ben Davies - who also spent time on loan at Birmingham last season - were both expected to rejoin the big-spending West-Midlands club on a permanent basis, Dowell looks to have been handed a lifeline at Ibrox by new boss Russell Martin. The midfielder has featured in all three of the Light Blues friendly fixtures so far and scored in a 4-1 behind-closed doors win against Dunfermline on Tuesday. And Dowell's potentially important role in the new regime has been eluded to by his manager, with Martin including the player in a small group inside the dressing room who have been key in welcoming the raft of summer signings into the club. Speaking to the media at the England national team's St George's Park training complex on Tuesday, he said: "It's quite a quiet dressing room. There are a lot of people from different backgrounds and there are a lot of young guys. "But they have spent a lot of time together here and it is getting noisier. There is more noise, smiles and laughs coming out from the games and they are also digging in together. "When they have to run and work hard together, they are holding each other accountable in training. You could hear that today on the training pitch and that was so different to where we were two and a half weeks ago in terms of the noise. "The aggression and the way they compete is fantastic and we have to keep asking and driving for that. "But the guys who have came in have been great as we knew the characters we were bringing in. "The senior group of Tav (James Tavernier), Jack (Butland), Kieran Dowell and John Souttar are good guys and they have welcomed them and make sure they fell part of it. "Even if they are not really noisy they have done it in their own way, which is important."
