Proposed carbon tax won't hinder companies investing in Malaysia, PM Anwar assures French industry leaders
The Prime Minister said the proposed tax would be carried out cautiously and gradually, adding: 'We are finalising that in the next few months.'
'I know about the trend of decarbonisation (that is) strong and compelling but we have to be realistic. The proposed tax should not be seen as a problem at the expense of investing companies,' the prime minister said during a question and answer session at a round table with French captain of industries here on Friday (July 4).
More than 42 representatives from French companies and 18 from Malaysian companies attended the event.
The French representatives had positive remarks about working in Malaysia, with several of them noting they invested in Malaysia because they believed in it.
Anwar also said Malaysia, which focusses on neutrality, was friendly to all including having excellent relations with China, adding that having economic fundamentals remained the core focus.
'We engage and respond to all. At the end of the day, peace and stability are important in carrying out business. President Emmanuel Macron, speaking near the steps at the entrance of Palais de l'Elysee, said the two nations were now calling 'more than ever' for an agreement on a permanent ceasefire, the release of hostages, and unimpeded access for humanitarian aid, which is so desperately needed in Gaza. 'I commend the efforts of the mediators and call for the swift conclusion of the agreement currently on the table. 'A lasting solution cannot be achieved without reopening a clear political perspective based on the two-state solution — where two states live side by side in peace and security — allowing for the creation of a Palestinian state and full regional integration of Israel,' Macron, who hosted Anwar, said in French. He said in the immediate term, faced with an unbearable humanitarian situation, it is Israel's responsibility to allow the civilian population access to humanitarian aid. The president also said this concern for international law saw the absence of a legal basis for the retaliatory strikes on Iran and to call for a negotiated solution. Iran must unequivocally reaffirm its support for the Non-Proliferation Treaty and agree to a deal that would lead to the end of uranium enrichment in Iran — while allowing the country to benefit from the peaceful uses of nuclear energy, he added. Anwar, who stood next to Macron, lauded the latter for trying to resolve the outstanding conflict in Gaza. 'Of course, we have condemned the continued bombings and atrocities inflicted upon civilians, women and children, and it's a shame that international community is not able to resolve this. So your initiative was supported by us,' he said. Anwar also noted that he could not deny the issue of use of nuclear energy for peaceful means. 'Nuclear Non Proliferation, proliferation, or even power, cannot be seen to be selective,' he said. Malaysia too had also committed to the two state solution, he said, adding: 'We must impress upon Iran to use this for peaceful methods and peaceful means and allow for inspection which they have given commitment. But I think we have to follow through. And I think therefore, please be assured, President Macron that we will be here.' Later, the two leaders had an official working dinner followed by Anwar having a tete-a-tete with Macron, before flying off to Rio de Janeiro for the third and final leg of his visit to three cities.

Speaking after witnessing the signing ceremony here on Friday, Anwar said the acquisition will not only enable the airline to expand its network but also support Malaysia's aspiration to emerge as a leading aviation hub in Asia. AirAsia is buying US$12.25 billion (RM51.72 billion) worth of long-range Airbus 321XLR aircraft, with deliveries confirmed by 2028. The low-cost carrier inked a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Airbus in Paris today for 50 A321XLRs with conversion rights for another 20 A321XLRs, the new fleet of which are targeted to serve Central Asia, the Middle East and Europe, among others. The Prime Minister also witnessed the MoU exchange between 3P Capital Advisers and Ardian, a leading private investment firm from France, for the exploration of investment opportunities in the private markets. The private sector initiative can give Malaysians a wider access to alternative investments, Anwar said. Meanwhile, during his meeting with Imerys, an industrial mineral processing company that has been operating in Malaysia for over 25 years, Anwar said the company expressed its commitment to expand operations and support the development of a high-value, environmentally-friendly manufacturing sector in the country. In addition, Anwar held a meeting with the management of Arkema, a global leader in specialty chemicals, which is evaluating potential new investments in Malaysia. According to him, the company can potentially create more high-skilled jobs, expedite technology transfer, and enhance Malaysia's position as a major bioeconomy hub in the Asian region. Malaysia, France call for immediate Gaza ceasefire and aid delivery
PARIS: Malaysia and France have agreed that a ceasefire in Gaza must be implemented immediately, alongside efforts to ensure that humanitarian aid can be delivered without delay. This firm stance was conveyed by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and President Emmanuel Macron during their meeting at the Élysée Palace here. Anwar also praised Macron's commitment to resolving the crisis in Gaza, describing it as commendable. "We condemn the ongoing bombings and atrocities committed against civilians, women and children. "It is deeply saddening that the international community has yet to resolve this crisis," said Anwar. Macron, meanwhile, said that he and Anwar agreed a permanent ceasefire must be established in Gaza, in addition to the release of hostages. "We are working with several parties on this matter, including Saudi Arabia. "Israel must allow aid to reach Gaza," he said. Anwar added that Malaysia condemns Israel's attack on Iran and will continue to support France's efforts to promote peace in the Middle East. "If you say no to Iran and yes to Israel, then we have a problem. "We must try to resolve this. "I agree with you. We must emphasise to Iran that nuclear energy should only be used for peaceful purposes and through peaceful means, and that inspections, to which they have committed, must be allowed." Macron added that Iran must also clearly affirm its support for the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty and repeal legislation that restricts cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).
