Badgers hoping an improved culture will help them bounce back from a disappointing season
Strength coach Brady Collins organized an offseason contest in which he asked players to send him a photo whenever they went out with a teammate. Players were awarded points for each photo they sent, with a prize going to the position group with the highest score.
The Badgers said those types of activities helped make them much closer than they were a year ago.
'At the start, it sounds kind of silly, but then you get into it, and it's kind of like a game,' outside linebacker Aaron Witt said. 'Then it becomes natural. It went from forcing yourself to hang out with your teammates to actually wanting to be around them.'
Wisconsin knew it had to improve its culture after going 5-7 last year for its first losing season since 2001, snapping what had been the longest active streak of bowl appearances by any Power Four team.
This isn't quite what Wisconsin expected when it hired Luke Fickell, who went 53-10 with one College Football Playoff appearance in his final five seasons at Cincinnati. The Badgers' chemistry lessons continue Tuesday when they continue a Fickell tradition and open preseason camp by spending 1½ weeks at Platteville, Wisconsin, about 70 miles from campus
'Last year, I think a lot of guys kind of just gave up near the end of the season,' linebacker Christian Alliegro said. 'Guys weren't really close together and picking each other up. I think the big thing this offseason was getting the guys together and hanging out."
As it prepares to open the season Aug. 30 against Miami (Ohio), Wisconsin is relying heavily on several players who weren't part of last year's struggles.
The projected starting quarterback is Maryland transfer Billy Edwards Jr. Davis Heinzen, who started 36 consecutive games at Central Michigan, is likely to take over as the first-team left tackle after Kevin Heywood tore his anterior cruciate ligament in spring practice. Tennessee-Martin transfer Charles Perkins had an impressive spring and should boost a defense that allowed the second-most yards rushing per game of any Big Ten team last season.
But the Badgers also will need their returning players to remember what went wrong last year and to make sure history doesn't repeat itself. Wisconsin ended the 2024 season by losing five straight games for the first time since 1991. During that skid, the Badgers lost their three trophy games to Iowa, Nebraska and Minnesota by a combined margin of 110-42.
'Every week we started to believe in ourselves a little less,' outside linebacker Darryl Peterson said. 'As a leader, you take that upon yourself to make sure that doesn't happen again.'
The Badgers are confident that won't happen again because they know one another so much better. Older players were hanging out with younger players this offseason. The guys on offense spent more time interacting with their counterparts on defense.
They believe it will make a difference.
'The best teams in football are the closest teams,' offensive lineman Joe Brunner said. 'They might not be the most talented, but the closest teams are what create success on the football field because you trust one another. I don't think I've ever been this close to defensive guys on the team, and that's pretty special.'
Of course, it's easy to say that now. The true test will come the first time the Badgers encounter adversity on the field this fall.
Witt was asked Monday how he knows Wisconsin has corrected everything that went wrong a year ago.
'You don't,' Witt said. 'That's the thing. You've got to play the games. Everybody's going to stand in front of the camera and tell you we did this different, we're tougher, we're this, we're bigger, we're faster. But you'll see it on tape. We'll see it when games start.'

Hendrickson to headline wrestling event as Hulk Hogan's venture continues after his death
OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — Wyatt Hendrickson will face Egypt's Mostafa Aly Elsayed Gabr Elders in Real American Freestyle wrestling's main event on Aug. 30, the company announced Tuesday. RAF01, the company's inaugural event, will go on as planned at the Wolstein Center in Cleveland about a month after commissioner Hulk Hogan 's death. Chad Bronstein, Real American Freestyle's CEO and co-founder, said that's the way Hogan would have wanted it. 'From day one, he threw his weight behind this league,' Bronstein said of Hogan in a statement. 'He met with athletes. He watched tape, shared stories and showed up like only he could. RAF was personal to him, something bigger than all of us. This league is part of his legacy, and we intend to honor it.' Hendrickson beat Olympic gold medalist Gable Steveson to win the 285-pound national title at the NCAA Division I wrestling championships in March. Hendrickson's dramatic late takedown in the final gave the Oklahoma State heavyweight the 5-4 win, closed out a 27-0 season and ended Steveson's win streak at 70 matches. Hendrickson later won the Hodge Trophy as the nation's top men's college wrestler. Hogan was a fan of Hendrickson's and believed he embodied the spirit of Real American Freestyle. Hendrickson is an Air Force second lieutenant who celebrated with a United States flag after he defeated Steveson. Hendrickson's opponent was the final piece to complete the card. Elders was the African Games champion at 97 kilograms in 2024 and qualified for the 2024 Paris Olympics in that weight class. Other men's matchups include Bo Nickal vs. Jacob Cardenas; Yianni Diakomihalis vs. Bajrang Punia; Darrion Caldwell vs. Real Woods; and Austin Gomez vs. Lance Palmer. Women's matches scheduled are: Kennedy Blades vs. Alejandra Rivera; and Sarah Hildebrandt vs. Zeltzin Hernandez. The event will be streamed on FOX Nation. ___ AP sports: Cliff Brunt, The Associated Press

Reading Supporters' Trust 'disappointed' as club appoint gambling partners
Supporters Trust at Reading [STAR] have hit out at the club's decision to appoint an official betting sponsor for the new season. The relationship between gambling and football is something which has proved controversial in recent years, akin to the relationship between tobacco and alcoholic sponsors in other sports such as snooker and rugby. Premier League clubs have voted to withdraw gambling sponsorships on front of shirts as of next season, although there are currently no limitations for sleeve sponsors or advertising hoardings. Last week, Reading confirmed a new partnership with PricedUp, a UK-based online sports betting and gaming brand which will feature on training wear for the 2025/26 and 2026/27 seasons. The club state: "As part of the agreement, PricedUp will collaborate with the club to deliver exclusive offers and rewards designed to engage and benefit Royals supporters, while also working closely with Reading FC to promote and support responsible gambling practices." However, STAR have admitted that they are 'disappointed' with the decision. "We were as disappointed as I'm sure a lot of fans were, to see that we have a new betting sponsor," Chair Sarah Turner commented in her newsletter. " [It is]Not ideal, and I'm sure we'd rather a sponsor from other areas. "I think we have to be pragmatic and think that the club are working on improving things and the costs are huge. We have banged on about wanting to be sustainable - and that means using income from sponsorship. "It is, however, positive that the press release mentions that PricedUp will be working closely with Reading FC to promote and support responsible gambling practices and we look forward to seeing how this develops." Some supporters have also been less than impressed with the decision, although many have gone on to praise the club's pragmatism. Tim Kilpatrick, Head of Commercial at Reading, commented: 'We are naturally pleased to welcome PricedUp as our Official Betting Partner – in what is an important financial agreement for the club. To work with a UK company, who are forging their own story in their industry, aligns with our own growth ambitions and we're looking forward to supporting each other in reaching our goals.'

Jashari set for Milan medical tests in 24-48 hours
Ardon Jashari is expected in Italy tonight for a Milan medical over the next 24-48 hours after a deal was agreed with Club Brugge for a reported €34m plus add-ons, with significant tweaks to the format. The big breakthrough was reported yesterday evening and things progressed rapidly from there, with the Rossoneri agreeing to raise the fixed part of the fee compared to the add-ons. That means the ultimate cost of the operation remains circa €38m, but that the structure of the fee is changed. (Photo by Alex Bierens) According to that means €34m fixed, plus €4m in add-ons, with payment spread out over four years rather than five. Jashari had signed off on the personal terms weeks ago, a five-year contract worth €2.5m per season and rising. (Photo by) The player was crucial in getting this over the line by demanding a transfer to Milan, who he had supported since a childhood trip to San Siro, and rejecting more lucrative proposals from the likes of Neom. Now Club Brugge are releasing him to fly out and undergo the medical tests, so he is expected to arrive on Italian soil as early as this evening, undergoing the tests on Wednesday.
