GS1 to roll out next-generation barcodes by 2027 to boost transparency

GS1, the non-profit standards organisation that develops barcodes, is preparing to replace the current system with next-generation formats such as QR Codes powered by GS1 and GS1 DataMatrix. The global rollout is expected by 2027 and aims to improve product traceability and supply chain transparency.
The announcement was made at GS1's General Assembly held in Mumbai on Monday. The organisation said the transition will enable businesses, consumers and regulators to access product-specific information—including expiry dates, sourcing data and recall notices—through a single scan.
GS1 operates in 118 countries and supports over 2 million businesses. Its barcodes are scanned more than 10 billion times daily. As a neutral, not-for-profit entity, GS1 develops and maintains open standards used across retail, logistics, healthcare, agriculture and other sectors.
'In the next phase, every product will carry barcodes that provide structured data rather than just price and identity,' said Renaud de Barbuat, President and CEO of GS1 Global. 'The focus is on improving identification, traceability and information-sharing.'
In India, GS1 standards are already used in national programmes such as FASTag, Ayushman Bharat and ROHINI (a hospital registry). GS1 India, the local affiliate, is working with the government and private sector to expand the adoption of advanced barcodes across healthcare and retail.
S. Swaminathan, CEO of GS1 India, said the upgraded barcode version could help track the movement of medicines, medical devices and agricultural goods through standardised labelling. The organisation is working with health agencies to integrate the system into Ayushman Bharat for inventory management and cost tracking.
India is one of GS1's fastest-growing markets. The organisation cited India's scale, digital transformation and the government's efforts to strengthen the drug supply chain as key factors in making the country central to GS1's Vision 2030 roadmap. The roadmap includes unifying global operations, modernising identification systems and enhancing infrastructure to support digital commerce and logistics.
According to the GS1 management board, India's significance lies in both its manufacturing base—particularly in pharmaceuticals and medical devices—and its expanding consumer market. GS1 stressed the need for Indian supply chains to align with global standards as international trade becomes more interconnected.
The new barcode system is being positioned as a tool to verify product authenticity in sectors such as pharmaceuticals. Hospitals and pharmacies will be able to scan a medicine pack to confirm its origin, manufacturing date and batch number. GS1 said this can aid in product recalls and reduce the spread of substandard or counterfeit drugs.
The transition from traditional 1D barcodes to 2D formats like QR Codes will occur over the next two years, with full implementation planned by 2027. GS1 is working with stakeholders to ensure that systems are upgraded to read and process the new codes. These barcodes are also compatible with smartphone cameras, allowing broader accessibility without the need for proprietary scanners.
The upgraded barcodes will be structured to support integration with technologies such as artificial intelligence and blockchain, especially for applications requiring secure and multi-party data sharing.
Mark Batenic, Chairman of the GS1 Global Board, said coordination between local affiliates and central teams is underway to develop consistent implementation guidelines for both developed and emerging markets. The new standards will remain open and technology-neutral to ensure scalability.
GS1's Vision 2030, also presented at the General Assembly, outlines plans to unify operations under the 'One GS1' framework and expand its identification systems' use in digital commerce and logistics.
The organisation does not develop or sell commercial products but provides the infrastructure for global data exchange. It remains funded through membership fees and related services, not through product sales.
Current barcodes will remain valid during the transition. Businesses will be required to update packaging, point-of-sale systems and inventory management software to support the new standard.

Kuppam hosp gets AP's first digital nerve centre

1 2 Tirupati: In a landmark development for healthcare, the first-ever digital nerve centre was inaugurated today at Kuppam Area Hospital by chief minister N Chandrababu Naidu . This facility aims to integrate patient medical records across hospitals and primary healthcare centres, marking a pioneering step in the state's digital health initiative. Supported by the Gates Foundation, the Tata Digi Nerve Centre in Kuppam serves as a pilot project connecting 13 primary healthcare centres (PHCs) virtually. Alongside health minister Satyakumar Yadav, the CM linked these PHCs to the centre and directed health officials to expand services. Addressing the public, Naidu said, "In phase two, all PHCs in Chittoor district will be integrated, followed by a statewide rollout. We plan to digitize health histories and enhance medical services by coordinating Ayushman Bharat with the NTR Vaidya Seva scheme. The Digital Nerve Centre in Kuppam will serve as a global model, incorporating advanced technologies like Artificial Intelligence. It should also connect with ANMs and Anganwadis. " The CM stressed using technology to reduce healthcare costs, currently Rs 19,000 crore, through data-driven medicine provision, preventive health, and real-time monitoring using cost-effective wearables. Mobile medical units will conduct quarterly blood tests, and health monitoring of pregnant women will be prioritised. The centre links Kuppam Area Hospital with 13 PHCs and 92 Village Health Centres, offering integrated services such as continuous health monitoring, timely diagnosis, specialist consultations, and coordination with government schemes and private hospitals. Initially implemented in Kuppam, the programme will expand to Chittoor district and eventually across the state.

Among the individual stocks, Aster DM Healthcare has surged 7 per cent to ₹638.60, on the back of a 20-fold jump in average trading volumes. A combined 16.06 million equity shares representing 3.2 per cent of total equity of the company have changed hands on the NSE and BSE. In comparison, the BSE Sensex was up 0.18 per cent at 83,562 at 02:07 PM. What's driving hospital stocks? According to CRISIL MI&A Research, the Indian healthcare delivery industry is projected to experience major growth, with a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 9-11 per cent anticipated between fiscal years 2025 and 2027. This growth trajectory is underpinned by several long term structural factors, including rising healthcare needs due to demographic shifts and increasing chronic disease prevalence. Additionally, the industry's strong fundamentals, coupled with improving affordability among the population, are expected to drive demand for healthcare services. Furthermore, the potential impact of initiatives such as the Ayushman Bharat scheme, aimed at providing universal health coverage, is poised to further propel industry growth during this period. With sustained support from long-term structural factors, renewed emphasis on the Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (PMJAY), and heightened Government focus on the healthcare sector, the healthcare delivery market is projected to expand at a CAGR of approximately 9-11 per cent, reaching ₹8.6 trillion by fiscal 2027, Apollo Hospital said in its annual report. Given the major mismatch between demand and supply for quality beds, along with the improved financial health of corporate hospitals following the pandemic, players appear well-positioned to achieve profitable growth as they strengthen their presence in core markets and venture into Tier 2+ areas geographies, CareEdge Ratings said. CareEdge Ratings forecasts that the corporate hospital chains in its coverage will achieve approximately 10-12 per cent year-on-year sales growth in fiscal 2026, driven by a 5-6 per cent increase in Average Revenue Per Occupied Bed (ARPOB), a 100-200 basis point (bps) improvement in occupancy, and rise in new bed additions. With significant untapped market opportunities and a shortage of healthcare infrastructure in India, leading Indian companies have immense potential for expansion. Supported by long-term structural growth factors, renewed momentum from PMJAY, and increased government focus on the healthcare sector, the Indian hospital sector is projected to grow at a CAGR of 10-11 per cent over the next 3-5 years. Key demand drivers include the rise in lifestyle-related diseases, growing medical tourism, increasing incomes, and demographic changes. With limited government capital expenditure and a lack of infrastructure, the private sector is expected to experience accelerated growth in the years to come, CareEdge Ratings said in its March 2025 report.

NHAI will tie up with Google Maps to chalk out routes with low toll charges

NEW DELHI: The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) is working with Google Maps to introduce a new feature in its Rajmargyatra mobile application, which will suggest different routes, including an alternative with lowest toll charges to the motorists. This service will be available from next month. Officials said that the highway users would be at liberty to choose a route to reach a destination as per their convenience to save travelling time or toll fee. 'There are two best possible routes to reach Agra from Delhi. One can take the Yamuna Expressway or National Highway 44 (Mathura Road). The app will inform users which route will attract a lower toll,' said officials. Google Maps provides live traffic data and real-time GPS navigation for driving, walking, cycling and public transport. It also suggests routes with estimated toll charges. Moreover, it offers options to avoid tolls entirely or prioritise routes based on the preferences of the user. The move is being seen as another strategic attempt by the NHAI to increase downloads and usage of the Rajmargyatra app. A dedicated link for activation and renewal of annual FASTag pass for non-commercial private vehicles will also be made available on the app next month. In a transformative step towards hassle-free highway travel, Union Road Transport and Highways minister Nitin Gadkari last month announced the plan to launch a pass that will cost `3,000. It will be valid for one year from the date of activation or up to 200 trips, whichever is earlier.
