Agenda of sustainable economic progress being implemented: Ahsan
'The government is pursuing a goal of achieving taking economy of Pakistan to one trillion dollar by the year 2035,' Ahsan said, adding: 'Our development model is to transform economic development through exports.'
While inaugurating a modern classroom at the Pakistan Administrative Staff College (PASC)/ National School of Public Policy (NSPP) here Monday, Ahsan presented a comprehensive roadmap for governance reforms and institutional performance improvement, emphasising the transition from a procedure-focused to a mission-driven bureaucracy.
'The country is facing a crucial moment requiring data-driven, technology-enabled and accountable governance,' he said, adding: 'We must build institutions that are policy-consistent and shielded from political volatility, ensure transparency in decision-making, foster agility to respond to changing demands and instil responsibility in the use of public resources.'
Ahsan Iqbal outlined the government's long-term economic vision under the banner of 'URAAN Pakistan', which aims at making Pakistan a $1 trillion economy by 2035. He said the strategy is built on the five pillars of the 5Es: Exports, E-Pakistan, Environment, Energy & Infrastructure and Equity & Empowerment.
The minister said steps are being taken to restore public confidence in good governance, by following the policy of making bureaucracy a stable, transparent, agile and responsible. He also urged the officers to play a leading role in enabling export-led growth, digitising government operations, building climate resilience, improving infrastructure delivery and ensuring inclusive development. He said the civil servants must play their vital role for Pakistan's transformation, adding that the system must be reformed to deliver better outcomes.
He introduced the STAR model — Stable, Transparent, Agile and Responsible — as a governance framework to guide civil service transformation. He commended the role of civil servants to make the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) a success which showed the dedication of Pakistan's civil servants. He reminded the participants that public service is a responsibility and leadership in Islam is a duty, not a privilege.
The minister encouraged the course participants to take part in the training with a spirit of service, creativity and commitment to the national development.

PTI to take loyalty oaths from lawmakers amid defection fears
Listen to article In a move reflective of deepening political unease, the parliamentary party of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has decided to administer fresh loyalty oaths to its lawmakers, amid concerns of possible defections following a Supreme Court verdict on reserved seats. According to a report by Express News on Tuesday, the PTI has convened a crucial meeting of its parliamentary party in Islamabad on Wednesday. All members of the national and provincial assemblies affiliated with the party have been directed to attend. Party insiders said that the primary focus of the meeting will be the evolving political dynamics in light of the apex court's recent decision, which stripped PTI of its claim to nearly 80 reserved seats in national and provincial legislatures. Discussions will also centre around the political calculus in Punjab and Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (K-P), where shifting alliances could prove pivotal in the coming days. Read More: PTI loses court battle for reserved seats Particularly in K-P, where PTI-backed independents hold sway, the party leadership remains wary of overtures by rival political forces. Thirty-five of these independents—previously aligned with PTI—are expected to retake loyalty pledges, reaffirming their commitment to the party. Sources confirmed that a similar oath-taking exercise had been carried out post-elections, but fresh fears of desertions have prompted renewed action. The Supreme Court's short order, issued last week, overturned a July 12, 2024 verdict that had restored PTI's status as a parliamentary party and granted it access to reserved seats. The recent ruling has significantly altered the balance of power in the National Assembly, bolstering the position of the ruling coalition, which now stands within reach of a two-thirds majority—an outcome with far-reaching implications for constitutional amendments and governance.

FY25: gold shines with robust 45% return in Pakistan
Gold, considered a hedge during times of uncertainty, gave 45% return to investors in Pakistan in the fiscal year 2024-25, when compared to its per tola rate on the last day of the FY2023-24. According to the All Pakistan Gems and Jewellers Sarafa Association (APGJSA), gold price per tola on June 30, 2025 stood at Rs350,200 in Pakistan, against Rs241,700 on June 29, 2024. 'The increase in gold prices in Pakistan was mainly in line with rise in international rates,' local trader Abdullah Abdul Razzak Chand told Business Recorder. As per data shared by the APGJSA, international rate of gold increased by $956 to reach $3,282 per ounce in FY25, against $2,326 per ounce it had stood at on the last day of FY24. Chand mentioned that geopolitical tensions largely contributed to the increase in international rate of gold. 'Investors moved to safe haven assets amid Russia-Ukraine war, Gaza crisis, Pakistan-India tensions, and Iran-Israel war in FY25,' he said. 'Rupee-dollar parity did not have a significant impact on gold prices in Pakistan.' Pakistan rupee ended the fiscal year 2024-25 at 283.76 level against the US dollar, down by 1.95% or Rs5.42 against 278.34 it had closed at on the last session of FY2023-24. However, with rising import demand in the country, analysts are seeing the rupee at 292-294 level against the dollar. 'If the rupee depreciates, gold prices will increase further along with other imports in Pakistan,' Chand envisaged. Meanwhile, the recent US-China trade deal on how to expedite rare earth shipments to the US has brought hopes of a slowdown in geopolitics in the fiscal year 2025-26. Citibank, US banking subsidiary of Citigroup that is a financial services multinational corporation, expects the price of gold to consolidate around $3,100 to $3,500 per ounce in the third quarter. 'We expect continued price consolidation … and highlight our view that we may have already seen the highs at $3,500/oz in late April as the gold market deficit is peaking soon if not already,' Citi said in the note.
