Iranian students in Pune lament Iran-Israel conflict: We just want a normal life
As tensions between Iran and Israel continue to rise following recent airstrikes and retaliatory attacks, Iranian students studying in Pune are quietly grappling with fear, sadness, and a longing for peace.
'All of us are affected, not just me. Whether it is people back home or people here, it is impossible not to feel the impact of something like this,' said an Iranian student who did not want to be named.
His companion expressed similar emotions, 'It is heartbreaking to see people in my country dying. Even though I am far away, I think about my family and friends back home every day. No one knows what might happen next,' she said.
She continued, 'Innocent people are caught in a conflict they didn't choose, yet they are the ones suffering the consequences.'
For many Iranian students across the city, the emotional weight of the conflict is hard to put into words. One student shared a more reflective view, shaped by his identity as a traveler. 'I do not belong to any political side. I am not defined by borders or religion but when people die, it is always tragic.'
'Whether it is the Air India plane crash or a bombing, any loss of human life is painful. All this destruction is deeply sad. I just want to live a normal life like anyone else,' he said.
When asked about the possibility of peace, the students offered different perspectives but shared a common desire for an end to violence. 'I believe peace is possible, but only if the governments truly want it. Right now, war benefits political and economic agendas. That is why innocent people continue to suffer,' said a student.
Another added, 'Yes, I believe there is a chance for peace, but only if the governments truly want it. Even now, with the ongoing nuclear talks, there is an opportunity to move toward peace. At the end of the day, borders are man-made. What truly matters is that we are all people with the same hopes, fears, and dreams, living in overlapping cultures.'

Iranian President Pezeshkian in Pakistan to strengthen bilateral ties
Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian arrived in Pakistan on Saturday (August 2, 2025) on a two-day state visit aimed at strengthening ties and increasing bilateral trade volume to $10 billion annually. 'The two leaders reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening Pakistan-Iran ties, with a focus on expanding cooperation in regional stability, trade, and economic collaboration. They also discussed enhancing bilateral engagement across key areas of mutual interest,' the Foreign Office (FO) said in a post on X. Main meetings of the Iranian president are scheduled for Sunday (August 3, 2025). President Pezeshkian will meet with Pakistan President Asif Ali Zardari and hold delegation-level talks with Prime Minister Sharif. Earlier in the morning, former prime minister Nawaz Sharif, Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz and Federal Housing Minister Raiz Hussain Pirzada received Mr. Pezeshkian on arrival in Lahore, the Foreign Office (FO) said. During his brief stay in Lahore, he had a meeting with Nawaz Sharif. President Pezeshkian also visited the mausoleum of poet Allama Iqbal, who is still popular in Iran due to his Persian poetry. This marks Mr. Pezeshkian's first official visit to Pakistan as President of Iran. 'The visit is expected to further strengthen the brotherly relations between Pakistan and Iran,' the FO added. Prime Minister Sharif had visited Iran on May 26.

Air India privatisation a disaster, says Manish Tewari
Congress leader Manish Tewari called the government's decision to privatise Air India and transfer its ownership to the Tata Group a 'disaster' over complaints about cancellations and delays, and described the airline as a 'management mess'. 'The Government of India should take Air India back from the Tata Group. They have run the airline into the ground,' he wrote in a post on X on Friday (August 1, 2025), calling the privatisation exercise a 'disaster'. He lamented the cancellations and delays by Air India 'at the drop of a hat', and claimed that these were happening without any explanations being offered by the airline. In a reference to appointees from Tata Group companies at the airline, he remarked that 'pilots and crew tell me that people who grow tea in Tata Tea, make steel in Tata Steel, make cars in Tata Motors are running Air India' and labelled the airline as a complete management mess. Tata Group took over Air India in January 2022 after it won the bid invited by the government for selling its 100% stake in the erstwhile national carrier. The airline has been at the centre of public and regulatory scrutiny since the June 12 crash in Ahmedabad that killed 260 people, the deadliest crash in the country in three decades, and the first involving a Boeing 787-8 aircraft.
