MBS' new development part of S'pore's broader, more ambitious transformation: PM Wong
SINGAPORE - Singapore's skyline will get a soaring new addition come 2030 when Marina Bay Sands' US$8 billion (S$10.3 billion) fourth hotel tower is complete.
Speaking at the development's ground-breaking ceremony on July 15, Prime Minister Lawrence Wong said the plans for Marina Bay is just one part of the Republic's broader, more ambitious transformation of its entire southern waterfront.
A 30km stretch of coastline from Gardens by the Bay East to Pasir Panjang that is six times the size of Marina Bay, it will have more commercial, recreational and entertainment options, alongside new residential precincts that include public housing for Singaporeans, he added.
The authorities said in May that the first of these homes,
around 1,000 Housing Board Build-To-Order (BTO) flats to be built on the site of the former Keppel Club, will be launched for sale in October.
PM Wong said: 'That's what we mean when we say we are never done building Singapore. We will always keep on improving, keep renewing and keep on moving forward.'
The Greater Southern Waterfront project was first announced by then-prime minister Lee Hsien Loong at the 2013 National Day Rally, where he outlined a vision to consolidate container port activities in Tanjong Pagar, Keppel, Brani and Pasir Panjang to a unified port in Tuas, freeing up prime waterfront land for redevelopment.
Mr Wong was addressing about 200 guests gathered at the groundbreaking site next to MBS' Hotel Tower 1, who included Las Vegas Sands co-founder Miriam Adelson, chairman and chief executive officer Robert Goldstein, and president and chief operating officer Patrick Dumont.

The new MBS complex will comprise 570 luxury hotel suites, a casino, a 15,000-seat entertainment arena, 200,000 sq ft of meeting and convention space, and numerous high-end restaurants. It is set to be completed by 2030, and to open in the first quarter of 2031.

Like MBS, it is designed by US-based firm Safdie Architects, and it will have a distinct roof in the form of an elliptical Skyloop which has 360-degree views, and both public and private facilities.
Mr Wong called Marina Bay a symbol of the Singapore Story - that of a thriving financial and business hub, a vibrant destination for meetings, conventions, tourism and entertainment, as well as a key node connecting Singapore to the global economy.
But more than just an economic success story, it has become deeply embedded in the national consciousness, he added.
This is as the bay is where Singaporeans come together to celebrate milestones such as
the National Day Parade and year-end countdowns, and to make memories. The skyline is also instantly recognisable around the world as being Singapore, said PM Wong, whether in movies, documentaries, or music videos.
'Every recruit that does basic military training, their graduation parades are held here, reminding them of why they are defending Singapore and what they are defending,' he said.
'So we are very proud of what Marina Bay has become, but we're not done yet because we believe the best still lies ahead.'
He noted that MBS' expansion will both refresh Singapore's skyline and introduce new attractions, including the rooftop Skyloop and the 15,000-seat arena for world-class concerts and performances.
Added convention and exhibition space also further strengthens Singapore's position as a leading Mice (meetings, incentives, conferences and exhibitions) destination globally, he added.
Alongside
the upcoming NS Square which is set to be completed by 2027, PM Wong said these developments will add buzz and vibrancy to the bay area, which will draw more visitors and create new opportunities for Singaporeans in hospitality and tourism.
Singapore is able to keep renewing itself and moving forward because of strong partnerships, such as with Las Vegas Sands, said PM Wong.
He noted its 'bold commitment' when the integrated resort was first mooted in 2005. The American casino and resort company committed to an initial investment of $3.85 billion, which is apart from another $1.2 billion in land cost for the site.

'It was...a major investment, underpinned by confidence in Singapore, and in Singapore's future,' he said. 'I'm glad this partnership has flourished, and I'm even happier that we are now taking it to the next level.'
Mr Goldstein said that Marina Bay Sands has become the most successful integrated resort in history and the industry's gold standard since it opened in 2010.
'We have every intention of delivering a product that will be the envy of the hospitality industry and ushers in a new era of luxury tourism in Singapore,' the Las Vegas Sands chairman and CEO said of the new tower.

SINGAPORE – Laws against fake news and manipulated content during elections will continue to be essential in safeguarding Singaporeans against information threats, but by themselves are not enough to push back against misinformation, Minister for Digital Development and Information Josephine Teo said on July 16. Instead, the Republic must try and prevent 'cracks in our infrastructure of fact', which pave the way for rogue actors to dominate its media and information landscape, as has happened elsewhere, said Mrs Teo. That is why the Government has stepped in to support public service media, she added, which ensures that Singaporeans have continued access to trusted news sources and to uphold the integrity of the city-state's infospace. 'Our long-term goal remains unchanged, and that is to nurture a resilient information ecosystem – one where truth can stand on its own, and public trust is anchored in an informed, engaged and discerning citizenry,' she said at the Singapore Press Club Awards 2025 held at Pan Pacific Singapore. These efforts to counter misinformation are crucial because Singapore, as a diverse and open society, will always be susceptible to the dangers of misinformation, she said. Mrs Teo cited examples from the 2020 general election, when there were falsehoods on projected population figures and Covid-19 testing of foreign workers; and the 2023 presidential election, when there was a false claim that the Government could trace how individuals voted and penalise them for their choices. Lies also tend to travel faster than the truth, she added. 'We are realistic that a factual correction does not reach everyone who had seen the falsehood.' The risks during the recent May 3 general election were much greater with the availability of AI-generated deepfakes, she noted. A compressed election timeline - there were nine days of campaigning during GE2025 - meant that the window to react was extremely narrow, said Mrs Teo. 'We therefore needed to be absolutely clear what was permitted and what was not, and who was accountable for validating the suspected content,' she added. In October 2024, authorities put in new safeguards when it amended election laws. The Elections (Integrity of Online Advertising) (Amendment) Act, or Eliona, prohibits digitally generated or manipulated election-related content that realistically misrepresents a candidate's speech or actions during the election period. Candidates have to declare whether content featuring them was true or false, and a wrongful declaration could have led to the result of their election being voided. Thankfully, GE2025 did not see a surge in egregious misinformation or malicious synthetic content, said Mrs Teo. Neither Pofma nor Eliona were invoked during the recent election. She added that Singapore is fortunate that its public service media remain trusted institutions, with the recent Reuters Digital News Report having found that 75 per cent of respondents trusted The Straits Times , while 74 per cent trusted CNA. 'These are outstanding achievements, especially when compared against the global average trust in media, which stands at just around 40 per cent,' she noted. Going forward, Mrs Teo said public service media has to continue developing the right talent and instincts to provide quality journalistic content to Singaporeans. 'Content is still key. Information is the currency of the industry, and your insight is what sets you apart from the rest. This is also your mission and duty to your audiences,' she said to a room of over 250 guests, including journalists past and present. Media outlets here must also keep pace with technology and the changing preferences of audiences by investing in new capabilities, adopting new processes and creating new products. She cited SPH Media's in-house multimedia facility Studio+65, which allows for virtual production, audiovisual storytelling and digital content creation. Mediacorp has also deployed AI in its newsrooms, automating translation and subtitling processes, she noted. In her speech, Mrs Teo spotlighted some award winners for innovating and finding new ways of bringing important stories to readers. They included ST senior correspondent Stephanie Yeo, who won a health journalism award for her well-researched reports on women's health issues that raised awareness of conditions such as endometriosis and menopause and their available treatment options. Endometriosis is a condition where menstruation tissue is found outside the womb. Mrs Teo said public service media in Singapore has defied the odds and avoided the fates of many of their international counterparts, and that generations of journalists played an important role in fostering a thriving and vibrant media ecosystem here. 'It is fair to say that journalism has never been an easy job, and it has become only harder in recent decades. But you have soldiered on with a tireless commitment to excellence,' she said. 'Your dedication to the craft has been instrumental in upholding truth and trust in Singapore's information space, shaping an informed audience and a stronger Singapore.'

Khamenei says Israel war meant to 'overthrow system' in Iran
TEHRAN: Iran's supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said on Wednesday (Jul 16) that Israel's attacks during last month's 12-day war were intended to weaken the Islamic republic's system and spark unrest to topple it. "The calculation and plan of the aggressors was to weaken the system by targeting certain figures and sensitive centres in Iran," said Khamenei during a meeting with judiciary officials. During the meeting, excerpts of which were published in videos on his website, he said the move was meant to stir "unrest and bring people into the streets to overthrow the system". Israel launched an unprecedented bombing campaign against Iran on Jun 13, killing top military commanders and nuclear scientists. Iranian authorities said more than 1,000 people were killed in Iran. During the war, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu told Fox News that the Israeli strikes "certainly could" bring about a change in the Iranian system. "The Iranian regime is very weak," he said during the interview on Jun 15. Iran responded to the Israeli attacks with drone and missile fire, killing 28 people in Israel, according to Israeli authorities. On Jun 22, Israel's ally, the United States, launched unprecedented strikes of its own on Iranian nuclear facilities at Fordo, Isfahan and Natanz. Iran hit back with missile strikes on the US Al-Udaid airbase in Qatar, which Khamenei described on Wednesday as a "big blow" to the US and warned that "even greater strikes can be dealt to the US and others". A ceasefire between Iran and Israel has been in place since Jun 24. Israel's attacks took place two days before Iran and the US were scheduled to meet for a sixth round of nuclear talks which had begun on Apr 12. The talks have not since resumed. Tehran has reiterated that it remains open to diplomacy provided that Washington offers guarantees it will not resort to military action against the Islamic republic. On Wednesday, Iran's parliament ruled out negotiations without meeting certain "preconditions", not giving specifics. Khamenei said Iranian diplomats and the military should exercise "care and precision" in the path ahead, without elaborating.
