Hijacking syndicate members nabbed in Evaton West
Police spokesperson, Constable Thulisile Msibi said that the operation was launched following intelligence received from an informant, which indicated that suspects who had hijacked a vehicle in Randfontein were transporting it to Evaton West to be 'cooled off' and later sold to an unknown buyer in the area.
The syndicate was reported to be using a white Audi as an escort vehicle and a red VW Polo identified as the hijacked vehicle.
The team intercepted the suspects on Moakedi Street in Evaton West.
'Upon arrival, one suspect was found inside the red Polo, which was later confirmed to be hijacked under a case opened in Mohlakeng. Three suspects were discovered in the white Audi, that was 'escorting' the stolen vehicle,' Msibi confirmed.
Police recovered one unlicensed firearm with its serial number filed off, along with 19 rounds of live ammunition, inside the Audi. All three suspects were arrested and charged with possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition, and possession of a hijacked vehicle.

(Photo by Gallo Images/Fani Mahuntsi) The Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) board has suspended CEO Adv. Makhosini Msibi for 30 days after allegations of financial misconduct and governance lapses surfaced. The Department of Transport announced on Friday that Deputy Minister of Transport Mkhuleko Hlengwa was informed of Msibi's precautionary suspension by the RTMC board of directors following a board meeting on 13 June. Msibi's suspension took effect on 1 July 2025. He will remain suspended for 30 days with the possibility of an extension to 60 days or longer if necessary. RTMC CEO suspended following whistleblower claims 'In its letter to the ministry, the board indicated that it took this decision following whistleblowing allegations of financial misconduct, irregular expenditure and governance failures at the entity,' the department said. 'Based on the seriousness of the allegations, the board has taken a decision to institute a forensic investigation into these allegations.' Refilwe Mongale has been appointed as interim CEO until further notice to ensure continuity and stability with the corporation while the forensic investigation is underway. The board appointed Msibi as CEO in 2003 and, last year, awarded him a R3.9 million performance bonus. The spokesperson confirmed that the bonus was one of the issues under scrutiny. R3.9m bonus under scrutiny 'I suppose the board will have to look into that and also the issue of governance. It also relates to how the board managed to oversee all this under their watch,' he said. He added that Minister of Transport Barbara Creecy is focusing on clean governance, and she is supportive of investigations that lead to this outcome. 'We also don't want to judge people that they are already guilty when the investigations are not even completed,' the spokesperson said. Khutsong family traumatised after armed robbery and teen's disappearance
A family from Khutsong Extension 6 experienced a terrifying ordeal in the early hours of Monday, July 7, when armed robbers stormed into their home, assaulted them, and kidnapped their 14-year-old son. According to a reliable source, the family was asleep in their electricity-starved home—an area that has been without power for over a week—when they were abruptly awakened by a loud noise at around 01:00. Moments later, three men wearing balaclavas and speaking Sesotho forced their way inside. Armed with a 9mm pistol and a rifle, the intruders demanded money, quickly seizing all the cash in the house. The parents were then forced to lie face-down on their bed at gunpoint while the robbers searched the home. The assailants stole several valuables, including cellphones, one of which belonged to a neighbour who had left it there for charging. They also took the keys to the family's black VW Polo, which had Lesotho number plates. As the ordeal unfolded, the family reported hearing gunshots. When the parents got up to investigate, they found their vehicle missing—and their 14-year-old son had vanished. By the time of publication, the teenager had still not been located, and the police investigation is ongoing. At Caxton, we employ humans to generate daily fresh news, not AI intervention.
