Top Vanderbilt baseball prospects to know for 2025 MLB Draft
The Commodores have had at least four players selected in every draft since 2004. In 2024, Vanderbilt did not have a first-round pick for the first time since 2018 but had seven players selected overall, including six in the top 10 rounds.
Vanderbilt is likely to see 4-6 players selected from the 2025 roster. Several incoming high school signees could be selected as well.
Here are the top names with Commodores ties to watch for:
Top Vanderbilt baseball prospects for 2025 MLB Draft
LHP JD Thompson
MLB Pipeline rank: No. 66
Thompson was seen as a likely second-round pick entering the season and his stock remained there as he put up similar numbers to 2024, albeit this time in a Friday night role. In three seasons with the Commodores, Thompson put up a 4.28 ERA and 219 strikeouts in 164 career innings. In 2025, he tied for seventh nationally with 122 strikeouts.
Thompson's fastball, which gets up to 96 mph, is his best pitch, and he's an above-average strike-thrower as well. Most believe Thompson lands in the second round, the same range where teammates Bryce Cunningham and Carter Holton went a year ago.
OF RJ Austin
MLB Pipeline rank: No. 112
After a strong sophomore season that saw him hit .335 while leading the SEC in stolen bases, Austin regressed in his junior year to numbers more similar to what he put up as a freshman. He hit .257 with just two home runs. The good news is that he proved he can play center field, even winning the Rawlings Gold Glove award in his first year at the position.
Although that has hurt Austin's draft stock, most believe that Austin's athleticism and defensive ability will get him selected in the fourth or fifth round.
RHP Cody Bowker
MLB Pipeline rank: No. 187
Bowker's stock is a bit polarizing, as some analysts see him as worthy of a top-five round pick, while others think he belongs in the back half of the top 10 rounds.
After transferring from Georgetown, Bowker had a successful season in Vanderbilt's rotation. He took every turn in the rotation and had a 4.38 ERA with 99 strikeouts in 72 innings. His fastball is his best pitch, getting up to 95 mph from a low arm slot. But he had trouble going deep into games, as he completed five innings in just five of his 16 starts.
RHP Sawyer Hawks
MLB Pipeline rank: No. 225
Hawks is an under-the-radar prospect despite receiving multiple All-American nods after a season in which he had a 1.60 ERA, a 4-0 record and eight saves in 18 appearances, with a 59-11 strikeout to walk ratio.
After transferring from Air Force, then missing most of 2024 with injury, Hawks remade his pitch mix in 2025 to include a fastball, slider and changeup along with his curve. He likely fits in rounds 6-10.
1B Riley Nelson
MLB Pipeline rank: Unranked
Nelson has a decision to make, as there will certainly be pro teams interested in him, but will they be interested enough to buy him out of a senior year?
Nelson was Vanderbilt's best hitter in 2025, hitting .344 with a 34:36 walk-to-strikeout ratio, and he performed just as well in SEC play. But he doesn't have big power (eight home runs) and MLB teams often shy away from first basemen without double-digit homers.

Top 2025 MLB Draft prospects among Vanderbilt baseball signees
RHP Seth Hernandez
MLB Pipeline rank: No. 3
Hernandez, a pitcher whose fastball touches 98 mph, is seen by some as a top-five talent and by others as a mid-first rounder. Either way, Hernandez won't make it to campus, barring an unexpected development.
OF Slater de Brun
MLB Pipeline rank: No. 24
de Brun is a 5-foot-9 center fielder who projects as a leadoff profile. He's a spark plug type that Vanderbilt has traditionally loved, but the pros love him too, and he's seen as a likely first-round pick. If he does go in the first round, he won't make it to campus.
OF Sean Gamble
MLB Pipeline rank: No. 27
Gamble is already 19 and is seen as being less polished than some of the other top high-school prospects, so he has a lower draft stock than de Brun and thus more likelihood of going to school. However, some still view Gamble as a first-round pick.
SS Cooper Flemming
MLB Pipeline rank: No. 82
Through most of the spring, Flemming has been viewed as likely to go to school, but he's risen late up draft boards with some even believing he could go in the first round. He's a 6-3, left-handed hitting shortstop, but he needs to add weight to become the best version of himself.
LHP Talon Haley
MLB Pipeline rank: No. 91
Haley is a polished left-hander with a low-90s fastball and a good curveball, but he is one of the oldest high-school prospects in the class and has an extreme injury history. He's a second- or third-rounder on talent, but age and concerns about the medicals could lead teams to shy away.

Jonny Brodzinski preps for Rangers season with summer league hat trick in Da Beauty League
If the NHL changes to a 4-on-4, no-checking format next season, Jonny Brodzsinki should be in line for a big year with the New York Rangers. Kidding aside, it was fun to see the Rangers forward record a hat trick in the Da Beauty League on Wednesday night. Da Beauty League is a popular summer hockey league in Minnesota that features plenty of professional players. Checking is forbidden, there's plenty of open ice playing 4-on-4, and defense is absolutely optional. There are other quirky rules that've helped make this an extremely popular league to play in during the offseason. Brodzinski, a Minnesota native, has averaged 3.4 points per game in the glorified shinny contests since 2022. His hat trick for Team Walser on Wednesday was his sixth in 19 'career' games in Da Beauty League. As you can see in the videos, playing defense is not a big part of these games, and it's not exactly fun being a Da Beauty League goalie. While there are plenty of big-time NHL forwards and defenseman who play in this summer league, there aren't many recognizable goalies. At the end of the day, it's a fun part of the summer workout routine for many players, like Brodzinski, and breaks up the training grind. Related: Jonny Brodzinski preparing to battle for lineup spot at Rangers training camp Things turn a bit more serious for the 32-year-old when he returns to New York for training camp in September. Coming off a career-high 12 goals in 51 games last season, Brodzinski is in the mix to center the Rangers third line, or possibly fourth line should Sam Carrick be moved up by new coach Mike Sullivan. Of course, there's also the Mika Zibanejad factor which will impact Brodzinski one way or another. If Zibanejad plays center next season, the Rangers are four deep down the middle with him, J.T. Miller, Vincent Trocheck and Carrick. That leaves Brodzinski battling for a spot on the wing in the bottom six, or as the 13th forward, a role he's very familiar with. If Zibanejad plays right wing in the top six, that opens up a spot down the middle. In that scenario, Brodzinski will compete with Juuso Parssinen primarily for a spot in the top-12 forward group. It's hard to imagine Brodzinski not having a role with the Rangers in 2025-26, his final season before he can become an unrestricted free agent. He's emerged the past two seasons as a versatile and trusted player for the Blueshirts, not to mention a leader, primarily for the younger players. Whether Sullivan views him as a lineup regular or someone who can slot in and out, up and down, the lineup remains to be seen. For now, he's just enjoying lighting the lamp back home in Da Beauty League. Fantasy Football: Should we be buying low on Patrick Mahomes?
By Matt Jones, 4for4 Going into the 2025 season, Kansas City Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes represents one of the most intriguing value propositions at the position. Despite leading Kansas City to a 15-2 regular-season record and another Super Bowl appearance, Mahomes has averaged fewer than 19 fantasy points per game in each of the last two seasons and has finished outside the top 10 fantasy football in that category among QBs. [Join or create a Yahoo Fantasy Football league for the 2025 NFL season] Currently being drafted as the QB6 with an ADP of 86.5, Mahomes offers the rare combination of proven championship pedigree and significant upside for positive regression after posting career-low efficiency numbers in 2024. The 2024 "Down" Year in Context Mahomes' 2024 campaign tells a story of a quarterback who remained highly productive despite concerning underlying metrics. He finished with 3,928 passing yards, 26 passing touchdowns, and 11 interceptions across 16 games, while adding 33 rushing yards and two rushing touchdowns. The efficiency decline was notable across multiple metrics. Mahomes posted a 67.5% completion percentage but saw his yards per attempt dip a yard below his career average. Mahomes enters his age-29 season no longer an elite fantasy option but rather a middle-of-the-pack starter. After being a perennial top-6 fantasy QB (PPG), he has finished 13th and 11th the past two seasons. What's most encouraging for regression arguments is the touchdown data. Mahomes has evolved into a quarterback who still attempts a ton of passes (ranking third in pass attempts four years in a row), but is more conservative (career-low 6.4 aDOT and 6.8 YPA in 2024) and doesn't throw as many TDs as in years past (his 26 last season was his fewest since 2019). His 4.5% touchdown rate in 2024 was significantly below his career average of 5.9%. The Case for 2025 Improvement Several factors point toward a potential bounce-back season for Mahomes. The receiving corps should be healthier and more settled than it was in 2024. With all-world speedster Xavier Worthy heading into Year 2, promising rookie Jalen Royals entering the mix, and a potential full season of Hollywood Brown, the ceiling is higher for Kansas City's passing attack in 2025. The deep-ball component, which was historically a strength for Kansas City, showed concerning trends in 2024. However, the Chiefs' offense ranked 27th in 20+ yard plays in 2024. Since Tyreek Hill departed to Miami and Travis Kelce has taken a step back, the Chiefs' offense has not connected on splash plays as often. Mahomes himself has acknowledged this, as well. The volume foundation remains strong. Mahomes has evolved into a quarterback who still attempts many passes, which provides a solid floor for fantasy football production even if his efficiency doesn't fully Value and Draft Strategy At his current ADP of 52.2 as the QB7, Mahomes is being drafted behind quarterbacks like Josh Allen (20.7 ADP), Lamar Jackson (21.9 ADP), Jayden Daniels (28.3 ADP), Jalen Hurts (33.7 ADP), and Joe Burrow (40.5 ADP). This represents a dramatic fall from his historical draft position and creates value for fantasy managers willing to bet on positive regression. After averaging better than 20 fantasy points per game in each of his first five seasons as Kansas City's starting quarterback, the foundation for a return to elite production exists. Mahomes has not been a fantasy football game-changer over the last two seasons, but a more dangerous offensive attack could put him back in the high-end QB1 range. The risk-reward profile at his current price point is compelling. While he may not return to the 25+ fantasy points per game he averaged during his peak seasons, even a return to the 20-point range would represent significant value at QB6 pricing. The Bottom Line — Mahomes has averaged fewer than 19 fantasy points per game in each of the last two seasons and has finished outside the top 10 in that category among QBs, well below his historical 20+ point average from his first five seasons as a starter. — His 26 passing touchdowns in 2024 matched his career low since becoming a starter, despite maintaining high passing volume and ranking third in pass attempts among all quarterbacks. — With all-world speedster Xavier Worthy heading into Year 2 and a potential full season of Marquise Brown, the ceiling is high for Kansas City's passing attack in 2025, plus the return of Rashee Rice from injury. — Being drafted with an 52.2 ADP behind five other quarterbacks represents a significant discount for a player who averaged 20+ fantasy points per game in five consecutive seasons before his recent decline. — As a high-upside QB1 option with one of the safest floors in the position due to his volume and championship-caliber offensive system. Detroit Tigers acquire injured reliever Paul Sewald in trade with Cleveland Guardians
Paul Sewald is injured. But the Detroit Tigers traded for him anyway. The Tigers acquired Sewald, a right-handed reliever, from the Cleveland Guardians on Thursday, July 31, in exchange for a player to be named later or cash considerations.
