J.M. Smucker to remove artificial food dyes by end-2027
June 26 (Reuters) - Jif peanut butter maker J.M. Smucker (SJM.N), opens new tab said on Thursday it would remove synthetic food colors from all consumer food products by the end of 2027.
The company said this move would impact its sugar-free fruit spreads, ice cream toppings as well as some sweet baked goods from its Hostess brand portfolio.
J.M. Smucker said majority of its products currently available to K-12 schools do not contain any artificial colors, and is working with distribution partners to stop selling products with synthetic dyes to K-12 schools by the 2026-2027 school year.
Packaged food makers, including Conagra Brands (CAG.N), opens new tab and General Mills (GIS.N), opens new tab, have been committing to eliminate the use of artificial colors from their product categories as they align themselves with the plans of Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. to remove synthetic food dyes from the U.S. food supply.
Earlier this month, Kraft Heinz (KHC.O), opens new tab also said it would stop launching new products containing artificial colors in the U.S. and plans to remove synthetic dyes from existing items by the end of 2027.

The King reigns on: LeBron James opts into $52.6m Lakers contract for 23rd NBA season
LeBron James will become the first player in NBA history to play in 23 seasons when he returns to the Los Angeles Lakers in 2025-26. James, the NBA's career leading scorer, is exercising his $52.6m player option for the upcoming season, Klutch Sports CEO Rich Paul told ESPN on Sunday. It is unclear if James, who turns 41 in December, intends to play past the upcoming season. 'LeBron wants to compete for a championship,' Paul told ESPN. 'He knows the Lakers are building for the future. He understands that, but he values a realistic chance of winning it all. We are very appreciative of the partnership that we've had for eight years with [Lakers ownership and executives] and consider the Lakers as a critical part of his career. 'We understand the difficulty in winning now while preparing for the future. We do want to evaluate what's best for LeBron at this stage in his life and career. He wants to make every season he has left count, and the Lakers understand that, are supportive and want what's best for him.' James, who has played in 1,562 regular-season games, is 50 shy of breaking Robert Parish's NBA record. James averaged 24.4 points, 7.8 rebounds and 8.2 assists in 70 games in 2024-25 to rank in the top 22 in each category. He is a 21-time All-Star, four-time league MVP and four-time NBA champion. James entered the NBA as an 18-year-old after being selected No 1 in the 2003 draft by the Cleveland Cavaliers.

How an unassuming local pizza shop run by female chef was named one of top pizzarias in the world
A Bay Area woman-owned pizzeria known for its New York-style slices has officially been ranked as one of the top pizza shops in the world. Laura Meyer, the owner of Pizzeria da Laura, in Berkley, California, was ranked 96 on this year's Best Pizza Awards list - which features chefs from around the globe. Meyer has already established herself in the culinary realm by becoming the first American and woman to win the World Pizza Championships in 2013. She began her pizza-making career in 2006 at Pyzano's Pizzeria in the Gold State's Castro Valley. She worked under acclaimed restaurateur Tony Gemignani, who co-owned Pyzano's, since she was a teenager. 'He taught me how to make pizza as well as how to throw, and is still my boss/mentor to this day,' Meyer wrote in her World Pizza Champions profile. She studied abroad in Italy during college, which deepened her love for the culinary arts. Meyer continued pursuing pizza after she graduated - earning several accolades along the way. By 2023, she finally opened her own restaurant - which sees herds of loyal customers each day. 'It's something that's very personal to me,' the pizza chef told SFGate when Pizzeria da Laura first opened. 'This is my life. This is my career. This is pretty much me in pizzeria form. To name it after myself was important because I'm very proud of it.' Of the 100 culinary experts ranked in this year's competition, only 10 women, including Meyers, made the list. This year's Best Pizza Awards rankings was determined by a voting panel of more than 500 pizza experts from 60 different countries. The third annual awards ceremony was hosted in Milan on June 25. 'The Best Pizza Awards is not just another ranking,' the organization explained on its website. 'It's the only accreditation platform that stays true to culinary standards, free from commercial agendas.' The awards were founded in 2023 to 'preserve the integrity of pizza accreditation' and mirror The Best Chef Awards, another global culinary ranking. Gemignani has been the only other chef from the Bay Area to earn a slot on the best pizza roster - ranking in 2023 and 2024, according to SFGate. But this year, he did not secure a place. Meyer is a three-time world pizza champion who specializes in New York and pan style pies, according to her Instagram bio. Pizzeria da Laura's mouthwatering menu includes four pizza styles - New York, Sicilian, Detroit and Grandma - to match any food-lovers' preference. New York style mimics the Big Apple's classic thin-crusted circle pie, while Sicilian pizza has a thick and fluffy focaccia-lie crust. Detroit deep-dish pizza is known for being the perfect combination of doughy, chewy and crisp, while Grandma pies are thin pan-baked pizzas that have East Coast roots. Meyer offers 13 set topping combinations, but customers can also pick their own variety. Aside from pizza, the restaurant serves homemade pasta, calzones and delicious appetizers such as arancini, which are rice balls.
